00:00Sure, yeah, he'd be a threat underwater, but if only you could understand him.
00:03Here's a look at the Mattel He-Man and Massey Universe cartoon collection,
00:07Merman, Ocean Warlord.
00:23It's an exciting time to be a Massey Universe fan. For longtime fans and for
00:28a new generation of kids who love action and adventure, it's time to experience the
00:31thrilling action and adventure of He-Man, Skeletor, The Secrets of Castle
00:34Grayskull, and much more. The figures in this collection stand 5.5 inches tall
00:38and have 15 movable joints, so they're highly poseable for imaginative and
00:42action-oriented fun. Merman may have had his fair share of rocky relationships,
00:47but he knows there's plenty more fish in the sea. Just before, of course, we get a
00:50closer look at the new cartoon collection, Merman, the tape measure is gonna tell us
00:54that the figure stands at 6 inches in height, or Merman's gonna be 15
00:58centimeters tall. I think we can all agree that this is the most Merman-y
01:01looking Merman we've gotten from the toy line so far. What? Here's a couple of
01:05comparisons. First of all, obviously, here's what the figure looks like with the
01:08original Origins Merman. Not at all looking like the Merman we got from the
01:12Filmation series. Predating that, though, in fact, although this figure came out a
01:15little bit later after the Origins version of Merman, here's what the figure
01:18looks like as well with the Lords of Power Merman. The original head sculpt, as
01:22you can see, looks a little closer to the cartoon, although it's still not quite
01:26right. Yeah, a couple of cartoon collection figures. So, of course, here's
01:29what he looks like with Skeletor, Beastman off to the side here as well,
01:32and Trapjaw, a figure that, in his review, his jaw was so tight that I couldn't even
01:36get it to move, but the fact that the jaw does open and close is also a nice
01:40touch that they included. And that's not the end, of course, of my Merman
01:43collection. Just off to the back here, because he's the biggest of the batch,
01:45here's what the figure looks like as well with the Revelations Merman. Comics? I
01:50got your comics right here. Mini comic to come included, though, with Merman. You
01:54get yourself one entitled Perilous Power, a comic that will come back when we look
01:57at Stratos a little bit later. Funny, though, I did actually get both these
02:00figures at Entertainment Earth, but unfortunately the site didn't list them
02:04sold separately. They were on pre-orders, so I had to get myself a case. The case
02:08basically just meant that I got myself a secondary Merman that I'll keep still
02:11sealed in card. I also got myself, as well, a sealed Triclops from the original
02:15Mass Effect, although it was the fan collection, but still part of the
02:18original origins. So I'm just gonna be putting those on my wall a little bit
02:20later. Though, going back to the comic, Perilous Power features, though, the two
02:24predominant characters from the cartoon collection. Stratos being the bottom
02:27corner, the front and center one being Merman. The Merman, by the way,
02:32does also come included with the Pearl of Power, something that's also featured
02:36here on the front of the comic. Advertised on the back, by the way, Teal
02:39and Trapdraw, two cartoon collection figures we've already had a look at.
02:42Wait, you had a look at those two figures? How did I miss that? I don't know how you
02:46missed it, but you can also go back. You can always go back. Flipping
02:49through this comic quickly, the artwork, again, is really good on all of these. The
02:53thing I like, also, about them is the fact that the minicomics have them
02:55specifically designed the way that they look in the Affilmation series. So what
02:59you liked so much about Merman in the original cartoon, you'll also like
03:03the way he looks inside the comic, and he's battling Stratos. It's funny, though,
03:07that advertised on the back is also Teal and Trapdraw, but they don't come
03:11with the exact same comic. They came included with a different one instead.
03:14I'm going to move that off to the side. Something that will be going into the
03:17recycling shortly is also the paper inserts. The paper insert is this there,
03:21once again, not only just to waste resources, but also tell you is that the
03:24head, the shoulders, the lower torso, and the booties can all be popped and swapped
03:29off with other figures as well. You can do that, too. Going back, though, to the
03:33Pearl of Power, the figure comes included with this from, I believe, City Beneath
03:37the Sea. It's, in fact, actually listed on the back of the packaging. It's a little
03:41underwhelming. I mean, obviously, if you were to go, say, to a craft store, you
03:44probably could pick up a pearl or something like a marble and do the exact
03:48same thing as what I'm doing right now. It's maybe not as heavy as a marble.
03:52Marbles tend to be more of glass. This is actually all done in plastic, but it
03:55isn't really... it's not the most interesting thing to have a look at, and
03:58unfortunately, though, it really doesn't have a proper means of store in his hand
04:02either. He has one gripping hand, which is going to be doing absolutely nothing
04:05when it comes to holding the pearl, but he does, though, have a relaxed hand. You
04:09can take yourself the Pearl of Power, and it fits into his hand, although it
04:12doesn't fit in a way that you'd be able to tip the figure upside down. I mean,
04:15tipping it any bit of way like this, you're just gonna notice that the ball
04:18is gonna roll away, probably onto the floor. Grab it quickly. My cats grab
04:21things so quick. If I just take a few moments, and I think to myself, I'm gonna
04:26grab it a little bit later. I'm gonna grab it a little bit later. By that point,
04:28the cat has already decided it wants to steal it, and it's gonna take it to a
04:31place I'm never gonna be able to find. Anyways, the Pearl of Power is one thing,
04:36at least from a cartoon standpoint. It was referenced in the episode, so I guess
04:40it's okay that they included a pearl, but I just think, like, it's sort of, again,
04:44very underwhelming. It kind of falls within that category. There was one other
04:47figure that we also had a look at it. I can't remember which one it was. It came
04:50with a pretty underwhelming accessory. Was it Beastman? Maybe it was Beastman. It
04:56was probably Beastman. Gonna move that off to the side, though. What's a little
04:59bit more interesting, though, is that the figure comes also included with his
05:01trident. This is all molded here. Not the softest of plastics, but, you know,
05:06again, a nice little silver plastic piece that he comes included with. Has the
05:09prongs on the end there, as well, so he can fork. I mean, if you are ones like to
05:14eat things with forks, I mean, obviously, you know, if you have a soup, soup might
05:18be the hardest thing to eat, unless they're also chunky soup. Remember the
05:21debate back in the 80s? The soup that eats like a meal was, do you eat it with
05:25a fork or a spoon? Who's ever gonna really eat soup with a fork? I ask you
05:29that question. Anyways, it does fit into his hand, though. It fits only in this
05:32hand here. Clips in place and stays well in place. You can also, as well, bring the
05:36trident around, and it sort of, as they indicate on the back, I think, of the
05:40packaging, you can also put it in his hand like this. I mean, that's not really
05:42gonna be doing much of anything. Let's remove the trident, put it off to the
05:46side. I tell you, I really like this figure, except for one thing. I think the
05:49color is a little bit off. In the cartoon, it comes across a little bit
05:52more like a teal color. Unfortunately, though, Mattel decide, for reasons
05:55unknown, just to mold the entire figure in sort of this pastel baby blue. They
06:00should have really added a little bit of green to this, making it a little bit
06:02more of a teal color. Other than that, though, I think the face sculpt is really
06:06good on this one, and if you are a big fan of the way that Merman looks in the
06:09series, voiced by Alan Oppenheimer, who also, funny enough, voiced Sea Spray in
06:15the Transformers animated series, Transformers original G1 series. He had
06:19apparently a typecasted thing where he always had to come in and play, do the
06:22voices of ocean master characters, ocean characters. Sea Spray turning into, again,
06:26that little, what was it, like a hover ship, a hovercraft, and, of course, Merman.
06:31Merman, I think, was my favorite of the Oppenheimer ocean-related characters,
06:35although the voices were very similar to one another. Face sculpt-wise, it's really
06:39good. I like the fact that even for the small, as small as the teeth may be, they
06:43look like they're pretty well painted. It doesn't look like the teeth, or the white
06:46at least, of the teeth have hung on or bled on to any other areas around the
06:51face. I like the colors of the way they've also colored the orange around the eyes,
06:55and his little beady eyes also stand out really well in the figure. The fins
06:59aren't the most cartoon accurate, but I can live with that. I think the biggest
07:02thing that really I take away from all this figure is more so just the fact
07:05that the colors of the blue aren't quite 100% correct. Kind of my same feelings of
07:10Beastman, so just bring in Beastman here for a second. Beastman wasn't quite the
07:14same color as he is in the cartoon series as well, so they took a little bit
07:17of color liberties, but I think the colors are still pretty good on it.
07:20Merman does have, of course, the armor. Now the way the armor attaches on to the
07:23back of the figure's body, instead of actually snapping in place, these just
07:27loop over. You can see there's a little tab piece here. The thing about it, though,
07:31is once you do this a couple of times, I'm only going to do this the two times
07:34that I've done it so far. One for this one review, and one just before this,
07:37before I actually hit the record. I'm not going to do it any time after that, just
07:40because they don't really stay well, and the more times you do it, the
07:44harder these armor pieces stay in place. The colors for his arms, now
07:48here's also one of the things, too. The armor piece is molded in yellow plastic,
07:52right? The hands clearly seem to be also molded in yellow plastic, right?
07:56Unfortunately, though, the part of the top of the glove clearly looks to
08:01be painted rather than actually molding plastic, so unfortunately the yellow here
08:04is the only place that doesn't quite jive with the color of the hand or the
08:07color of the armor. It's the only other thing that's a little off here on Merman.
08:11He has the lower trunks here, or the lower loin cloth here, molded here in
08:14orange plastic. There's no additional paint added there as well, and for his
08:17lower boots, they are at least molded here in yellow plastic, so the colors at
08:21least are going to match that of the glove and going to match, again, his armor.
08:25I don't know why I'm moving my fingers so much in front of the review. For the
08:28figure's articulation, pretty much standard. If you're already collecting
08:31Master Universe Origins figures, or for that matter, the extension, the cartoon
08:35collection, then you already know by now what's going to go along with the
08:38territory of articulation. The figure's going to have a ball joint, so like if you
08:41want to take the head off, for example, just pop that off, replace it with
08:45whatever, you know, if you want to swap. I guess if customizers make better
08:48use of the idea of swapping, mixing, matching parts, I mean, if you're just
08:51collecting the cartoon collection, or really any Master's MOTU Origins figures,
08:55you're probably never even going to take the parts and the limbs off anyways, but
08:58anyways, the head is going to be on a ball joint, so it rotates all the way
09:00around. It does look down, yes. It does look up, sure, and it also can move back
09:05and forth. Because he does have the fins on the sides, it's a little harder for him
09:08to get that head pivot back and forth, but it still manages to do that. Arms
09:12come out easily, even though he does have the little fins there on the tops
09:15for his shoulders. These are all softer plastic, by the way. You can move the arms
09:18forward, you can move them back, and because of already mentioning the fins,
09:22you already know that you can't really rotate the arm all the way around. It just
09:25isn't going to cut it. The figure doesn't have a bicep swivel, sadly, but what he does
09:29have instead is a swivel in his forearm. There's an angle pivot there, an angle
09:34rocker. What am I talking about here? An elbow hinge joint there, where you can bend
09:38the arm. You can rotate the hand also, as well, and hinge that back and forth.
09:41He has a waist swivel. It's nice and tight, which is, luckily, I'm glad to see
09:45that. There's a couple of, I think, was it the skeletor? I think the
09:47skeletor is a little loose on the waist. Legs split out. They're on ball joints.
09:52You can take the legs and move forward, sure, moving back, why not? There's a
09:55little swivel there at the top of the thigh. Single hinge, again, only on the
09:57knee. Ah, this is the one thing that's loose on the figure of mine. It's this
10:01knee here. Reasons unknown. I don't know, but I can tell you, like, this knee is a
10:05little tighter. Does anybody really care? Nobody really cares. This part, by the way,
10:09is also a separate piece. So, because of that, it also grants itself a little bit
10:12of additional posability. The ankle does move back and forth. You do also can
10:16rock it back and forth this way, as well, and all the figures seem to have, so far,
10:20peggles in the undersides of their feet. Merman was the figure I was really the
10:23most interested in getting. Merman, I've always really liked the design of him,
10:26although he is, again, really hard to understand. It basically just sounded like
10:29Alan was always talking the role with marbles in his mouth. Speaking, though, of
10:32marbles, I'm segueing self over to the idea that the figure comes included, again, with
10:37the Pearl of Power. Even if you liked City Beneath the Sea, I just don't think
10:41that it's a necessary accessory. I mean, again, I guess if being a thrown-in
10:46episode-referenced accessory isn't a bad thing, but I just think, like, the Pearl of
10:49Power, I don't know, I think they probably could have picked something
10:51better. At least the figure comes included with this trident, which is
10:55one thing I'm gonna be displaying with the figure. For the likelihood of this
10:57falling onto the floor, for the likelihood of me wasting the time not to
11:00pick it up right away, and for my cat probably chasing this away, where it's
11:05just gonna be disappearing. I don't even know where. Probably gonna be under a
11:07couch. That's probably where all the stuff that my little kitty seems to be
11:10stealing. That's probably where the Pearl of Power is gonna end up. Bringing back
11:13in a couple of other figures also, as well. All the cartoon collection, at least.
11:16Skeletor, Beastman on either side, and, of course, can't forget the Triclops. Loving
11:20this line. Loving this line so far. The thing about it, though, is one thing. I'm
11:24just gonna move the figures right over here, at least the cartoon collection,
11:27bringing back in the original Merman from the Origins line. I mean, one thing I
11:31did mention in the earlier reviews that I'll mention again here in this review,
11:33is that they've obviously given them brand-new bodies, except for the female
11:37figures. For all reasons, again, unknown, Tila was using, just again, the Massive
11:41Universe Origins body, which, again, I really think a missed... I mean, just a
11:45really missed error on Mattel's part. Not just to design brand-new bodies for the
11:49female figures, as well, because obviously the scale is gonna be way off. But if
11:53you're looking to scale these, you'll notice right away that the cartoon
11:56collection are gonna be notably taller than the Origins figures. If that's not a
11:59bad thing for you, if that's not a problem for you, at least, it's a
12:02great line so far. And again, Massive Universe for the cartoon collection, the
12:06one I was the most interested in, was getting Merman. A little late on this, but
12:10when finally the listing went up online over at Entertainment Earth, which again,
12:14I unfortunately had to get myself an entire case of them. No harm, no foul, just
12:17basically means I have another one of these sitting sealed inside a card. I
12:20just ended up having to pick it up that way, and I think I ended up ultimately
12:23paying probably like $75 to get the case, and that's the case they included. The
12:27Merman came included also with the cartoon collection Stratos, and then
12:30another version of another Merman, I should say, and the fan fan collection. I
12:35think that's what they're calling the cartoon fan collection. Fan collection,
12:38Massive Universe, Origins, Triclops. Which again, is a figure I ultimately would
12:41have gone back and tried to get one unsealed. So again, no harm, no foul. Nice
12:45looking Merman though. The only thing I would say though, is that the colors
12:48aren't quite jiving when it comes to the tops of his gloves. I mean, obviously they
12:51clearly have painted that piece where all the things in around it that are
12:55yellow are all molded in yellow plastic. And again, the one other thing though, is
12:59while maybe this Merman isn't quite the same colors as the cartoon either, he's a
13:02little closer in colors that I wish that this Merman was a little bit
13:06more closer to teal, not the baby blue we got instead. Stocking anything new in
13:11the way of Massive Universe here in Canada is just a myth. It's an urban
13:14legend. It doesn't exist. I mean, I don't know if the re-buyers are just looking
13:17at the shelves and thinking, well hey, we keep going back and dusting off the
13:20Revelation faker. If nobody clearly is buying this, then what hope do we have at
13:24all to restock anything new? Because collectors aren't gonna be getting them.
13:27So there's always of course the option of going on to eBay, but then each of the
13:31individual cartoon collection figures that I've been looking at for a while
13:34now, Merman has been sitting at around $40 to $50. I didn't want to pay that at
13:38all. In fact, I just recently went to Florida. I went to take my daughter to
13:43Disney World and I thought, hey, while we're there, a little bit of time to kill,
13:46why don't I check out a local Target? See what a Super Walmart is all about.
13:50Apparently that's a thing in the US as well. And I was hoping, if anything, even
13:54though I didn't have a lot of luggage space, most of this luggage space was
13:57already being occupied by souvenirs I picked up at Disney, but I was hoping in
14:01the off chance I could walk down the aisle and be blinded by all the light
14:04shining off the glorious Matthew Universe Origins Collection packaging,
14:08but not the case. Not the case. I went down the aisle and the pegs were
14:12just as empty as they were here in Canada. So it doesn't seem to be just a
14:15problem here in Canada. Matthew Universe distribution seems to suck in a lot of
14:19places. Now obviously that's not gonna be the case with everybody, because I know
14:23there's a lot of reviewers out there that have already had the chance to have
14:25a look at the Cartoon Collection Merman and to wait a little longer. Finally, this
14:28guy did get stocked at Entertainment Earth. Probably not the most ideal way
14:31that he was stocked, because you couldn't get the individual figures, but they did
14:34have a case set available, which basically usually means that they just
14:38throw in an extra figure. You know, one figure kind of gets a quantity of two
14:42and then you get the other figures that go along with it. So getting a case of
14:45four basically meant two Cartoon Collection Mermans, not a bad thing at
14:48all. Cartoon Collection Stratos and a fan collection, or is it fan favorites? I
14:53think it's fan favorites. Matthew Universe Origins Triclops. The Triclops
14:57and the Merman are just gonna already be on my shelf as we
15:00speak. I'm gonna keep those sealed. I like the look of Merman so much, I don't mind
15:03having another one sealed. So if you guys are interested and haven't had any luck,
15:08any luck whatsoever finding these in the wild, you can again click the link down
15:12below. They'll take you over to Entertainment Earth. That same link, by
15:14the way, will also save you 10% on anything that's currently in stock and
15:17they also, of course, offer free shipping over $75. Going though back to Merman,
15:22while the colors aren't 100% cartoon accurate, do wish that they could have
15:25been teal instead of the blue that they used. The blue, for what it is, does look
15:29nice. The figure's colored very brightly. Merman should be a very brightly colored
15:33figure. He isn't as good maybe as the Super 7 Filmation series Merman, but you
15:38know, again, talking about crazy stupid prices, I'm not paying like $100
15:42for a Filmation version of him from Super 7. Good-looking figure, but I think
15:46I'm rather just happy to be paying, well, I paid for what I got of this guy at a
15:50much better price. I'm happy with at least collecting the stuff that we're
15:53getting from Mattel. Mattel, at least by filling the void in, means that as a
15:57new-time collector of these MOTU figures, that you don't have to go the route of
16:01eBay. You don't have to go the route of paying the ludicrous prices to
16:05now go back and get the old back stock of stuff that we got from Super 7.
16:09Instead, we're getting pretty good-looking cartoon characters. Merman's pretty high
16:12on my list. I think still him, Beastman, I'd really like to say Tila, but like the
16:18scaling on Tila is still way off. I'm gonna probably talk about that in one of
16:21the upcoming reviews when we look at Evil Lin, because Evil Lin, I think, is
16:24still using the same body. But I like the look of Merman. He probably is, I would
16:28say, my top three, top three favorite of the cartoon collection figures that
16:31we've gotten so far. He's a nice-looking figure. I just probably don't have any
16:34plans of displaying him at all with the marble. Just because, again, like the Pearl
16:38of Power, while being, yes, a episode-specific accessory, just isn't
16:41gonna work when it comes to displaying this guy, because the moment that thing
16:44falls out of his hand, it's gone. I'm gonna turn around and the cat's gonna go
16:47and it's gonna be gone with that pearl. I'm never gonna find it again. So I'm
16:51probably just gonna put it back in the bag with all the other things that I
16:54haven't displayed yet with the figures, and I'm just gonna display him with the
16:57Trident. Nice-looking figure overall, though. I'm glad that I finally got the
17:00chance to get Merman. It's that one figure I've really wanted from
17:03the cartoon collection, and I think, short of the colors, he delivered exactly what
17:07I would have wanted. What do you guys think of Merman? Let me know down below
17:09in the comment section. Also, let me know down below whereabouts you guys are
17:13located, and how plentiful is Masters of the Universe? Are you a dry, barren
17:18wasteland as well? Empty pegs galore? Or do you have them as far as the eye can
17:22see? You can rub it in. It's okay. Let me know down below in the comment section.
17:26If you guys, in the meantime, did enjoy this video, I want to throw it a like. If you
17:29guys are loving the content you guys are seeing and want to be on board for that
17:31review of Stratos, it's gonna be right around the corner, by the way. Making
17:34sure that you're hitting that subscribe button down below is crucial. I mean, it's
17:37obviously a very important thing, but turning on the bell notification, I know
17:40it may not always seem like it's a big important thing, like it's not muy
17:43importante. It is importante. You want to make sure that you're hitting that as
17:47well, so you're gonna get the reminders from YouTube every single time the
17:50person behind the camera is posting something new. As always, guys, thanks for
17:54watching. See you guys next time.
