00:00 I don't know about that. Maybe if Keith and I both two-on-one the kangaroo, we might be able to take him.
00:05 I didn't learn any skills while I was locked up.
00:07 We caught up with Sam Hunt about his "Locked Up" EP and tour and the newer country artist that even
00:20 he's nervous to be in front of.
00:22 The four songs are, I put them together on an EP, but they really are a part of a project I've been
00:27 putting out for about two years now, one song at a time.
00:30 How is the "Locked Up" EP different from your past work? What makes this creative process special?
00:35 They reflect this season of my life that I've been in. Getting older and writing from different
00:40 perspectives now than I did early on. When you're finished with a project, you're always looking
00:43 forward to that next one, so I'm already on to the next one in my mind, but I'm happy that these songs are out.
00:47 You can't be there yet, you just put the EP out.
00:49 And with "Outskirts" being a top five hit on country radio, how has Sam been loving it on tour?
00:57 It's been great. It's been fun to watch. We've got our diehard fans who know about the songs
01:03 when they come out and they'll sing the songs back at the live show and then you hear the response
01:07 grow when the song at radio has success. So "Outskirts" had sort of a slow burn early on,
01:12 but here in the last eight weeks it has taken off. Like you said, now I think it's sitting at
01:17 number three at country radio and I've noticed that the shows, people are obviously hearing it more.
01:23 But yeah, so it's good to have, it's always good to have a hit song in your set, so it's nice to add another one.
01:29 But from the tour crowd with his fans to the audience at the CMT's with his peers,
01:34 how has that changed things for the country star?
01:37 Being in the business and then, you know, with the pandemic and I haven't toured as much or been to
01:42 as many award shows in the last few years, so there are a lot of new artists that I know from
01:46 the internet. I'm familiar with a lot of their music and I'm a fan of a lot of them, but I don't
01:51 have as close a relationship with all those folks.
01:53 Who's a new face you're excited to see? Like who's Sam Hunt excited to see?
01:56 It's like Megan Moroney. I met her a couple nights ago at the Ryman. We both played a show with Bobby
02:01 Bones. I've been, since she put out some of her original videos of her like in the stairwell
02:07 with a lot of reverb playing some of her songs on acoustic guitar. I just thought she had a
02:11 great voice and her songwriting was great. So I've been looking forward to meeting her and
02:16 met her briefly at the Ryman, but I'm a fan of her music.
02:19 Another question about your peers. I got to ask you this. So Keith Urban was talking to Bunny
02:23 backstage and she asked him if you could get in a fight with a kangaroo and invite somebody with
02:27 you, who would it be? And he goes, well, Sam's been locked up, so I'm going to say him.
02:30 Now, how close are you and Keith and would you fare up good in a fight with a kangaroo?
02:36 I don't know about that. Maybe if Keith and I both two on one the kangaroo, we might be able
02:42 to take him. There's that video that went around a few years ago of that guy boxing with that
02:46 kangaroo that they're pretty intimidating. But yeah, I didn't learn any skills while I was locked
02:50 up, but I did growing up in the South. You know how to handle yourself.
02:54 Well, thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us. I really appreciate it.
02:59 Yeah, absolutely. Good to talk to you.
