A burns victim has thanked emergency service workers for helping save his life.

Derick, who was 81-years-old at the time, was at his daughter’s home near Sherwood Forest, on 7 May 2022, when he was involved in a bonfire incident and needed urgent help.

Thanks to the quick response of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and officers from our road policing unit and response teams, Derick was taken to hospital to be treated for burns to his face and hands.

Now two years later Derick and his family wanted to say a special thank you to everyone who attended and helped them when they needed it most.

00:00We've been invited here by Derek and his family following a bonfire incident that
00:04he was involved with two years ago. The police along with our emergency
00:08services colleagues in EMAS, Helimed and fire service attended and they've
00:13invited us back after a long two years of recovery to thank our services.
00:17We was mobilised, two appliances, mobilised to Man on Fire in Garden. The gentleman
00:24was over at his daughter's, he'd been clearing the garden and with the rubbish
00:30he decided to have a bonfire. Unfortunately the bonfire got out of
00:34control and he got involved with this clothing court fire and that's
00:40where the initial call came in. Fire and service were already on scene doing a lot of
00:44first aid, cooling him down. We also had some extensives or burns to his hands
00:48and body and torso. So there's very little I could do other than give him some
00:53pain relief and help settle him down and wait for the ambulance to arrive to
00:57take him to QMC. As I turned, hands were alight, face were alight, a lad was driving past and
01:04stopped. Fortunately we found out later that we'd trained first aid there. So I spent 20 minutes
01:11sitting in the garden with cold water poured all over me, which I've since been told
01:17saved an awful lot. All the services were, in my opinion, exemplary. I can't fault any of the
01:27services. In fact, I often think I wish I'd have been that good. They were brilliant.
01:35It's lovely to be thanked. It's lovely that he's gone to this effort to thank us and I feel
01:40really appreciated. Yeah, it's really nice. As our colleagues from other services have
01:44said, you don't often get updates on how people are doing and you definitely don't
01:49get invited to events to thank you. So it's lovely.
