Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan made a dramatic statement at the United Nations General Assembly by tearing up the UN Charter in protest just before the assembly passed a resolution supporting full membership for Palestine. The resolution, which received overwhelming support with 143 votes in favour, asked the Security Council to grant full membership to Palestine, currently holding observer status at the UN. Twenty-five countries abstained from the vote, while nine, including the United States and Israel, voted against it. Erdan criticised the resolution as a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and accused it of circumventing the US veto in the Security Council. He described his actions as a symbolic reflection of the assembly's disregard for the principles outlined in the UN Charter.

00:00 Free Palestine and vote yes for the resolution and I thank you so much.
00:06 You can see exactly what you are inflicting upon the UN Charter with this destructive vote.
00:14 This is...
00:17 You are shredding the UN Charter.
00:26 In a bold act of defiance, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan made a powerful statement at the
00:33 United Nations General Assembly by tearing apart the UN Charter just before the passage
00:39 of a resolution advocating for the full membership of Palestine. The resolution,
00:44 which urged the Security Council to grant Palestine full membership despite its current
00:49 observer status, received overwhelming support with 143 votes in favor, including India's,
00:55 while nine nations, including the US and Israel, opposed it. Ambassador Erdan denounced the
01:02 resolution as a blatant violation of the UN Charter and criticized its undermining of the
01:07 US veto in the Security Council. He symbolically held up the torn remains of the Charter,
01:13 emphasizing his condemnation and urging the General Assembly to reconsider its actions.
01:19 Today, another travesty is being committed here by the General Assembly, an unforgivable act.
01:27 The destruction of the United Nations Charter, the UN Charter, the sacred document which serves
01:38 as the foundation of everything we are supposed to do here, is being trampled upon. It is being
01:45 thrown out the window. You are spitting on the very values that were formulated to bind this
01:53 organization. With today's destructive resolution, you are circumventing the Security Council,
02:02 ignoring its decision, and violating the norms this organization has abided by. You know that
02:10 the Palestinians are the exact opposite of peace-loving. You know this. Since they rejected
02:18 the UN partition plan in 1947, they rejected it. They have only tried to destroy Israel time and
02:27 again. They are terror-loving, not peace-loving. They are anything but peace-loving. Not a single
02:35 Palestinian leader, not even one, has condemned the October 7th massacre. He calls the Hamas his
02:43 brothers. As long as so many of you are Jew-hating, you don't really care that the Palestinians are
02:50 not peace-loving. He also alleged that the resolution opens up the UN for modern-day Nazis
02:57 referring to Hamas. At the end of my speech, I tore the UN Charter to pieces to illustrate
03:03 what the Assembly is doing in its support for the entry of Palestinian terrorism into the UN.
03:08 The United Nations General Assembly recently passed a resolution proposed by the UAE,
03:21 which grants new privileges to the Palestinian Authority as a non-member observer state.
03:26 The resolution calls for the UN Security Council to reconsider the matter favorably
03:30 regarding Palestinian membership. Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz,
03:35 criticized the resolution, labeling it as an absurd decision that underscores the UN's
03:41 structural bias. Katz argued that the resolution rewards the actions of Hamas,
03:46 particularly following their actions on October 7, which he referred to as the largest massacre
03:52 of Jews since the Holocaust. He further stated that the decision to upgrade the status of
03:57 Palestinians at the UN serves as a reward for Hamas terrorists, suggesting that it conveys
04:03 the message that violence is rewarded. Following the passage of the resolution,
04:08 Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour announced the Palestinian Authority's intention to seek full
04:13 membership from the Security Council. However, the US has issued a warning signaling its likely
04:18 veto of such a request, similar to its veto of an earlier Palestinian membership bid in April.
04:24 In the recent past, the US exercised its veto power to block a UN Security Council resolution
04:30 proposing statehood for Palestine. The veto resulted in a 12-1 outcome, with the US casting
04:36 the sole vote and two abstentions. Consequently, the UNSC did not adopt the draft resolution,
04:42 which aimed to recommend to the General Assembly to conduct a vote involving the broader UN
04:47 membership for Palestine's full UN member-state status. According to UN protocols, for a draft
04:53 resolution to pass, the UNSC requires at least nine members in favour, with none of its permanent
04:58 members – China, France, Russia, the UK and the US – utilising their veto power.
