00:00 In a move that strengthened Washington diplomatically as it defends its ally, the US vetoed a UN
00:07 Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict
00:10 between Israel and Palestinian militant organization Hamas in Gaza.
00:15 The United Arab Emirates had proposed a draft resolution, which was supported by 13 members,
00:19 while Britain abstained.
00:21 The vote followed a rare move on Wednesday by UN Secretary-General António Guterres
00:24 to formally alert the 15-member Council to the global threat posed by the two-month-long
00:28 war.
00:30 As the proposal failed, Mohammad Abu Shahab, US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, questioned
00:34 the Council, "What is the message we are sending to Palestinians if we cannot unite behind
00:38 a call to halt the relentless bombardment of Gaza?
00:41 A ceasefire is opposed by both Israel and the United States because they think it will
00:44 only help Hamas.
00:46 Instead, Washington is in favor of military truces that will shield civilians and permit
00:50 the release of hostages that Hamas has kidnapped during the lethal attack on Israel on October
00:55 7."
00:56 The draft resolution, according to the US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood,
00:59 is an "unbalanced document" that is "divorced from reality" and it will not move forward
01:04 a needle on the ground in any concrete way.
01:07 Although the United States strongly supports a durable peace process in which both Israel
01:11 and Palestinians can live in peace and security, the US does not support the resolution's
01:15 call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war.
01:20 These were the words of Robert Wood in United Nations Security Council.
01:25 To secure the release of additional hostages and pressure Israel to protect civilians in
01:30 Gaza as it retaliates against Hamas, the United States preferred its diplomacy over actions
01:34 taken by the Security Council.
01:37 But there is a gap between Israel's intention to protect civilians and what has actually
01:40 occurred on the ground, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also admitted on
01:44 Thursday.
01:46 According to Gaza's health ministry, over 17,480 people have perished.
01:51 Israel has begun a ground offensive, imposed a siege and bombardment of Gaza from the air.
01:55 Approximately 2.3 million people living in the Palestinian enclave have been forced to
01:59 flee their homes from most of the parts.
02:02 Citizens are not effectively protected, Qatar's has also earlier informed the council on Wednesday.
