00:00 Oh God, this is a good one.
00:02 Such a good line too.
00:04 Wow!
00:06 I think I just blanked that movie out of my brain.
00:07 Am I gonna get any of these right?
00:09 'Cause I have this whole window of time
00:10 where I just cut everything.
00:12 This is either madness or brilliance.
00:19 Oh man.
00:20 It's from Pirates of the Caribbean.
00:23 That was the first movie.
00:24 Search for the Black Pearl?
00:28 No, I'm only joking.
00:29 Curse of the Black Pearl.
00:30 This is either madness or brilliance.
00:34 Johnny was just in his flow, you know?
00:37 He was very much enjoying every moment
00:40 of chewing that scenery.
00:41 He built out a character that I think
00:43 he really enjoyed playing.
00:46 It's fun to see actors really love what they're doing
00:49 and sort of laughing at themselves a little.
00:51 He was kind of chuckling the whole time
00:53 at these moments that he was creating for the character.
00:56 Do you love me, brother?
00:59 Will you protect me from any enemy?
01:01 Oof.
01:03 Is this from Kingdom of Heaven?
01:05 Oh, maybe it's Lord of the Rings.
01:08 Kingdom of Heaven.
01:10 Oh my God, Troy.
01:14 Wow!
01:17 - Do you love me, brother?
01:19 Would you protect me against any enemy?
01:22 - I think I just blanked that movie out of my brain,
01:24 by the way.
01:25 So many people love that movie,
01:27 but for me, playing that character was just like,
01:30 am I allowed to say all these things?
01:32 I didn't want to do the movie.
01:33 I didn't want to play this character.
01:34 The movie was great.
01:35 It was Brad and it was Eric and it was Peter O'Toole.
01:38 I'm like, how am I going to play this character?
01:39 It was completely against everything I felt in my being.
01:42 At one point, it says Paris crawls along the floor,
01:46 having been beaten by somebody
01:48 and just holds his brother's leg.
01:49 And I was like, I'm not going to be able to do this.
01:52 And one of my agents at the time said,
01:53 but that's the moment that'll make it.
01:56 And I completely fell for that line of an agent.
02:00 I think that's why I blanked that line from my mind.
02:04 I've got a very special ring for fingers here,
02:08 made from pure frozen jelly.
02:10 Peppa Pig.
02:14 Oh, Peppa Pig.
02:15 I've got a very special ring for fingers here,
02:18 made from pure frozen jelly.
02:21 Peppa Pig has been in my life since I can remember,
02:24 well, at least 13 years.
02:25 And I've always loved Peppa Pig.
02:27 There's just something so innocent, pure,
02:29 and joyful about the whole world that's created
02:32 this family of pigs.
02:34 So when I got a call to do a voice for Peppa Pig,
02:37 it was the easiest thing,
02:38 especially since my daughter is now enjoying Peppa Pig
02:41 at three and a half, so it's kind of cool.
02:44 One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.
02:49 I'm talking about Lemba Spread in "The Lord of the Rings,"
02:52 in "The Fellowship of the Ring."
02:55 [dramatic music]
02:57 One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.
03:00 The hobbits are complaining about not having,
03:03 you know, 50 meals a day or something.
03:07 And I'm like, "Well, Lemba Spread."
03:10 Legolas was this remarkable character to play.
03:13 Obviously, I felt huge pressure because the character I knew
03:16 was very beloved within the books,
03:18 one of my favorite characters in the books when I read it.
03:20 So I had this sense of like, you know,
03:23 wanting a deep desire to land the character correctly,
03:26 at least for the fans of the books.
03:27 I had auditioned to play Faramir.
03:29 I think they were probably just sifting through London,
03:32 all the cities around the world
03:33 to try and find these characters.
03:34 And I guess I probably fit the, you know,
03:38 the blurb of Faramir at the time.
03:40 But then I got a callback
03:41 to put myself on tape initially for Legolas.
03:44 And then I got another callback to meet Peter and Fran,
03:47 who had come to London.
03:49 And then I waited and I was at drama school.
03:51 And yeah, the rest is history.
03:53 How can you be in hell when you're in my heart?
03:57 This is a good one.
03:58 Such a good line too.
04:00 Is that "Kingdom of Heaven"?
04:02 [bell dings]
04:04 Yes.
04:05 How can you be in hell when you're in my heart?
04:10 Ridley, I always feel like,
04:12 uses the cameras like giant paintbrushes.
04:14 And he's looking at this canvas that's in front of him.
04:17 He inspires people to kind of move a whole set
04:20 just as the sun's going down in 15 minutes.
04:23 I never saw a crew move so fast, like 150 people or so,
04:27 to catch like a sunset shot over the desert.
04:30 I just remember feeling very inspired to be
04:32 like the number one on his call sheet
04:34 and work with him and see him
04:36 just inspiring people around him as he was doing.
04:39 And there wasn't a single shot
04:42 that didn't feel like a massive moment.
04:44 I mean, that was, I was probably 27.
04:47 That was like my first kind of lead in a movie,
04:49 which is insane 'cause it was a giant Ridley Scott project.
04:53 That was a remarkable time.
04:54 They run as if the very whips of their masters
04:56 were behind them.
04:57 That's a Legolas line again.
04:59 Must be the two towers 'cause we were,
05:02 spent a lot of the time in two towers running.
05:04 They run as if the very whips of their masters
05:06 were behind them.
05:08 I mean, I literally did all of the running.
05:09 I think Viggo and I, as much as possible,
05:12 insisted on doing all of our running.
05:13 And I really took my cues from him,
05:15 although I would have wanted to do all of it anyway,
05:17 because there was such a specific physicality to the elves
05:20 and to specifically to Legolas' movement.
05:22 It was really important to me that I didn't,
05:24 that I got that right.
05:25 In the second movie, there's a sequence
05:27 where I throw down a shield and I slide down it
05:29 like it's a surfboard of some sort.
05:31 I did as much of that stuff as I possibly could, actually.
05:35 There were a few moments that were computer generated.
05:38 Good effort, son.
05:39 Here's a cap and a shirt for you.
05:41 That's Gran Turismo.
05:43 Good effort, son.
05:44 Here's a cap and a shirt for you.
05:46 Had a great time on that movie.
05:47 We slightly got let down by the,
05:49 well, we were unable to do as much publicity
05:52 as I think we'd all hoped.
05:53 But I really thought, you know,
05:55 Neil did an amazing job directing the movie
05:57 and Archie was fantastic.
05:58 And there was a whole bunch of great young talent in there
06:01 and it was a really cool experience, actually.
06:04 I'm not really a video game kind of a guy.
06:06 Never really have been.
06:07 I maybe played Tetris years ago when I was a kid,
06:11 had a Game Boy.
06:11 Oh, there was years and years ago in England,
06:15 there was, this is really aging me,
06:16 but I kind of like that at this time in my life.
06:19 Renegade was like a little fighting game
06:21 on a Sega console.
06:23 That's old.
06:24 People are gonna be like, "Wait, what?"
06:27 What about side by side with a friend?
06:29 Oh, is it Return of the King?
06:30 Yes, Return of the King.
06:32 - I thought I'd die fighting side by side with an elf.
06:36 - What about side by side with a friend?
06:38 - I've actually seen that line tattooed countless times
06:41 on fans around the world.
06:43 It's gone, "Wow!"
06:44 And in fact, I think I even signed something
06:49 'cause I saw the tattoo and it was Legolas and Gimli.
06:51 And that line, "What about side by side with a friend?"
06:53 And then he said, "Could you just send me your signature
06:55 "so I can tattoo it underneath?"
06:56 'Cause he had Gimlis.
06:57 He had John Rhys-Davis on one side and me on the other.
07:00 So any crew member can be challenged
07:03 is from Pirates of the Caribbean.
07:05 I just don't know which movie though.
07:07 I think it's, "So any crew member can be challenged."
07:12 At World's End?
07:13 [buzzer buzzes]
07:14 No, Dead Man's Chest.
07:16 Okay, there you go.
07:17 Well, again, another trilogy of movies shot
07:21 not exactly in sequence or order, so forgive me.
07:24 - So any crew member can be challenged.
07:27 - By anyone.
07:29 - I mean, Pirates wasn't supposed to be another two.
07:31 Obviously, it went on to be the huge success that it was.
07:33 You know, it's a funny thing to be a part
07:35 of a couple of trilogies that have had such a huge impact
07:39 on fans around the world.
07:41 It's obviously a massive blessing.
07:44 And it's also like overshadowed anything
07:46 and everything else I've ever tried to do,
07:48 which I'm also good with.
07:51 At the same time, I'm like, you know,
07:55 as I build out other characters for me to kind of flex
07:59 or stretch in and grow through.
08:02 You know, my kids and my kids' kids,
08:04 it feels like you're a part of.
08:05 And I saw "The Lord of the Rings" recently,
08:08 or when I say recently, probably a couple of years ago.
08:11 It held up well.
08:12 I was like, you know, they really put a lot into that.
08:14 And I think that's true of Pirates too, you know?
08:16 And that was, you know, in itself a gift, so.
08:18 Looking for someone?
08:21 Oh my God, is that from, is that my first ever appearance?
08:25 That's wild.
08:27 Wild.
08:28 It's from "Wild," about Oscar Wilde with Stephen Fry
08:32 and Jude Law.
08:33 [audience laughing]
08:35 Looking for someone?
08:36 I was actually, literally, I think I was 16.
08:42 I'd moved to London.
08:43 I had an agent who had saw me on stage
08:47 at a small theater in North London
08:49 called the Tricycle Theater, had signed me.
08:51 I think as a kid, I was never more present
08:54 than I was when I was on stage.
08:56 And I was also never more terrified
08:58 than the moment just before I went on stage.
09:01 I had terrible stage fright,
09:02 which I think was the perfect combination of things
09:06 or feelings to enable me to kind of hold onto
09:11 and think about pushing through and growing through
09:14 and evolving through, whatever.
09:15 I was single-minded about wanting to do that.
09:19 I was always like, "I'm doing this."
09:21 So young, so full of, like, the excitement,
09:28 hopes, and dreams of, like, what my life could be
09:31 with zero idea of what was about to happen.
09:34 It's quite wild, that.
09:36 [upbeat music]
09:39 [upbeat music]
09:41 (upbeat music)
09:44 (upbeat music)
