00:00 Don't eat before watching this upcoming IFC film's flick, or you might just make a mess.
00:06 Is "In a Violent Nature" really as sickening as people say?
00:10 Unlike big budget blockbusters that often depend on famous faces or explosive and expensive
00:14 set pieces to draw audiences into the theater, the horror genre has been thriving for decades
00:19 with no-name actors, shoestring budgets, and still pulling in huge profits thanks to a
00:23 quality idea that audiences want to see.
00:26 If the characters in the film are more than likely not going to make it to the end credits,
00:30 there's no need to shell out the dough for a household name when they're just going to
00:33 be killed off.
00:34 Fortunately, horror films also frequently inspire unprovoked reactions from audiences
00:39 that work better than any marketing campaign ever could.
00:42 A24 struck gold when audience members were reportedly fainting during preview screenings
00:47 of "Talk to Me," which certainly helped skyrocket the film's popularity and contributed to it
00:52 becoming the production company's highest-grossing horror film ever, even surpassing Ari Aster's
00:57 "Hereditary."
00:58 "Run, run, run, run!"
01:03 IFC films and Shudder have now been given a similar gift, with their arthouse slasher
01:07 gore fest "In a Violent Nature" reportedly making audiences gasp and even vomit.
01:13 Audio that was secretly recorded during the Chicago Critics Film Fest screening allegedly
01:16 captures folks being extremely freaked out, and reports of someone being so disgusted by
01:21 the film that they threw up in the middle of the movie.
01:24 "In a Violent Nature" is a slasher film that follows the slasher villain instead of the
01:28 teenage victims trying to survive the slaughter.
01:30 If you've ever wondered what Michael Myers is up to during the scenes when babysitters
01:34 are smoking weed or walking home from school, "In a Violent Nature" focuses on that story.
01:39 And for the most part, the slasher named Johnny is just trekking through the woods.
01:44 Sometimes "In a Violent Nature" feels like watching a video game walking simulator, but
01:48 this intentional pacing is meant to lull the audience into a false sense of comfort, because
01:52 when Johnny's path finally does cross with a group of friends in the woods, he executes
01:56 kills that would make Jason Voorhees proud.
01:59 The walking scenes are ambient and calm, which gives the kills a space to be as over the
02:03 top as possible.
02:05 One moment in particular, undoubtedly the scene that reportedly made someone barf in
02:08 their seat, is one of the most creative kills in recent memory, outdoing even the gorehound
02:13 favorite "Terrifier 2."
02:15 Considering how extreme the violence is compared to how disarming the lead up is, it is a very
02:20 jarring whiplash for folks who aren't prepared to watch a body destroyed in ways never thought
02:24 possible.
02:25 Is "In a Violent Nature" a non-stop bloodbath of gross-out torture porn?
02:29 No, but it is extremely effective in its execution, and will certainly catch some viewers off
02:34 guard with just how intense the kills get, especially those shot in broad daylight.
02:39 As of this video, the Blumhouse movie about a cursed swimming pool, "Night Swim," is
02:43 still the highest grossing horror movie of the year domestically, but horror hasn't
02:47 been performing as well at the box office as usual.
02:50 There have certainly been modest hits like "Late Night with the Devil," so leaning
02:53 into this newfound angle of a movie so scary it makes people vomit could certainly help
02:58 get butts in seats during the theatrical run.
03:00 Fortunately, "In a Violent Nature" is a genuinely interesting movie in its approach
03:04 to crafting a slasher film, and the downright brutal kills more than compensate for the
03:08 downtime between them.
03:10 Horror is subjective, and viewers shouldn't expect to lose their cookies just because
03:14 someone else reportedly did.
03:16 Instead, horror fans should have fun with a new inventive slasher with gnarly kills
03:21 and a marketing campaign that is going to freak out all the normies.
03:25 But if you're an easily queasy viewer, maybe skip the icy before watching the movie, just
03:29 to be safe.
03:30 "In a Violent Nature" arrives in theaters on May 31, 2024.
