One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and 90% of those cancers are melanoma, the deadliest type. But the good news is it is treatable if detected early. In fact, the five-year survival rate is 99%. On a mission to spread that message, longtime leaders in sun protection, skincare brand La Roche-Posay in partnership with TDS, the dermatologist specialists of New York City were offering free head to toe skin cancer screenings to the public. The brand says they've helped facilitate more than half a million skin exams by board certified dermatologists over the last ten years. Events like these, they say, help provide access to someone who may not visit a dermatologist regularly or have access to one. The team says more than 90% of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure and the sun's harmful rays can penetrate even through glass, so that means no matter where you are or what you're doing, if you're exposed to sunlight you need to protect your skin and remember - every day is a sunscreen day. 00:00 One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
00:04 But the good news is it is treatable if detected early.
00:08 Better yet, completely preventable if you protect yourself.
00:12 On a mission to spread that message, long-time leaders in sun protection,
00:16 skin care brand La Roche-Posay, in partnership with TDS,
00:20 the dermatologist specialists of New York City, were offering free head-to-toe
00:24 skin cancer screenings to the public.
00:26 For kickoff Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we are providing the public with free skin checks
00:30 conducted by board-certified dermatologists, while also handing out free La Roche-Posay
00:36 and Thilio sunscreen products, all with the goal to educate the public about sun safety
00:41 and skin cancer prevention.
00:43 The brand says they've helped facilitate more than half a million skin exams
00:47 by board-certified dermatologists over the last 10 years.
00:51 We've found several skin cancers already. This is melanoma May,
00:54 and we want everyone to be really aware of skin cancer, any moles that have been changing,
00:58 any non-healing wounds. Those are things we want to check out a little bit more closely.
01:02 It's about prevention, and also when melanoma is caught early,
01:06 the five-year survival rate is 99%.
01:09 So really, it's extremely important to get your moles checked annually.
01:13 Events like these, they say, help provide access to someone who may not visit
01:17 a dermatologist regularly or have access to one.
01:20 The dermatology specialist is really proud to partner with La Roche.
01:23 They've got sunscreen for all ages, and it's SPF 30 or higher.
01:26 And that's the recommendation of the American Academy of Dermatology
01:29 to make sure you put something on in the morning.
01:31 If you're doing a lot of splashing in the water, reapplication is necessary,
01:34 but generally that should cover you throughout the entire day.
01:36 Wear long, loose-fitting clothing. Avoiding sun in between 11 and 2.
01:40 Wide-brim hats is great.
01:41 The team says more than 90% of skin cancers, including melanoma, the most deadly type,
01:46 are caused by sun exposure, and the sun's harmful rays can penetrate even through glass.
01:52 So that means no matter where you are or what you're doing,
01:55 if you're exposed to sunlight, you need to protect your skin.
01:58 And remember, every day is a sunscreen day.
02:01 So for the American Cancer Society today, every skin check that is completed,
02:05 we're donating $5 towards them. So that's happening throughout the summer.
