00:00 Thousands of disgruntled Hungarians took to the streets of the city of Debrecen, a ruling
00:05 party stronghold, to join a rally Sunday and weeks before the European Parliament elections
00:11 and the local polls in early June.
00:14 A former government insider and first serious challenger to populists and Hungarian strongman
00:20 Orbán, Peter Magyar spearheaded and organized the said rally.
00:25 Debrecen has been known as, or ruling party, stranglehold since the late 1990s, in which
00:32 60 percent of its leaders since have been candidates from the administration.
00:38 But whether Peter Magyar took to the stage for his speech, the 10,000-strong crowd cheered
00:43 and waved Hungarian flags in the air in opposition to a number of Viktor Orbán's policies.
00:50 Among the policies Magyar attacked was the extremely low level of child support allowances
00:55 or funding the government has afforded Hungarians across the board.
00:59 Critics of Orbán, to include international watchdogs, alleged Orbán has channeled European
01:05 Union funds to businessmen with strings to the ruling party so he could entrench himself
01:11 in power.
