Referees in Creamline-Petro Gazz game to be re-assigned, says PVL exec
Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo clarifies that first referee Bobby Celso will be re-assigned and not suspended amid talk on social media over a controversial call he made during the Creamline-Petro Gazz game last Thursday, May 2, 2024 that favored the Cool Smashers. Malonzo emphasized that it was the referee’s judgement and the referees did not do anything wrong to merit a suspension. Malonzo said, however, that Celso and the other referees involved in that game will not be officiating for the duration of the tournament.

00:00Right after the match also, I spoke with my referee supervisor.
00:05One thing I discussed.
00:07I said, if this happened in the 10-ball, it's not an issue.
00:13But it happened in the crucial part of the game, which is the 25-ball.
00:17I said, you know, it's not that I doubt the calls of the referee.
00:22Like, their first test was the overreach.
00:26He was right. His call was right.
00:30But that is my interpretation.
00:33There are a lot of millions of eyes looking at his interpretation.
00:38But in FIVB, it is a judgment ball.
00:41So his judgment was, it was an overreach.
00:44Simply because the person was setting, Negrito was setting the ball.
00:50Van Sickle moved the ball, but he didn't overreach.
00:58Or, let's put it the other way around.
01:01If Van Sickle caught the ball and Negrito moved the sequence,
01:07Negrito would be called for an illegal backline attack.
01:13So, that's it. It's a judgment.
01:18Because it's a judgment, and a crucial part of the match,
01:21I told our referee supervisor, Jeff,
01:26Utilize the challenge.
01:30Because you can challenge yourself.
01:32It's not, we're not lowering the referee's decision.
01:40It's just that, for the person to understand that his decision is right,
01:45but if his decision is wrong after the referee,
01:48it doesn't mean that he's a weak referee.
01:51The ball is fast.
01:53If you try to stand at the referee's point, the ball is fast.
01:58So, every assistance that you can get, you really need it.
02:05And video challenge, the challenge system,
02:08is one equipment that can help reduce the down.
