00:00Wolverine surely isn't the kind of guy to break a promise, but can the same be said
00:04about Hugh Jackman?
00:05The superhero movie renaissance has had a few absolutely perfect casting choices, and
00:09Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is one of them.
00:11He might be taller than his comic book counterpart, but Jackman's performance as the brawny, growly,
00:16metal-clawed mutant was crucial to the success of the original X-Men movie trilogy.
00:21It's no wonder that his version of Wolverine has had three solo spin-off movies, including
00:25the critically acclaimed final chapter, Logan.
00:28It's arguably one of the best superhero movies ever made.
00:30I hear that a lot."
00:31It's equally unsurprising that Jackman, despite saying farewell to the character, couldn't
00:35help but jump on board for the upcoming threequel, Deadpool and Wolverine.
00:39In an interview with Empire, he said,
00:41"...for five years, I was really honest when I said, I'm never playing that part again,
00:45I promise you."
00:46In a new interview with the same magazine, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed that
00:50he once urged Jackman to stick to this conviction.
00:53He recounted his advice to the actor as such.
00:55I said,
00:56"...let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh.
00:57Don't come back.
00:58You had the greatest ending in history with Logan.
01:01That's not something we should undo.
01:02It's somewhat ironic advice, given the source."
01:04Marvel made cinematic history with 2019's Avengers Endgame, an unprecedented movie event
01:10that was the climax of a decade of buildup across 21 previous movies.
01:14"...Is that everyone?
01:15Like you wanted more?"
01:17It was a monster success, and it could even arguably be called the greatest ending in
01:21history, at least when it comes to superhero films.
01:24Since then, though, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has stumbled a bit with box office
01:27bombs like Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania, and the Marvels.
01:31Can Deadpool and Wolverine help get the MCU back on track, or will it be remembered as
01:35more of an epilogue?
01:36The jury is still out on that one.
01:38Regardless, the good news for Kevin Feige and other fans of Logan is that none of the
01:42events in Deadpool and Wolverine will impact director James Mangold's 2017 film, for the
01:47simple reason that the events in that film haven't taken place yet.
01:51Deadpool and Wolverine is something of an island in the turbulent seas of the X-Men
01:54movie timeline, since it's set far enough in the future to be more or less a standalone
01:58story.
01:59Now that 20th Century Fox's X-Men films have been absorbed into the MCU, Logan can easily
02:04be considered as simply one possible future in the vast Marvel multiverse.
02:08Admittedly, it no longer functions as Hugh Jackman's big final goodbye to the character,
02:12but ultimately, Jackman was prepared to accept that.
02:15"...I could probably think of a few reasons to stick around."
02:19He explained to Empire that the decision was made over the course of a long drive,
02:23saying,
02:24"...I was about an hour into the drive and that question came into my head, what do I
02:27want to do?
02:28And as soon as I asked the question, I wanted to do Deadpool and Wolverine.
02:31I just knew it.
02:32I drove for another hour, couldn't stop thinking about it.
02:35And I got out of the car, called Ryan Reynolds and said, Ryan, if you'll have me, I'm in."
02:38Jackman failed to specify whether or not these thoughts appeared inside yellow or white boxes,
02:43but we like to think that they did.
