00:02:43 There was nothing in their backgrounds that would suggest, you know, something like that would happen.
00:02:54 I was at a loss.
00:02:59 [ Drilling Sounds ]
00:03:04 They were pretty darn good kids.
00:03:09 These boys weren't criminals, they didn't have records.
00:03:11 And, you know, for something like this to happen to the boys and to the school, of course it was a big loss at the time.
00:03:19 [ Music ]
00:03:28 We were in shock.
00:03:31 I mean, we did not expect that from our son, ever.
00:03:37 It's like we woke up in a nightmare.
00:03:41 [ Music ]
00:04:00 Everything in our family was geared towards our kids to be successful.
00:04:06 It was just a moment in which we lost them.

00:04:22 Sorry.

00:05:03 Spencer, thank you for waiting.
00:05:06 We've been very impressed with your portfolio and the exceptional commendations of your teachers.
00:05:13 But now we're hoping to find out a little bit more about you personally.
00:05:19 I'm like my family background stuff.
00:05:21 Whatever you think is most relevant.
00:05:24 Tell us a little bit about who you are.
00:05:27 Well, my name is Spencer Reinhardt.
00:05:31 I'm from Lexington, Kentucky, and I'm 30 years old for another, less than a month, I guess.
00:05:37 My father, he is an engineer.
00:05:42 My mom is a stay-at-home mom, I guess.
00:05:45 Let me stop you there.
00:05:48 What we'd really like to know is about you.
00:05:52 Like hobbies and stuff?
00:05:58 What do you hope to express with your work?
00:06:01 I mean, who are you as an artist?
00:06:06 [ Silence ]
00:06:12 [ Music ]
00:06:26 Mr. Reinhardt, the honorable man, if you will.
00:06:29 He strives for the generosity of the generous.
00:06:33 The humility of the humble.
00:06:37 The honorable man is--

00:07:38 Growing up, I had a desire for some kind of life-altering experience.
00:07:45 [ Music ]
00:07:48 I started to read about other artists.
00:07:51 They were always affected by some kind of tragedy in their life and had to suffer a great deal.
00:07:57 Van Gogh ended up killing himself.
00:08:00 Monet went blind.
00:08:03 I felt like they understood something more about life that I wasn't getting to experience.
00:08:08 [ Music ]
00:08:11 Art has to be about more than just, "My life is great and I'm really good at drawing."

00:08:37 About fucking time.
00:08:39 What do you mean, "It's about time"?
00:08:41 I left you like a zillion messages.
00:08:43 You haven't left me a message in weeks, Warren.
00:08:45 Anyway, do you want to do something?
00:08:47 I think I'm going to go to bed.
00:08:49 Seriously, man? Fuck fraternities.
00:08:51 The reason to be a part of that is so one day you can walk in the door of an office you'd never want to go in,
00:08:56 to see a guy you'd never want to meet, all in the hopes that he might give you a job you'd never want to fucking do.
00:09:01 Something I've often thought about is how my life would have been different if I hadn't met Warren.
00:09:06 So this is the dinosaur T-Rex trying to turn off a ceiling fan.
00:09:16 Warren was definitely somebody that my mom did not want me to be friends with.
00:09:23 We were not thrilled with the relationship with Warren, but we accepted it because
00:09:29 he was his friend.
00:09:32 You need to have a little bit of spice in the broth.
00:09:40 And Warren probably was that spice.
00:09:45 People have said that I was the ringleader, but that's just not true.
00:09:51 There was no ringleader.
00:09:53 Yes!
00:09:56 Half of the work here, half of this shit got wasted. Literally thrown in the fucking trash.
00:10:00 Hand me the flashlight.
00:10:02 Warren, what are we doing here?
00:10:08 Did you know that 40% of restaurant food in America gets thrown in the trash?
00:10:11 Just thrown away. We are the fattest fucking nation on the planet, and we still throw nearly half of our food away.
00:10:17 My kids are starving in Africa, dude. It's fucking tragic.
00:10:21 What the fuck are we going to do with this?
00:10:25 We are going to bring it from landfill. Do you need avocado?
00:10:27 No, I'm fine.
00:10:29 Run! Run, run, run, run, run!
00:10:31 Don't drop the fucking meat! God damn it!
00:10:34 Next time you're going to get a fucking bullet, Warren!
00:10:37 Fuck him up in her ass!
00:10:40 Drive! Drive! Drive!
00:10:47 Drive! Drive!
00:10:49 Drive! Drive!
00:10:50 Look at these fucks.
00:11:13 We should just rev up and put them out of their misery.
00:11:17 I don't even know what we're doing back here.
00:11:19 You said you meet any new cool people over there?
00:11:25 No. A bunch of jocks. You?
00:11:29 No.
00:11:32 Uh-uh.
00:11:34 It's not what I thought it would be.
00:11:43 Ever wonder he ended up being born you, here, and not someone else?
00:11:50 Or you ever feel like you're waiting for something to happen,
00:11:58 but you don't know what it is?
00:12:03 Or is it...
00:12:06 that thing that could, uh...
00:12:12 make your life special?
00:12:14 Yeah. Like what?
00:12:20 Exactly. Like what?
00:12:39 If there is a book you cannot find either on the shelves or on the computer,
00:12:43 please make a point of asking a member of the library staff.
00:12:47 Through these doors lived this special collection,
00:12:51 and in future you will require an appointment to go through these doors,
00:12:55 and you will need to be accompanied by a member of the library staff at all times.
00:13:01 Someone take the door, thank you.
00:13:09 Many of the books in this library have been here since the 19th century,
00:13:13 and we are very pleased to be home to some of the rarest editions in the United States.
00:13:19 John James Audubon is responsible for this masterpiece here.
00:13:26 First edition, "Birds of America."
00:13:29 He lived here in Kentucky.
00:13:32 Had some misfortune in business.
00:13:36 Went to prison for debt.
00:13:38 When he left prison, he headed for the wilderness
00:13:41 with a gun, some paint, and a deep desire to paint every bird in America.
00:13:47 And when he came back into civilization,
00:13:51 he was acclaimed as one of the foremost figures in American art.
00:13:55 So how much is it worth?
00:13:57 Well, we don't discuss the worth of our books,
00:14:01 but I can assure you that Mr. Audubon would never have imagined
00:14:05 that his book would be the most valuable in existence.
00:14:08 Now most of you are familiar with this book,
00:14:12 arguably among the most important ever written,
00:14:15 "Darwin's On the Origin of Species."
00:14:17 Please look at line number 10 and tell me what you see.
00:14:21 Species is spelled wrong.
00:14:24 That's correct. Species is spelled wrong.
00:14:28 I'm sorry, that's all.
00:14:32 [dog whining]
00:14:34 [whispering]
00:14:37 Will you be joining us, sir?
00:14:59 I'm pretty sure he told me about it at Rich's party.
00:15:02 I remember it being cold.
00:15:04 A book? In what world can a book be worth $12 million?
00:15:10 It's not really a book. It's more like a collection of paintings.
00:15:15 I think I told him about it in the car.
00:15:17 Maybe November. It was cold.
00:15:20 I still don't understand how a book can be worth $12 million.
00:15:27 I think if Picasso had a bunch of his paintings in a book...
00:15:31 You say it's in the library. It's like what?
00:15:35 Sitting on a shelf?
00:15:37 No, it's in the special collections room.
00:15:41 Which is what? Like a vault?
00:15:43 More like a secure room with glass cases and stuff.
00:15:47 With guards and the doors and shit?
00:15:49 No, but obviously you can't just walk in there.
00:15:52 They pull in here.
00:15:54 Because there's security everywhere?
00:15:56 Not that I saw.
00:15:57 Whoa. What the...
00:16:01 Because you have to make an appointment.
00:16:07 So this is how you remember it?
00:16:25 Not exactly.
00:16:26 But if this is how Spencer remembers it, then let's go with it.
00:16:31 It's $12 million.
00:16:37 Could we get it?
00:16:41 You know, like, what would it take?
00:16:44 It would take extraordinary effort to get it.
00:16:47 Not ordinary effort.
00:16:50 [car engine]
00:16:52 What?
00:17:04 I think you know what.
00:17:06 There's been so much who brought it up, who kind of started it.
00:17:14 I feel that he was first.
00:17:17 And that I took the bait.
00:17:19 It would be true to say that once Warren latches on to an idea,
00:17:23 that he's not easily going to let it go.
00:17:46 [keyboard clacking]
00:17:48 Look, all I'm saying is that nothing will happen unless you make something happen.
00:18:05 We're supposed to be hunter-gatherers, man.
00:18:08 And our whole lives are just unwrapping shit.
00:18:11 Packaging, packaging, packaging.
00:18:14 The illusion of choice.
00:18:16 It's bullshit, man.
00:18:18 Everyone in here thinks that they're going to win the lottery, but no one buys a ticket.
00:18:22 Well, yeah, a prison would be a nice change of scenery.
00:18:27 Well, what about ending up on a fucking boat in the Caribbean?
00:18:30 At the end of Shawshank Redemption.
00:18:32 Oh, my God.
00:18:34 What about that?
00:18:36 They've been in prison for 20 years.
00:18:38 And sorry to burst your bubble, but it doesn't work like that in real life, Warren.
00:18:43 Bad guys.
00:18:44 They don't get to ride off into the sunset with the money and the gold and...
00:18:47 Wait a second. How would we be the bad guys?
00:18:50 Uh, we'd be the robbers.
00:18:53 Aren't you even curious, in your little, little brain, to find out what would actually happen?
00:19:04 Aren't you curious?
00:19:08 Find out what?
00:19:11 Find out what would really happen in real life.
00:19:13 I've lost count.
00:19:23 Can you go, man, please? I work here.
00:19:25 I work here.
00:19:27 Listen to me.
00:19:29 I gotta do this.
00:19:31 We're going to need the blueprints.
00:19:34 We're going to need to know the exits and entry points.
00:19:36 We're going to need to know the staff entrances and the fastest way out of the building at any given point.
00:19:40 At any given point in time.
00:19:41 What do you say?
00:19:46 You don't need blueprints.
00:19:50 You can just draw it.
00:19:52 These guys are cruel.
00:19:58 They can't afford to weasel out on a deal. If they did, they'd be washed up.
00:20:01 Okay? Any other questions?
00:20:04 Well, let's take a look at this, then.
00:20:08 This is a rough drawing of the track, as I remember it.
00:20:12 There aren't exactly books that instruct you on how to steal... art.
00:20:18 I want you to go over this thing with me, inch by inch.
00:20:21 Add or subtract the slightest change, even if it's something as small as the placing of a hot dog stand.
00:20:25 5-10, tall, redhead, librarian, one. Leaves for the evening.
00:20:30 Thanks for the evening.
00:20:31 5-11, short, male, administrative assistant, returns.
00:20:42 Hold the door, please.
00:20:58 Many of the books in this library have been used since the 19th century.
00:21:02 Neither of us were really serious about the idea.
00:21:24 I took it very seriously from the start.
00:21:26 [knocking]
00:21:28 Warren, there's no secret knock.
00:21:35 Yeah, well, there should be.
00:21:37 Hi.
00:21:39 You lost your fake ID already, didn't you?
00:21:46 Actually, I came to talk to you about something.
00:21:49 Oh, yeah?
00:21:51 Yeah.
00:21:52 What's up?
00:21:54 [sighs]
00:21:55 What if I had something to get rid of?
00:22:00 What thing are you talking about?
00:22:03 Something rare.
00:22:06 So you're looking for a fence?
00:22:13 I'm looking for a guy who's gonna buy something rare.
00:22:17 Great.
00:22:18 I don't want to hear anything about this.
00:22:22 But I know a guy you might be able to talk to, but I only met him once.
00:22:26 And I don't know him to vouch for, so...
00:22:28 Do you understand?
00:22:30 Absolutely, I get it.
00:22:31 Okay.
00:22:34 [sighs]
00:22:42 He's out of New York.
00:22:47 Does not like phone calls.
00:22:49 I'll go get in touch with him.
00:22:51 Okay.
00:22:52 What is this?
00:22:56 That's a fence.
00:22:58 What's a fence?
00:22:59 It's a fence.
00:23:01 A fence is somebody who buys stolen shit.
00:23:04 Supposed to email that guy, ask him for a meeting, and sign off with the name Terry.
00:23:09 And he said to never email from the same account twice.
00:23:13 How fucking cool is that?
00:23:16 Good work.
00:23:18 Thank you.
00:23:19 Thank you.
00:23:20 Best. Terry.
00:23:26 Happy?
00:23:28 I would change.
00:23:29 Oops.
00:23:30 I just don't get, like, what a good faith payment is.
00:23:37 I mean, we give him 500 bucks for a meeting.
00:23:41 It's a show we're serious, and not time wasters.
00:23:43 I would have thought driving across the country for 12 hours was a good demonstration of that.
00:23:48 It's just how it's done, man.
00:23:49 Oh, you know this from all your previous heists?
00:23:52 Would you relax?
00:23:53 What would you do with the money?
00:24:00 Aren't artists supposed to starve?
00:24:03 You're listening to your favorite only station.
00:24:06 Back to back hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
00:24:10 [music]
00:24:33 We're out of Kentucky. Nobody knows that we're gone.
00:24:36 There was a sense of possibility.
00:24:40 Real things were actually starting to happen, and they were...
00:24:42 It was changing, changing our lives right then.
00:24:46 [music]
00:25:10 [music stops]
00:25:11 [cars driving by]
00:25:31 I was fearful at the time that if the guy didn't show up,
00:25:35 that this fantasy would be over and we'd be going back to Kentucky,
00:25:38 and things would kind of resume their normal course.
00:25:43 [music]
00:26:08 And then suddenly Warren's talking to a guy with a ponytail and a blue scarf.
00:26:12 Or was it a purple scarf?
00:26:14 [music]
00:26:26 The guy was in his 50s, he had white hair, well-dressed.
00:26:32 [music]
00:26:40 He hands me the piece of paper, and that was that.
00:26:42 He didn't even count the money.
00:26:44 [music]
00:26:50 So, what'd he say? What'd he say?
00:26:53 It wasn't the buyer. He gave us a contact. The fence.
00:26:59 So, that guy was in the fence. I thought you said he was the fence.
00:27:04 I guess not.
00:27:06 We just... we spent $500 on an email address.
00:27:10 All you have to do is contact this guy.
00:27:12 He said he speaks English.
00:27:14 What?
00:27:16 He said...
00:27:18 Let's go get some food. Come on. I'm freezing.
00:27:20 Why wouldn't he speak English, Warren? Warren?
00:27:23 Sir, thank you for your email.
00:27:34 I'm afraid we only do business in person, but...
00:27:37 We'll welcome you and your items in the Netherlands.
00:27:40 At your earliest convenience.
00:27:42 We have to go.
00:27:52 To Holland?
00:27:53 To the Netherlands.
00:27:54 Can you stop?
00:27:55 No, I'm not stopping until it's burned.
00:27:56 Warren.
00:27:57 It's evidence.
00:27:58 Ah! Motherfuck.
00:27:59 Thank you. Sorry.
00:28:03 So, you want to go all the way over there to meet some actual criminals
00:28:08 you know nothing about, to talk about something we don't even have.
00:28:13 Yes.
00:28:14 What's your suggestion?
00:28:17 Maybe it's time to face reality.
00:28:20 Maybe it's something we're not able to do.
00:28:23 So, we're just going to sit here and do nothing?
00:28:30 That is so disappointing.
00:28:33 I can't even tell you.
00:28:36 How about you, Spencer? You keeping your game up?
00:28:41 Not so much. I mean, I'm trying to take the whole art thing seriously.
00:28:46 Yeah?
00:28:48 Yeah.
00:28:49 Well, I guess somebody has to, huh?
00:28:50 But, you know, you want to keep that blood pumping, son.
00:28:53 Speaking of which, I ran into Burt Morris last week,
00:28:57 and he said you missed a couple of practice games.
00:28:59 Yeah.
00:29:00 Now, Warren, you're there on a scholarship,
00:29:02 and that's what it means. You are there to play.
00:29:05 I had it the same way.
00:29:07 Jesus Christ.
00:29:09 You okay?
00:29:11 Remember, quitters never win, and winners never quit.
00:29:16 Spencer.
00:29:18 Hey, it's something to live by.
00:29:19 So, how is your mom, Spencer?
00:29:21 She's doing good.
00:29:23 Good. You tell her I said hi for me.
00:29:25 I will.
00:29:26 I need to speak with you, please.
00:29:28 What, now, Susan? Now?
00:29:30 Excuse me, guys.
00:29:33 What I want to do is just have dinner with the boys.
00:29:36 [indistinct chatter]
00:29:38 I'm divorcing your father.
00:30:01 I'm sorry.
00:30:06 And then I think I looked over at Spencer, and...
00:30:09 I mean, who knows if this is how it really went,
00:30:12 but he said... I remember him being like, "Well, I should go, man."
00:30:15 Is he fucking crying?
00:30:28 Is he fucking crying?
00:30:29 Are you fucking crying?!
00:30:37 I'm gonna go, man.
00:30:39 Yeah, let's go.
00:30:45 [indistinct chatter]
00:30:47 [coughing]
00:31:12 [coughing]
00:31:13 You should chew your food, man. Seriously.
00:31:20 [groaning]
00:31:22 I've carried on with the plan.
00:31:26 What are you talking about?
00:31:28 Holland.
00:31:30 Amsterdam and Ding Dong.
00:31:32 Come on, Warren. You know I can't go.
00:31:35 Even if I wanted to.
00:31:38 [sighs]
00:31:39 Come on.
00:31:44 Fuck.
00:31:46 Look, maybe I can, uh, find some money and...
