00:00 Global warming is also happening. The United Nations is calling for global boiling in the heat we are experiencing right now.
00:08 We are joined by Jefferson Chua, campaigner of the environmental organization Greenpeace. Good morning.
00:16 Good morning.
00:18 If there is a global boiling, is this an indication that it is irreversible, the effect of climate change?
00:26 The effect of climate change is not yet reversible. Although, we can say that our window of opportunity is small.
00:36 If that is the language, that global boiling is already happening,
00:40 aside from the literal feeling that it is hot now,
00:45 climate action around the world with other countries, especially the developing countries, needs to be more urgent.
00:53 So, is there a solution?
00:55 Yes. It is not going to be lost in our horizon.
00:59 Aside from being more ambitious in the Paris Agreement,
01:04 we need to find a way to meet the huge fossil fuel companies that the CHR is showing,
01:13 that they have an attribution to their continuous use of fossil fuels in the heat of the time.
01:23 But despite the press conferences of the rich countries, especially the climate change action,
01:30 it seems like it's already a global boiling.
01:34 Yes. What we are saying is that the window of opportunity is until 2030.
01:42 Our target is not to exceed the average of 1.5 for 2030.
01:51 The truth is that it is already hard.
01:54 That's why we are calling for the other countries to be more ambitious,
01:59 to find a way to transition away from fossil fuels,
02:08 and to pay for the historical emissions that we are feeling now.
02:16 Jeff, you mentioned the responsibility of the rich countries.
02:21 Can't we ask them for damages, us who are in the third world country?
02:26 Yes. In fact, last year during the COP,
02:30 we found a way to give space for the discussion of loss and damage.
02:38 This is a mechanism where the rich countries need to pay developing countries
02:51 because of the climate damages they are feeling and are suffering.
02:56 Now, the most important element here is not only the rich countries who need to pay,
03:05 but also the big companies where they are in these big countries.
03:11 That is the most important because we saw that there is a clear link,
03:16 a clear attribution of the continued business operations of these big companies
03:22 where we are feeling now.
03:24 What is the scenario of this war that we are experiencing in the world?
03:29 Is there a next level, the global boiling? Is there a next one?
03:33 We are saying, many are saying that this is the beginning of the limits of our climate.
03:44 In fact, there is a forecast this week that it will reach 57 degrees in other parts of the country.
03:52 This is just a foretaste of what we will feel.
03:57 There are still concerns, there are systems that will fail because of the heat and the rise in temperature,
04:12 especially on the biodiversity side.
04:14 We saw that there was a coral bleaching that happened due to the rise in the temperature of the time
04:21 and of course, there are many biological systems that will be threatened due to the global warming.
04:27 How can we help our countrymen to reduce the effect of climate change?
04:34 One of the biggest things that we need to do now is to really unite and demand,
04:41 especially from the politicians and our policy makers,
04:45 to enact policies that are not only aligned with the Paris Agreement
04:51 but also allows for space for climate accountability to happen.
04:56 Our policy makers have already made a lot of efforts but we really need to strengthen our voices
05:04 so that these big companies can thrive.
05:07 We have seen a lot of efforts from the youth sector, from different sectors of society
05:15 that are uniting our calls for climate accountability.
05:19 That's why we need to strengthen and reflect the urgency of what we call global boiling.
05:25 Thank you very much Jefferson Chua of Greenpeace Philippines. Take care.
05:30 Thank you.
05:31 Thank you.
