Tyla takes us on an incredible journey through her most iconic career moments in this episode of The Breakdown. Here, our cover star reminisces on the grind creating her first music video and the call she received from South Africa's President to congratulate her on her first Grammy win. She also gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her stunning (and freezing ) performance at New Year's Rockin' Eve and her adorable 11-year-old Justin Bieber cover that she tried to delete multiple times (and we're all thankful she couldn't!)

00:00 Hey it's Tyler and today I'm bringing the breakdown with Cosmopolitan.
00:04 I don't like watching myself when I'm with other people but when I'm alone,
00:07 yes I have to watch so I can critique and be better the next time. Let's do this.
00:24 So there I was 11 years old at my old house back in South Africa and I was a huge Belieber. Like
00:31 oh my gosh guys I used to have the biggest crush on Justin Bieber. Firstly the night before I know
00:36 I prepared myself I said I'm gonna wake up early, I'm gonna post my YouTube video, I'm gonna go viral
00:42 like I planned the whole thing out and I went to my father's computer and I recorded it and uploaded
00:48 it. I remember checking the views every like 10 minutes and I thought I was gonna wake up to a
00:54 million views, I didn't. But yeah it's the cutest video ever. I tried many times to delete it and I
01:00 can't get in my login. It's still on my main YouTube page so I think it's cute. And the Grammy goes to
01:08 Water. Tyler. I still can't believe it happened like oh my gosh. It didn't register. It took a
01:21 while like they said was it Tyler and I was like oh okay. That's me and I won a Grammy.
01:29 My parents came to America for the first time. My mother was crying in the audience.
01:35 She couldn't stop crying. She's still crying till this day I'm telling you right now.
01:38 The president of South Africa gave me a whole video call congratulating me and that also meant
01:45 a lot to me because obviously the president of South Africa what the heck nobody just gets calls
01:51 from the president. That was also like a fire moment for this year. My first ever music video.
02:03 Guys we were fighting for our lives in that era. Oh my gosh we were grinding. We were trying
02:10 everything. Favors like independence. Literally me, my manager, my best friend. People don't know
02:17 what we went through during that phase but I'm so happy because now we're here and I appreciate that
02:23 even more being here now. And it was the video that got me noticed by my label that I'm signed
02:30 to now and it basically started my journey being Tyler. Making her US tv debut performing her
02:38 global hit Water. Give it up for Tyler. So that was me performing for Jimmy Fallon. I always
02:51 dreamed of that moment. Even my friend and my choreographer knows not long before we got the
02:57 offer I was in my hotel room and I was literally pretending to be Jimmy Fallon. I was like
03:02 it's Tyler Water. Like I was acting the whole thing out and then we got the offer to perform
03:10 for Jimmy Fallon which was crazy. That's probably one of my favorite performances I've done
03:15 so far. I was so nervous like performing for literally US tv and we had to record it and it
03:24 went live that night. Like it was a lot but I mean I won't go under pressure. So your hand goes up
03:32 then you sweat, sweat, then you jump, jump, yes and then you
03:37 love love love love love Jennifer Hudson. I remember being small and I kept singing that
03:46 song Spotlight. Oh I felt like a woman. So it was cool meeting her and teaching her the dance.
03:54 Always gonna remember that my mother loved it. She was dying when I called her backstage.
04:00 So that was my New Year's Eve performance in New York. What the heck. That offer was also like a
04:15 crazy offer to get and I couldn't have turned it down. Like I mean I was supposed to be with my
04:22 family the whole Christmas time which I would have loved but I got to spend Christmas with
04:25 them and I had to tell them I gotta go and sort out this thing and yeah I'm so happy I did.
04:32 We also had not much rehearsal but it came out exactly how we wanted. It was freezing. People
04:38 were even asking me how did you do that? Like it was so cold but I mean when you're passionate
04:44 about something you will literally go through a lot and I got to meet and chill with my fellow
04:49 cover girl Sabrina. She's super cute. Love her.
04:53 So that is my music video for Truth or Dare. If you haven't watched it, go watch it. That video
05:05 I really wanted to do something different because I mean I dance in a lot of my videos which I love
05:10 doing but for this one I wanted it to kind of be completely different to the way the sound
05:16 of the song sounds you know. A little fun detour. So we worked with the director Nabil.
05:22 Love him. Love, love, love, love him and we just let him know that we wanted a very like
05:29 organic cool new difference and he came up with a whole story. Like when I got the treatment for
05:35 it like I expected pictures because that's how I'm used to seeing treatments. It was literally a
05:39 story and we read it. Didn't fully understand it but we trusted him and it came out better than I
05:47 thought it would. Thumbs up Nabil. So you guys be prepared for more fire music videos because
05:53 they are coming. Thank you so much for watching. Make sure to check out my Cosmo cover story.
