00:00I'm just about to leave Eyemouth and I just thought I'd come and see this sculpture here
00:05which is called Widows and Bans. It was created by an artist called Jill Watson and it commemorates
00:14the men who died in a horrific storm in October in 1881 and more than 100 women
00:24became widows that day and more than 300 children were fatherless as well. I was just at the local
00:31museum and apparently each of these carved individuals, sculpted individuals sorry,
00:40represent somebody that was affected during the storm but also there were some children
00:47that weren't on the Church of Scotland register because maybe they were born out of wedlock
00:53and at the time you know they just they weren't they wouldn't have been recorded so it's actually
00:58probably quite a few more than what you can see here on the statue. Somebody at the local museum
01:03just said a lot of people who come here want to get a postcard with this pretty impressive
01:11sculpture on it and they haven't had them until just until recently they managed to get permission
01:17from Jill Watson the artist to do that so when you're next in Eyemouth you could
01:22potentially get a postcard with Widows and Bans statue on it.
