00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're looking at the worst things to ever happen to Princess
00:17Zelda.
00:18Look out for spoilers ahead.
00:27Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:31the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:36Sacrificed and Possessed.
00:38The Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess.
00:46Zelda isn't in Twilight Princess that much, but even still, she has a rough go of things.
00:52Held captive in her castle for half the game, one of the only things she's able to do to
00:56help is save Midna.
00:58With the companion on death's door, Zelda sacrifices herself, giving her life force
01:02to Midna before vanishing.
01:11That would be bad enough to earn some pity given she's already lost control over everything
01:15else in her life, but then she's revived and possessed to fight Link as Ganondorf's
01:20puppet during the first phase of the final fight.
01:22That's just adding insult to injury.
01:31Pressure of the Princess.
01:33The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild.
01:43Most versions of the princess fit into their regal role with little effort, though the
01:47same can't be said of her Breath of the Wild incarnation.
01:50Through flashbacks, we learn that, prior to Calamity Ganon's return, Zelda struggled
01:55with awakening her sealing power, genetically passed down through some members of the royal
01:59family.
02:07We see her feelings of inadequacy as she fails to live up to her potential, feelings only
02:12worsened by her strict father in the absence of her late mother.
02:17It's hard not to feel bad for her, or even relate to her as the scenes play out and head
02:23towards the negative conclusion we all knew was coming.
02:32Has Her Body Stolen?
02:34The Legend of Zelda, Spirit Tracks.
02:44Over the years, Nintendo has found clever ways of placing Zelda in harm's way without
02:48having her get kidnapped.
02:50In Spirit Tracks, this version of the princess rules over New Hyrule, founded after the great
02:55flood that left the original kingdom at the bottom of the sea.
02:58Things seem to be going well until Chancellor Cole, one of her trusted advisors, stabs her
03:03in the back.
03:12He removes her spirit from her body, which he plans to use as a vessel for his lord and
03:17savior, the demon king Malidus.
03:19Having your body stolen from you has got to suck, but the sting of betrayal from one of
03:24your allies makes it a bit harsher.
03:33Kidnapped and Sent to the Dark World.
03:35The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past.
03:44Of course, Zelda has still been kidnapped in several entries.
03:48Usually when this happens, she's just stuck in a castle somewhere until Link can come
03:52to the rescue, but in A Link to the Past, she doesn't even get that luxury.
03:57Zelda is kidnapped and subsequently freed from her prison cell at the beginning of the
04:01game.
04:05However, she's later kidnapped again and sent to the Dark World, a twisted version
04:15of the Sacred Realm with little in terms of comfort.
04:18Yeah, we'd say that's a step down from where she's normally held.
04:22Plus, her father is killed during her initial capture, and even though he's revived in
04:26the end, we imagine that was pretty traumatic for the princess.
04:34Forced into Hiding.
04:36The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time.
04:45Unlike many other versions of Zelda, the one in Ocarina of Time sees the danger coming
04:50a mile away.
04:51Sadly, that doesn't mean anyone listens to her.
04:54The young girl's prophetic dreams are dismissed by her father, who is soon betrayed and likely
04:59killed by Ganondorf.
05:00She's then forced to go into Hiding, where she must disguise herself to survive and watch
05:05her home slip further and further into violent chaos.
05:08For seven years.
05:17Players understandably feel bad for Link, essentially forced to give up his childhood,
05:21But if we had the choice of a seven-year-long nap and actually having to live through Ganondorf's
05:26rule while being endlessly hunted, we know which one we'd choose.
05:39Turned to Stone.
05:40Twice.
05:41The Legend of Zelda, The Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass.
05:51Another fun way Nintendo threatened Zelda's peace was by turning her to stone, which the
05:55studio did more than once.
05:57At the beginning of Minish Cap, the princess's excitement for the Picori Festival at Hyrule
06:01Castle is cut short when Vaati attacks.
06:04Not finding what he's after, he turns her to stone in a fit of rage.
06:12It happens again, albeit to an entirely different iteration of the character, in the DS's Phantom
06:17Hourglass.
06:19Again at the beginning, she's turned to stone and, surprisingly, still kidnapped by the
06:23monster Bellum.
06:25In a similar vein, she was also turned into a painting in A Link Between Worlds.
06:38We're grateful Nintendo finds new ways to keep things fresh.
06:41Sucks to be her, though.
06:42Cursed with endless sleep, Zelda II, The Adventure of Link.
06:47The backstory of the princess seen in Zelda II is surprisingly sad.
06:52Her father had refused to share knowledge of the Triforce with his power-hungry son.
06:56When the king passed, Zelda's brother confronted her and had a wizard place a sleeping curse
07:01on her when she wouldn't tell him what he wanted.
07:03Unfortunately, the spell also backfired, killing the wizard and leaving the brother alone in
07:08his grief and regret, and decreeing that all girls of the royal family be named after his
07:13sister.
07:18While the game doesn't specify how long she's been asleep, it's apparently been several
07:23generations, enough for there to be a new Princess Zelda in the original game.
07:27Plus, her brother being the cause makes it so much worse.
07:38Her True Colleague, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
07:53Zelda's crush on Link during the opening moments of Skyward Sword is palpable in everything
07:57she does and says.
07:59And what happens when she finally plucks up the courage to confess her love?
08:03A tornado appears and sucks her down to the surface world.
08:10Classic.
08:15From there, she goes on a journey of awakening, realizing she's a reincarnated goddess, all
08:20while being hunted by monsters and giving up her own desires for the betterment of the
08:24world.
08:25It's admirable, to say the least, but her divinity ends up being an even bigger pain
08:29when she's used in a ritual to revive the Demon King Demise.
08:33At least she gets a happy ending, but it's a hell of a journey to get there.
08:43Turned into a Dragon, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
08:53In any other series, a character turning into a dragon would be awesome.
08:57Here, it's downright tragic.
09:00After traveling back in time to right after the founding of Hyrule, meaning hundreds if
09:04not thousands of years ago, Zelda helps the heroes of the time defeat Ganondorf.
09:08However, she also knows that one day he'll return, powerful enough to break the Master
09:13Sword.
09:14To fix it, and ultimately stop him, she'll need a lot of magic.
09:26Despite being warned that the process will make her lose her sense of self, Zelda eats
09:30her secret stone, transforms, and waits an ungodly amount of time for present day Link
09:36to fix things.
09:43She played a similar lengthy waiting game in Skyward Sword, but at least her crystallization
09:48there meant she didn't have to live through everything.
09:57Loses Everything, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
10:13The most recent incarnation of the princess just might be the saddest.
10:17We've already talked about the awful pressure she was put under, but the moment when Calamity
10:21Ganon attacked only compounded those negative feelings about herself.
10:25That's on top of destroying an entire kingdom.
10:35In one instance, Zelda lost her home, her people, her father, her closest friends, and
10:42her sworn protector.
10:43Never before had any version of the character, at least in game, suffered such losses and
10:49felt such sorrow.
10:50Of course, given all the previous scenes, she blamed herself for all of it, wishing
10:54desperately that she had been able to find her powers in time to stop it from happening.
11:10What do you think is the worst thing Zelda has had to go through?
