SI's Jarrel Harris and Justin Grasso discuss 76ers' Tobias Harris calling out Kentucky
Transcript
00:00 76ers forward Tobias Harris used his media availability on Monday to address one subject.
00:06 He called for the arrest of the officers responsible for the death of Breonna Taylor.
00:11 For more on that, I'm joined by our NBA editor Jarrell Harris and Justin Grasso of all Sixers.
00:16 Jarrell, let's start with you.
00:18 When the NBA decided to resume play, a lot of players wanted to make sure they could
00:22 keep a message at the forefront.
00:24 Is this where the platform comes into play because Tobias Harris was able to get in front
00:28 of a camera and microphones and get his message for justice in the Breonna Taylor case out
00:33 there?
00:34 Yes, for sure.
00:35 I applaud guys like Tobias Harris and Jeremy Grant of the Nuggets for keeping the message
00:40 on Black Lives Matter during the NBA bubble.
00:43 So I think guys like Kyrie Irving was trying to bring this to the forefront before about
00:48 like losing the focus on these matters.
00:51 And I'm very happy that guys like Tobias Harris is using their platform to keep the media,
00:55 the NBA and its players accountable to keep this message going forward.
01:01 And Justin, Tobias obviously is a big part of the 76ers team.
01:06 How much influence do his words have behind the scenes?
01:10 Yeah, throughout the whole season, Tobias Harris has been a vocal leader for the Sixers,
01:14 but it wasn't until the NBA's hiatus when he really stepped up and he got the entire
01:19 team together doing Zoom calls.
01:21 And once the death of George Floyd happened, Brett Brown revealed that 1% of the team's
01:27 calls have been about basketball, 99% have been about social injustice.
01:32 And that's mainly because of Tobias Harris and what he wants to talk about.
01:36 He's been leading by example for these young players such as Ben Simmons and Matisse Thibault.
01:41 And now he's using his Orlando platform to get his message out there.
01:47 And I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to do this during his media availabilities,
01:51 getting the message out there for what's really important.
01:54 Yeah, and of course, Tobias Harris and the 76ers will take care of business on the court,
02:00 but he's making sure that it's not only about basketball when it comes to the message that
02:06 the 76ers and the league want to get across.
02:08 Jarrell, Justin, appreciate your time as always.
02:10 Thanks.
02:11 Thanks.
