SI's Bri Amaranthus and Chris Halicke discuss the most intriguing selections on the Texas Rangers' 60-man roster for the 2020 MLB season.
Transcript
00:00 Flexibility is the name of the game for the 2020 MLB season, which adds even more strategy
00:06 when putting together a 60-man player pool.
00:09 Chris, when it comes to the Texas Rangers, what are some of the highlights of their roster?
00:14 Are there any intriguing names?
00:17 With no minor league season in place, everybody's kind of wondering how many prospects, how
00:22 many younger guys are going to make the 60-player pools throughout Major League Baseball.
00:27 Obviously, teams have to be prepared, be ready to put as many players out there as possible.
00:34 In case of injuries and having only three weeks to get ready for the season, you might
00:38 see a spike in injuries.
00:39 Also, the common enemy that everybody has right now is COVID-19.
00:44 Each baseball team has to prepare for a number of positive cases.
00:49 Any players who test positive are going to be out for at least a couple of weeks, likely.
00:55 It may come to a point where every single player on the 60-player pools are going to
00:59 be used.
01:00 Now, we don't know that for sure.
01:03 There's still a lot.
01:04 This entire situation is fluid.
01:05 We're going to have to see how everything plays out.
01:08 However, I do think it's interesting that the Rangers had 11 of Baseball America's top
01:13 30 prospects.
01:15 That's who they went with, and they've got 55 on the roster right now.
01:19 But the one that really does intrigue me is 2019's first-round pick, Josh Young.
01:24 The reason why that is pretty intriguing to me is, first off, he wasn't in big league
01:29 camp.
01:30 So this is really the first time he's getting a lot of exposure with big league coaches,
01:35 big league teammates around him.
01:37 This is going to be the first real big league experience for him.
01:40 He's still pretty early in his development, even though he was a college player.
01:44 The Rangers weren't expecting him to be anything ready for the big leagues, anything close
01:49 to that, until probably 2021 if circumstances were normal.
01:54 Not that the Rangers plan on using him at all in 2020 if they don't have to, but because
01:59 he will be on the 60-player pool, there's a very real possibility that he might have
02:04 to play at some point.
02:06 So it is pretty interesting to see a number of prospects on there, but Josh Young being
02:10 on there is pretty interesting to me.
02:13 And so I think this is going to be a really interesting season to watch and see how many
02:16 prospects end up getting in games.
