Man charged over death of woman in regional Victoria

Police have charged a man following the death of a woman in regional Victoria.

00:00And yes, this is yet another allegation of male perpetrated violence against a woman.

00:08And in this case, police say that emergency services were called to a home in Cobram.

00:16This is a regional town which is on the Victorian New South Wales border, about 260 kilometres

00:23north of Melbourne.

00:25They were called to this house on Tuesday afternoon and discovered the body of a 49-year-old

00:30woman inside and last night we found out that detectives from Cobram Crime Investigation

00:35Unit have charged a 39-year-old man from the area with several charges.

00:41Now they include intentionally causing reckless injury, recklessly cause injury, common law

00:47assault, aggravated assault of a female and unlawful assault.

00:52Police will allege that the pair knew each other, however we don't know the details of

00:58that relationship as yet.

01:01And it's not being investigated by the Homicide Squad at the moment, it's still being looked

01:05after by Cobram Crime Investigation Unit.

01:09We understand that that is due to the fact that we are still awaiting details of those

01:14forensic results.

01:16Now we do know that this man faced an out-of-sessions hearing last night and at that stage police

01:24had been attempting to ensure that he was kept in custody and was remanded until a court

01:31appearance tomorrow in the Shepparton Magistrates Court.

01:35As I mentioned before, yet another case where it's alleged that a male has perpetrated violence

01:41against a woman.

01:43And if we take a look at the figures from Counting Women Deaths or Counting Dead Women,

01:52that body that actually looks at these sorts of cases, we've already got up to 25 women

01:58who have allegedly been killed by men.

02:02That is 11 more than at the same time last year, Dan.

02:07And most disturbingly, and particularly in relation to the allegations involving this

02:12case, you're seeing more and more of these cases that are happening in regional areas.
