00:00Defense events, Kayvon Tibideau and Aiden Hutchinson have high expectations heading
00:04into their rookie seasons as both players were drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
00:10Hey everyone, I'm Claudette Montana-Pattison with SI Right Now joined by John McAroon of
00:15All Lions and Patricia Trena from Giants Country. John, I'm coming to you first. Aiden Hutchinson,
00:21the number two overall pick in this year's NFL Draft. How can he become a difference maker for
00:27Detroit? Yeah, absolutely. I think the selection really impressed many people. The Detroit Lions
00:34almost got in trouble with the National Football League for running up to the draft board and
00:38giving up the name that quickly. That's how much they were excited to select Aiden Hutchinson.
00:44And here's why. The Detroit Lions over the past several seasons have struggled mightily.
00:49They've tried every which way in order to, along the defensive line, rush the passer.
00:55And year after year, for whatever reason, they've always ended up near the bottom of the league
00:59in getting to the quarterback in sacks. So getting a player of Aiden Hutchinson's caliber
01:05fits Detroit's culture to a tee. I mean, this is a player with a high motor who came out of
01:10Michigan after a very successful season, taking the Michigan Wolverine program for the first time
01:16to the college football playoff. And now this revamped defensive line over the past couple
01:21years, General Manager Brad Holmes has used a lot of draft resources along the defensive line,
01:27even using a second round pick for another defensive lineman. Why? The team is now going
01:32to make a slight modification along their defensive front to be a little bit more aggressive. Aiden
01:38Hutchinson and Josh Paschal combined with the likes of Charles Harris and others along the
01:44defensive line, they are going to now shift a little bit to be more aggressive to get to the
01:49quarterback. So everything that Aiden Hutchinson brings to the table is going to impress many.
01:54Look, in the NFC North, you have talented quarterbacks. And last year, Aaron Glenn saw
02:01the, you just saw it. He saw opposing quarterbacks pick apart that defense.
02:05Now with Aiden Hutchinson leading and anchoring that defensive line, you hope to see a lot more
02:11pressure and sacks for the Detroit Lions defense, his rookie season. Many are expecting in the
02:16neighborhood of five to seven sacks, relentless energy and revamping this defensive line. Aiden
02:22Hutchinson really is a wonderful addition for the Lions. All right. Well, Patricia, the Giants
02:28selected Kayvon Thibodeau number five overall. We've seen what he can do at Oregon, right? 19 sacks
02:33and 31 games during his college career. Can he make an immediate impact for the Giants defense?
02:39Absolutely. I mean, this was a huge, huge pick for the New York Giants.
02:44This is a pass rush. Remember Wink Martindale is now the defensive coordinator. He is aggressive.
02:49He likes to throw everything at opposing quarterbacks, including the kitchen sink.
02:53And now the Giants, you know, who have never really had a Batman and Robin pass rusher,
02:58they can honestly say they have that now in Thibodeau and also in Aziz Ojulari, who was,
03:04of course, their second round pick last year. Now here's the thing, you know, in the past,
03:08defensive coordinators have had to manufacture a pass rush. And that's really not something you
03:13want to do because, you know, chances are you're not going to have a great success doing that. But
03:19now you've got two guys up front in Thibodeau and as well as Ojulari who can get to the pass rusher.
03:25And here's the beauty of it. Now, good luck picking your poison as to which one you're
03:29going to double team, which is going to put other guys in single one-on-one situations,
03:34get home to these guys. You know, the Giants pass rush, they haven't had a solid pass rusher,
03:39homegrown that is, since Jason Pierre-Paul, who they took in the first round back in 2010. Now
03:45they've started to add with Ojulari and KT as now he's being called by his teammates.
03:51And they have that now and they're going to be aggressive. And more importantly, turn some of
03:57these sacks or these sack attempts that they just barely miss, you know, by a split second or two
04:04into actual sacks, which is the ultimate goal.
