00:04 exchange for a 2024 conditional fifth-round draft pick.

00:08 And according to reports, all parties will split the financials to make it happen.

00:13 I'm Claudette Montefiato-Pattison with SI Right Now, and joining me is our Carolina

00:16 Panthers insider Skylar Callahan of All Panthers.

00:20 Skylar, after months of speculating, we finally know where Baker Mayfield will play next season.

00:25 So what went into getting this deal done?

00:28 Yeah, the Panthers have been interested in Baker for a really long time,

00:31 really going back to the draft, second night of the draft when they were on the phones with

00:35 Cleveland trying to get a deal done. They couldn't agree to the financials of it,

00:39 so that's why they traded up to get Matt Corral. And what made this deal happen was the Panthers

00:45 were not keen on paying half or more than half of his $18 million salary for the 23 seasons.

00:51 So what happened is the Browns decided they will be okay with paying $10.5 million,

00:56 the Panthers will pay $5. The other $3.5 million, well, Baker Mayfield decided,

01:01 let's trim that off to make this deal happen. So he agreed to it, and that's how this deal got done.

01:05 Well, Baker Mayfield's coming in, but the Carolina Panthers already have three quarterbacks on their

01:11 roster, Sam Darnold, Matt Corral, and P.J. Walker. So what does this mean for these three guys,

01:17 especially Sam Darnold?

01:18 Yeah, it's going to mean that he's probably going to take a back seat to Baker Mayfield. I don't

01:23 want to hand over the starting job to Baker Mayfield, and I doubt that the Panther staff will

01:28 do that. I think they're going to let them battle this thing out, but in the end, it's going to be

01:32 probably Baker's job to lose. I mean, that's what they brought him here for. They didn't have enough

01:36 trust in Sam Darnold, but that's what Scott Ferrer wanted. He said all along that they needed someone

01:42 to come in and push and compete for that starting job with Sam Darnold. Matt Corral was never going

01:47 to be ready for that. He's got a big learning curve in the NFL to be ready to kind of go through,

01:52 so they needed to go out and get somebody. They got that in Baker Mayfield for P.J. Walker.

01:56 It seems like his days in Carolina are numbered at this point.
