00:00I'm here on the Isle of Man to find out more while their Parliament has voted to agree
00:12to assisted dying on the island. The Isle of Man is famous for its low taxes, the birthplace
00:19of the Bee Gees and comedians such as Norman Wisdom and George Foreman. In October 2023
00:25over 70% of the politicians in the Isle of Man Parliament voted to offer assisted dying
00:32on the island. The legal system in the Isle of Man is different from the UK, in fact they
00:38had corporal punishment until 1993. It's one of the oldest democracies in the world and
00:45one of the oldest parliaments and in fact the first areas of Europe which allowed women
00:51to vote. And now it's going to be one of the first areas in Britain if the law is passed
00:57which would allow assisted dying. Obviously assisted dying is a very controversial subject,
01:06it's shunned by many religious organisations but other people see it as a release for pain
01:12and suffering in the last few months of life. This is Tinwald or Parliament Hill where all
01:19new laws in the Isle of Man are sanctioned and read out on the 5th of July each year.
01:24So this is where the assisted dying bill will be announced formally. So the bill would have
01:30started as a petition which is read out on Tinwald Hill or Parliament Hill both in Manx
01:37and in English.
