At least five migrants died in an attempt to cross the English Channel from an area near the French town of Wimereux on Tuesday, police said.
The French coast guard confirmed a police rescue operation had found several "lifeless bodies" following a failed attempt to cross the Channel.
A coast guard spokesperson said its agents were still operating at sea after what the official called a "busy" morning, with several crossing attempts.
The attempts took place after Britain's upper house of parliament passed legislation on Monday night that will allow the U.K. government to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda rather than stay in Britain for processing.

00:00 It's a pretty much perfect day here. If you wanted to get across the channel, the moon was very bright, the sea is calm, and what we saw, what, about half an hour ago, was a packed dinghy leaving from just around the headland here in Dunkirk and heading out towards Britain.
00:18 Now actually, in a rather unusual twist, that dinghy has now gone back in towards the land. I assumed that there was a fault on board it. It's very nearly gone out of sight, but actually, it's now stopped.
00:34 I think trying to decide whether to have another go at getting back towards the shores of Britain or whether to give up and come inland, they know that if they come inland that the police are going to seize that vessel and almost certainly slice it up, rendering it unusable.
00:50 So I think an indication that there is no sign of any deterrent. I had to just spoke to a French police officer who said to me that the Rwanda bill, in his opinion, will change nothing.
