00:13 When I first started Marulho as an oceanographer,
00:16 I knew nothing about business in general,
00:19 much less eco-entrepreneurs, which is
00:22 like a whole new different thing.

00:49 Marulho exists to solve an environmental problem that
00:52 goes fishing.
00:54 My name is Beatriz.
00:55 I'm the CEO and co-founder of Marulho.

01:10 We live on an island, Ilha Grande,
01:12 a community with 350 people.

01:17 Life is really remote.
01:19 There are no supermarkets, no pharmacies.
01:22 I first came to Ilha Grande working as a diving instructor
01:26 because I was an oceanographer.
01:28 I had done some volunteer work.
01:29 I needed some money.
01:30 But I started seeing all those problems with the nets
01:33 and with waste management.
01:35 And eventually, the idea just came up.
01:38 Lucas and I started Marulho together.
01:40 He was working as a diving instructor as well.
01:42 And we just decided to make something out of it together.
01:47 It's been going on well so far.
01:48 He's my business partner, also my life partner.
01:52 We were looking at the time for a substitute for plastic bags.
01:56 And I would see all those nets.
01:59 The nets are huge.
02:00 They can be kilometers long.
02:02 So it's hard for the boats to take those nets as well.
02:05 After seeing huge amounts of nets,
02:08 we started getting those nets and turning them
02:10 into new products and helping solve out this waste management
02:15 issue.

03:47 What we do is wash them very fruitfully,
03:50 because the nets are dirty.
03:52 We wash them with chloride all the way.
03:55 After that, we give them to the collaborators of Marulho,
03:58 which are all former fishermen.

04:15 Once they give us the products back,
04:27 we will wash them again and then pack them up
04:30 to send to our website or even to other companies
04:34 that are looking for, like, tote bags, eco bags,
04:36 and stuff like that.

04:46 Marulho has already recovered more than 5.5 tons
05:06 of fishing nets.
05:07 If you do, like, a simple mat, that
05:09 would mean thousands of marine animals saved.
05:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:15 We have already generated in revenue
05:19 for the local community more than 500,000 reais
05:23 and made over 40,000 products out of it.
05:30 We are not just looking for profit.
05:32 We are looking for social and environmental impact.
