00:02 - 1983, the Teneri and a sandstorm, terrible.

00:11 Crossing the Teneri deserts, at first it seems easy.
00:19 You have a pull every five or 10 kilometers.
00:22 As it was fast, Hubert and I found ourselves
00:27 in the lead ahead of the slower Yamahas.
00:31 When the storm came, you could see less and less.

00:36 We were joined by Joao Noana Suzuki,
00:49 by some top riders on XT500s,
00:51 and in the lead, there were just a few of us,
00:53 but we could hardly see.
00:55 So we spread out to try and see the poles,
00:57 and when I turned around, it was like a Hitchcock film.
01:00 You could see your tracks disappearing.
01:03 The wind was so strong that it erased everything.
01:06 We were all lost.

01:10 And my mileage cable was broken.
01:17 It was a nightmare.
01:18 And until nightfall, I was in the mountains,
01:23 unable to see where I was going.
01:25 At one point, I saw a huge mammoth coming from the side.
01:28 It was Georges Gouane's Mercedes Peugeot refueling truck.
01:31 With a truck, you know you have food and water for a month,
01:38 so you're not gonna die of hunger or thirst.
01:41 I hung onto the truck until we got back on the track.
01:44 I found some guys.
01:45 Of course, by then, my brother had broken down.
01:48 That's what motorbikes are all about.
01:49 At the time, it was a nightmare.
01:52 So that was the route where we lost a lot of people,
01:56 and I lost my assistants.
01:57 So you find yourself in the cold, in the winds,
01:59 with just a little leather suit,
02:01 your tank torn, leaking, your thighs burnt by petrol,
