An area in Taiwan’s second largest city has received a new makeover by going back to the past after dedicated local young people spent a decade fighting to preserve some of what made Taichung City stand out.

00:00 The area around Taichung City's railway station was once a flourishing economic hub.
00:06 The crowds and businesses have trickled away, but now some of the young people in Taiwan's
00:12 second largest city are trying to revive the vigour of its heyday.
00:17 There are about five department stores in this area.
00:21 There are so many department stores that require hardware and equipment.
00:25 They need to be repaired, so they call their masters to repair them.
00:28 So the whole industry is completely connected.
00:33 These young residents press the local government to preserve the area's cultural heritage
00:38 as they redevelop areas of the city, such as these historic train tracks,
00:43 which were meant to be torn up.
00:45 The local cultural heritage team thinks that this space is a very important cultural heritage.
00:51 If it can be preserved and used in a public and open way,
00:55 it will have a significant impact on the city's historical value.
01:00 These activists weren't even born when this area of Taichung was in its prime.
01:05 But after ten years of dedicated work, they've managed to bring back some of the sparkle
