March and Rally for an Independent Scotland in Glasgow

This event was held in partnership with Pensioners for Independence and Believe in Scotland.

The UK pays one of the worst State Pensions in the developed world. An independent Scotland can do better.

Believe in Scotland and Pensioners for Independence are calling for independence supporters to show up to march for independence and a fairer pension for all.

00:42 [APPLAUSE]
00:45 My name is Sadie Matthews, and I felt
00:47 compelled to come to the march today
00:49 because as a disabled young person,
00:51 Westminster is not meeting my needs or my family's needs.
00:55 Currently, the carers' wage for 24/7 care is 80 pounds a week,
01:01 and that is taken pound for pound out of universal credit.
01:04 And Westminster, quite frankly, does not care.
01:07 And I know that I'm not going to get my needs seen to,
01:09 or my rights respected, with Westminster around.
01:13 So we need an independent Scotland
01:15 to further the rights of disabled members
01:16 of the community, such as myself.
01:19 What was the atmosphere like on the march today?
01:21 It was wonderful.
01:22 It was so encouraging, and there's
01:24 so much hope here for what we're working towards,
01:27 which is independence.
01:28 And it's lovely to see such a positive atmosphere
01:31 in such a divisive climate currently.
01:33 [APPLAUSE]
01:36 [BAND PLAYING]
01:39 I'm Cameron.
01:42 I'm here today to show support for independence.
01:45 Young people are the most likely to vote for independence.
01:48 About three quarters of young people support independence,
01:53 and we need to be showing up to these rallies
01:54 to show our support for this cause.
01:57 And I'm also here today with the YSI.
02:00 We're promoting our international conference,
02:02 which we're putting on in May next year,
02:04 to promote Scottish independence within major parties
02:08 throughout Europe through their young people.
02:11 And it's just a very good cause as well today,
02:14 with ending pensioner poverty.
02:18 And it's just a really important issue.
02:20 And as well as Palestine, we're supporting the Palestinian
02:23 people today with the Palestinian Solidarity Group
02:27 joining the rally as well.
02:29 So it's a whole range of issues today, not just independence,
02:32 that we're all showing up for today.
02:34 And what has the atmosphere been like for you?
02:36 It has been absolutely inspiring.
02:38 Always we're inspiring.
02:40 We're a very optimistic movement.
02:44 And I mean, it's just absolutely empowering
02:48 coming to these places and these rallies.
02:51 And it makes you feel part of the movement
02:53 and involved in the politics of our country.

03:10 Today I had the honour of being one
03:12 of the leaders of the March for Independence,
03:15 the Believe in Scotland March.
03:17 Because we believe that this country can be fairer,
03:19 it can be greener.
03:21 And fundamentally, we believe that it
03:22 should be for the people of Scotland
03:24 to decide our own future.
03:26 We couldn't have asked for a better day for it.
03:28 This is a day for our movement to come together in hope.
03:32 Because we have hope for this country.
03:34 We've come together to share our vision,
03:36 our different visions for what an independent Scotland could
03:39 look like.
03:40 And that key message that we can all unite behind,
03:43 that message that it is for the people of Scotland
03:45 to choose their own governments.
03:47 It's for the people of Scotland to choose their own future.
03:50 Today shows once again the strength of our independence
03:53 movement and how we are yet again taking one step closer
03:57 towards achieving that status for Scotland,
04:00 the status of an independent, normal European country.
