00:00And with me at ringside, I haven't really got to say good day and get there with Barry.
00:18I'll run through his tale of the tape shortly.
00:20Australian middleweight women's title, 39 place 33.
00:24And we gave you the tale of the tape when they walked to the ring.
00:30We're set for eight twos.
00:35Barry Hall in commentary, Dempsey McKean, the tower, and I'm Mark Warren.
00:44And this is the fists and the fury.
00:47And both girls walk prep to the minute and both girls are high on energy under the bright
00:53lights as we go live on Stand Sport Australia.
00:55I'll tell you what, this doesn't get more stylistic, great match up here.
01:00You've got one coming from a great amateur pedigree.
01:03Obviously, Desi Robinson's got a bit more experience in the pro ranks, not as much amateur
01:06fights.
01:07But this is going to be turned out to be a crackerful.
01:09I reckon this might even be fight of the night as well, especially for the prestigious Australian
01:13title.
01:16The belt means plenty.
01:19Just the one fight as a professional for Kay Scott.
01:23But such a distinguished amateur will make the transition.
01:31And she wasn't showboating, Barry, I think that's loosening the shoulder a little bit.
01:34She was loosening the shoulder in round one, Mark, but Desley's been in some real wars
01:40in a professional sense.
01:41But, you know, Dempsey spoke about Kay's amateur pedigree.
01:45Let's see how it puts her instead.
01:47It's an eight-round fight, so it's certainly not three.
01:50And we all know sometimes no amateur pedigree doesn't mean anything.
01:53I'm zero amateur fighter, turned to the pro ranks as well, so it's been proven over and
01:58over again.
01:59Isaac Hardman, another boxer come from MMA, went into the pro scene and has been killing
02:02the game there as well.
02:04So sometimes you don't need that amateur pedigree.
02:06Obviously, it does help in some sense, but, you know, it's still a 50-50 fight here, I
02:10think, as well.
02:11A two-time Commonwealth Games medallist is Kay Scott.
02:17Sloppy punches from Kay as we near the end of round one.
02:23A little untidy.
02:24Now gets back on the jab, and that's the end of round number one.
02:29Now Barry Ault, Captain of the Swans from 2005 through 2008, a four-time All-Australian.
02:41The Bob Skelton medal, the Michael Tuck medal, an AFL Hall of Famer who then decided at the
02:47tail end of the career to cross to boxing, and we'd all...
02:54We'll come back to that.
02:56Here's some replay action.
02:58Yeah, the girls are just warming into it, obviously.
03:01It was a little bit scrappy in the first round.
03:02I'd like to see a little bit more jazz from each one, and obviously, distance management.
03:07This is a long fight.
03:08It's eight rounds, so I'm sure that'll happen in the second round.
03:12Just for everyone at home, how many amateur fights as a junior for yourself?
03:16How often were you training?
03:17I had 12 amateur fights.
03:18Okay.
03:19Yeah.
03:20Okay.
03:21So I ended up being the Victorian amateur champion, and I was very young at that stage,
03:24but yeah, had a bit of an amateur pedigree.
03:26A lot of people ask the question, and the fire is still there, correct?
03:31That's a sure...
03:32It sure is.
03:33Well, we'll explore that a little later, but this is round two, and the ANBF Australian
03:38middleweight women's championship is on the line, and both girls are hungry.
03:44Des with a slapping right hand, if you like, down low.
03:49Scott a little untidy.
03:50A right hand that almost lands on the button.
03:54Yeah, a little bit more tidy than the second round.
03:56I think the first round, just a bit of nervous energy there as well.
03:59I had to shake off that rust a little bit for the second round, tightening up, starting
04:02to put the shots together a little bit more, as Kate Scott just gets tagged with a good
04:05two-punch combo.
04:07So, Kate tries to go underneath, and Des is focusing upstairs, and again, Kate tries to
04:13dig to the body, and Des looking for the opening.
04:19Desley Robinson.
04:28Three-punch combination from Kate.
04:31Sloppy work from Kate, to be honest.
04:34Yeah, I think she's rushing to work a little bit too much.
04:36She's lunging engines to bring her feet in a little bit more, especially bring those
04:40feet in behind that double jab, maybe starting to throw some straighter punches as well.
04:44But what she was was very, very busy underneath.
04:47Work right underneath there.
04:52Right hand that scores to the body from Kate Scott.
04:57Throws out the left hand, left hand to the body from Kate Scott.
05:01Tries to back up Robinson, taken on the gloves by Robinson.
05:08Left hand by Desley, taken on the gloves.
05:12Kate circles to the left.
05:14Which is direction?
05:15A left hand that may have scored, the hook may have scored.
05:19Throws one up the middle, mostly taken on the gloves.
05:25Tell you what, when they have their exchange, you have an exchange together, you know, there
05:27might be a bit of a stalemate at times, and they get into it.
05:30They've come back with a nice big flurry, it's what we like to see as well, a nice bit
05:35of action.
05:36They did settle in that round, they obviously used their jab and utilised their jab a little
05:40bit more.
05:41But yes, there were flurries and they did get a bit out of control at times, but it
05:45is a two minute round, we've got to keep that in mind.
05:47They've got to get their work done, they've got to try and win that round.
05:49So yes, they have settled in, but at times there is flurries.
05:55Oxford commentary, Vic Badd, Barry Hall, Dempsey McCain, the tower.
06:04From the JBS Arena, I tell you what, I've got the tour of Ipswich this afternoon, and
06:14I went with Steven Payos, and I tell you, to get a chance, you've got to go to the Ipswich
06:18Jets Leagues Club for a snitty.
06:20I was just about to say mate, I was born and bred in Ipswich, so make sure you don't say
06:24anything nasty about my hometown.
06:25No way bro, no way.
06:26I'm only sitting a metre away from you.
06:27I will say though, the coffee was a little on the steep side, 13.50 for two long blacks,
06:35I digress, three of eights, sit for eight twos.
06:40Watch out, watch out, stop, stop, stop, watch your heads.
06:45I reckon I get two copies for $12 even in Melbourne.
06:51I did see some instruction from Robinson's corner, and he wants to see a few more right
06:58hands, which has been evident early.
07:00She threw a big right hand, it was glancing, but that's what they're trying to set up.
07:06It's just mostly about that confidence isn't it, as you know Badd, when you're in the fight,
07:09you want to let those hands go, you want to land the power shots, you don't want to feel
07:12vulnerable all the time, it's just about backing yourself and having that confidence, and when
07:16you do see those openings, you've got to let it go, and let it go quite viciously.
07:21Robinson scored there, off the jab, three of eights.
07:27It's been a lot more strategic, isn't she?
07:30Very much so.
07:33Seven professional fighters, five wins, and now Paul's under pressure.
07:41You have to say, the longer the rounds, obviously it's going to fall into the hands of Robinson's
07:45favour, obviously Kay Scott coming from an amateur background, three by three minute
07:50rounds, and obviously coming into the pros, working towards up the four, six and eight
07:56rounders, which she's only had the one pro fight, so Robinson had the seven pro fight,
08:01so the experience is definitely in her court.
08:06Kay respectfully damps Barry, take your pick, is she rattled?
08:14I'm not seeing that rhythm that I know she has as such an experienced amateur.
08:20Yeah definitely, I think the competition brings that out in you as well, the harder the competition,
08:24the harder to get going, the harder it is to look good and do your thing as well, so
08:29I think maybe she's still trying to find her rhythm, find her openings, ease into the fight
08:33a little bit more, but we'll have to see how she goes over the next handful of rounds.
08:37You do have to keep in mind also that this is their second professional fight, and she's
08:41in an eight rounder, not many people do that, so kudos to her, and yes, high risk, high
08:46reward, she obviously, that's for an Australian title, which anyone would jump at, but to
08:50go from three rounds, and I'm not sure what her first professional fight, I would consider
08:54it to be four, to jump into eight rounds straight away, good on her, as I said, high risk, high
08:59reward.
09:00Yeah and like you said, it's the risk versus reward isn't it, to be able to fight for that
09:04Australian title on your second professional fight, means a great deal, I fought for one
09:08on my 11th pro fight, so to fight for the second, mate, that would mean everything as
09:13well, and obviously that's going to lead on to defending the title and then possible regional
09:17belts after that.
09:18November of 2023 at the Hornsby RSL, she did eight rounds with Connie Chan, and got a decision
09:24there.
09:25Eight rounds straight up.
09:26Yeah.
09:27Well done.
09:28Yeah, absolutely.
09:29Congrats, Kay Scott.
09:32The girls are bringing the heat to the JBS arena.
09:40Desi just a little sharper off the jab.
09:49Trying to loop the left hook around the guard.
09:51Yeah, see right there would have been the perfect opportunity to drop that body rip
09:55down, you know, her guard was nice and high, come up with a left hook, right hook up top,
09:59if she was just to dig those body shots after, she would have had a lot of success there
10:02as well.
10:05Kay feints, again tries to get that looping left hook around the guard.
10:12Now she's snapping and popping with the left hand, I like that more from Kay.
10:17Desi looking for an opening, Kay starting to settle.
10:22This is round four, Australian middleweight title on the line.
10:27Wherever you're watching on Stansport Australia.
10:32Robertson catches the attention of Kay Scott.
10:36She's at her distance now Desi, she's at a real comfortable distance, she's moving her
10:40feet nicely, popping that jab out in the front of that right hand every now and again.
10:47Scoring punch, it looks sloppy but there was some heat on it from Kay.
10:52Yes, I see a bit of variation in the jabs to the body, very underrated tactic there,
10:57I love dropping that jab down the body and then following it up to a head shot straight
11:01after, trying to drop that guard a little bit, get the head to dip and then come up
11:04stairs.
11:05That was the first time I've seen a jab to the body all fight so far, I'd like to see
11:08a few more.
11:10Tripled, puts four jabs together, Desi Robertson and puts some heat on the right hand.
11:18Kay gets out of the way.
11:21End of the round.
11:24Tell you what, you can tell Desi Robertson is definitely the crowd favourite here, you
11:27can hear the support chairs, when she walked down the aisle, the crowd was cheering for
11:31her.
11:32She's got a lot of confidence in her, she's got a lot of confidence in her, she's got
11:36You can hear the support chairs, when she walked down, every time she lands a good shot
11:40here, so, got plenty of support here, only up the road from Logan as well, so, and that
11:45makes all the difference as well to hear a nice loud crowd backing you.
11:49It's a really important point you bring up Dems about variation of your jab, jab to the
11:53chest, jab to the body, because one thing you do get prepared for when you go into a
11:57fight is to be punching the head, that's one thing you do get in your mind, you're going
12:00to get punched in the head.
12:01Definitely.
12:02When you get a hard shot to the chest or the body, it shocks you, and you go, hang
12:06on, what's going on here?
12:07It just totally changes your mindset.
12:09Definitely, and that's what it's about doing, or to drive that right hand to the body and
12:13come over the top with the left hook, and even look a man in the eye as you drive to
12:16the body, you know the hands are coming down and setting up that left hook.
12:20100%, that's one of my favourite shots, especially as the southpaw, the left straight is over
12:24there, come upstairs with the right hook to the head, southpaw against all four, that's
12:28a textbook combination move as well, so, one of my favourites.
12:31We may see that later on tonight.
12:34Let's hope so.
12:36Sweet Pea is in the house, but right now, all attention, Kay Scott, Desley Robinson.
12:53Work inside, work inside.
12:55Joel Keegan, one of the top trainers in Australia, he just eats this stuff up, so Kay in very
13:04good hands, and of course, leading the way or leading the corner for Sammy Goodman.
13:12Five of eight, for the AMBF Australian Middleweight Women's Championship, live on Stansport Australia,
13:27in conjunction with Icons Entertainment, Mark Warren in commentary, Barry Hall, AFL Hall
13:34of Famer, in co-commentary with Dempsey McCain.
13:39Back to the action.
13:49And her style, she just looks so neat, I'm trying to say it as respectfully as possible.
13:55She looks to have a ping on the punch, she looks to be setting up her jab, she just looks
14:00neat.
14:08Change the tempo a little bit, work your faster shots in, sink your power shots in.
14:12Not everything has to be hard, and that's how you conserve the energy, especially coming
14:15into these later rounds as well.
14:19So Desley is laser focused, left, right, left, right, back goes Kay Scott.
14:28She's okay, and there's a smile on the guys from Kay Scott.
14:35End of five, non-stop action this fight as well.
14:40Take us through it Dempsey.
14:41Five rounds, an absolute cracker of a fight so far, I did call five the night, so far
14:44it's turning into just that.
14:47It is a start a little bit scrappy, but it has turned into a strategic battle.
14:51Desley with her jab has certainly taken over the fight from mine, and she's been really
14:56smart about it, as I said, conserving energy, boxing really, really smart.
15:00Yes, they do get in flurries at times, but Desley's covered up, and she's not getting
15:04hit with any shots, so she's doing a pretty good job at the moment.
15:07Yeah, she's definitely the cleaner boxer as well, and that's what the judges like to see
15:10as well, clean shots landing, not so much scrappiness, but her defense is good, she's
15:15not getting hit with too much at all, but yeah, just a good variation of shots and clean
15:19punching, that's what we all want to see.
15:31This is round number six.
15:38Straight back where they left off.
15:42She always opens the rounds with a nice one-two, Desley, a big right hand.
15:46That's it, if you can always start the rounds hard, finish the rounds hard, it always looks
15:50good in the judges' eyes as well, especially finishing the round strong, you know, we want
15:55to leave a good impression on the judges at the end of that round.
15:59She's trying to see where Kay is.
16:04Sydney, New South Wales, but Joel's on the central coast, I thought she might be a central
16:08coaster.
16:09Anyway, that's not important now, what's important is points in the bank, and I think, gentlemen,
16:15can we safely say Desley Robinson in front, but this is not over.
16:21Yeah, I think she's ahead, but these next two rounds are really important, and Scott's
16:26certainly not out of the fight at this stage.
16:28No, I think Desley's definitely taken the lead in this fight, but I don't think Kay Scott
16:32is by any way means out of depth in this fight at all, it's not completely one-sided, but
16:37I think Desley Robinson is definitely edging out this fight, but it is turning into a great
16:41fight as well, both girls landing some good shots.
16:44Chris McCullen in the corner, there's another great trainer and a young man with a great
16:49boxing IQ, Chris McCullen.
16:53Not many bad fighters come out of that gym, that's for sure.
16:56Absolutely.
16:58Some good people that come out of Brisbane, including Angelo DiCarlo, who guides the career
17:03of the Tower, Dempsey McKean.
17:06One of the greatest men you'll ever meet, Angelo DiCarlo, nice boxing group team, and
17:09they've got a massive contract at the moment, Alfie DiCarlo as well, the opponents coach,
17:13Nathan, the whole family, Carmela, the wife, they've got a great season of boxing coming
17:19up on Channel 7.
17:21I'll let you get away with that once, just to say I'm inexperienced at this caper.
17:30Pretty good variation from Desley, right hand to the head and to the body as well, pretty
17:35good round for her.
17:37End of round six, good on you Angelo, Alfie, Nathan.
17:46Yeah, great team, I've been with them since my second pro fight, great people, some of
17:51the best you'll ever meet.
17:54As you can see, the body shot there from Desley, she started to vary that right hand, she came
17:58out from the start of the round with a big right hand, then she started to vary it to
18:02the body, which is a really good thing you can do, you obviously want to mix it up as
18:07much as you can, body to head, body to head, and she did it quite well.
18:11And the more you can invest in the body early on the fight, the better it's going to be
18:14and later on you start to sat back and think a little bit, little by little, round by round,
18:19it all adds up towards the end of the fight.
18:22I'd love to have a camera in case Scott, Joel is animated her trainer, and he doesn't give
18:28a lot of sympathy, but it'll be a lot of words of encouragement, and he has to lift his fighter
18:34and he'll do what it takes, at the moment, at the moment.
18:39Let's see if we get a big one-two from Desley to open the round.
18:42Starts with a big shot and take it on the arm.
18:48Kane, pressure, she's done the work.
18:54Desley circling to the left, Kane tries to dig the right hand low, puts up the guard,
19:00probably one or two scoring shots there.
19:03Robinson underneath.
19:09Referee, good shot, John Watson separates the fighters and here we go again.
19:20Doubles up the jab but taken on the gloves, the heads almost come together.
19:27Seven of eight, Australian middleweight title on the line.
19:31Kane, caught on the chin by Desley Robinson, no doubt about it.
19:38Jab up the middle but scores from Desley.
19:43Now Kane really has to start to look at whatever she can do to stop Desley Robinson,
19:49because the card's getting away, the points might be getting away.
19:53Scott's looking for a left hook off Desley's jab, so obviously instructions during,
19:58between the rounds, watch out for that left hook.
20:02I think Kay Scott is just throwing a little bit too wild at the moment,
20:05I think she needs to shorten up her hooks a little bit as well,
20:07she's going a bit too wide, leaving herself open at times,
20:10she just shortens up those shots, tightens them up, much more success.
20:14Kay got the left hook around the guard, doubles up the left hand.
20:19Two-time Commonwealth medallist in with Desley Robinson,
20:25who has been pinpoint accurate tonight.
20:28Kane with a game plan and she hasn't shifted, jumps on a left hand,
20:32my goodness, that's a dangerous one.
20:35Well, the girls are willing, that's assured, what a great fight.
20:39Seven of eight, and gee whiz, there was a time when I, you know,
20:43I wasn't an enthusiast necessarily, and I know times have changed,
20:48but wow, they are athletes, these ladies.
20:52That's the thing, I think women feel like they've got some big shoes,
20:56they want to cause a big upset, they want to come in and put a show on them,
21:00and show that they can make some crap fights just like the men do as well.
21:04And I tell you what, majority of the time the women are in better fights
21:07than the men are as well, they literally leave it all in there as well.
21:12And as we've seen, Kay Scott, as I mentioned, I reckon she got a message
21:16that that left hook is there, and yes, she was a bit wild as you mentioned,
21:19but there was a couple that did get through, so it did work for her.
21:22It's interesting to see if she sticks with it, it's the last round,
21:24she'll need more than a left hook to try and put Besley on her backside.
21:29Yeah, she definitely needs something big here to be able to take home a win.
21:33This is the eighth and final round of the ladies'
21:39in search of the Australian title,
21:44the middleweight title.
21:49John Watson has done a fantastic job as the third man.
21:55And Desley hasn't taken her foot off the accelerator, that's for sure,
21:57she could probably coast this round and jab it out, but she wants to fight it out.
22:02The girl from Logan City, she's got points in the bank,
22:06will she stay away or will she trade?
22:11Kay, I think at this stage, needs a stoppage.
22:14Work inside, work inside.
22:17She tries to escape the clutches,
22:20as Kay, underneath over the top,
22:25scoring punch from Kay Scott.
22:29She certainly needs a stoppage mark, as you said, but she doesn't look out of her depth.
22:32She's certainly up for this standard, that's for sure.
22:36And you obviously could get the win here tonight as well,
22:38that's such a huge scope for her as well,
22:41to be able to beat a two-time Commonwealth gold medalist as well,
22:44with a good amateur pedigree.
22:46Desley Robinson from Logan Boxing.
22:51Milo, they call the girl, and she has been primed to the minute.
23:01Big right hand from Kay Scott.
23:04She won't die wandering, that's for sure.
23:11Work inside, work inside.
23:12She's just rushing in a little bit, is Kay Scott.
23:14She needs to bring that speed under, maybe push in with the double jab,
23:17rather than just kind of lunging in and not throwing anything.
23:20She's kind of falling into some structure.
23:21Big right hand to the body by Robinson.
23:26Kay trying to work her way out of the clinch.
23:36Well done, girls.
23:39Great fight.
23:41Well done, ladies.
23:51You wanted good boxing.
23:54You wanted great entertainment.
23:57Icons Entertainment.
24:01And Stan Sport Australia.
24:05Well done, ladies.
24:12Well done, ladies.
24:17Replay action.
24:20It'll certainly be interesting to see the scorecards, Mark,
24:22because there were a few close rounds,
24:24and it'll be interesting to see how the judges score it,
24:26which way they go.
24:28Obviously, different sides of the ring show different things,
24:30so this could be closer than we think.
24:34And as we've seen in boxing many times before,
24:36there's been some very wide judges on the scorecards as well.
24:41It's been a more rapid process,
24:42so it wouldn't be surprising it's a lot closer than we think it is,
24:44yes.
24:46And there's been a lot of answers, though,
24:49so Kay Scott obviously belongs at this level.
24:51In her second pro fight, Australian title.
24:53It's a huge effort from her,
24:54and she didn't look out of her depth at all.
24:56Not at all.
25:03So we'll wait for our judges to tally.
25:05And we'll join Steven Pauwes, taking in the water, Kaye.
25:14I think Chris McCollum's pretty happy with what he's seen.
25:24In fact, Kaye Scott putting her hands together.
25:28Great sportsmanship.
25:29Plenty of support local on hand for Desley Robinson.
25:44We go send a ring to Steven Pauwes.
26:02We're just waiting.
26:03We're waiting on one judge.
26:05Everything's okay.
26:07The very professional Steven Pauwes, he's handled it beautifully.
26:12And that can happen.
26:13It gets nervy.
26:14Where have you gone, Steve?
26:15Where's Wally?
26:16Steven Pauwes, mate.
26:17How good does he look every time the boys show up in Townsville?
26:18He had about four different beautiful suits, man.
26:19He's sharp.
26:20Sharp as a bowling ball.
26:21All right.
26:22You make him laugh.
26:23Let's go up to the very classy Steven Pauwes.
26:33Ladies and gentlemen, after eight championship rounds, we go to the judges' scorecards for
26:39the decision.
26:42Judge Paul Williams scores the contest, 76-76, a draw.
26:51Judges Paul Tapley and Selwyn Currie score the contest, 77-75 and 77-76, respectively.
27:04Both judges in favour of your winner, who becomes the new AMBF Australian Middleweight
27:12Women's Championship by majority decision, red corner, Kaye Scott.
27:27I'd be surprised if, you know, it was a lot closer to what the judges are seeing now rather
27:33than us.
27:34But that was a bit of a shock to me.
27:35I thought Desi Robinson won that fight.
