Comedy drama about three students who prepare to travel with their families for interviews for admission to Queen's College, Cambridge. Each come from a different background. For working class Neil it is an opportunity to better himself, something his parents never had the chance of, but he is somewhat unnerved by his mother's superstitious premonitions. For upper class Pippa, her nerves are made worse by her father's expectations of her, as he too attended Queen's College and failure to do so would only make things worse at home. Meanwhile autistic Malcolm is determined to be independent and find his way there on his own, but his mother cannot help but worry and decides to travel up there unnoticed just so she can keep an eye on him. It proves a journey of discovery for all concerned...

Starring Maureen Lipman, David Ross, Benedict Sandiford, Tom Wilkinson, Anna Carteret, Laura Howard, James Fleet, Alec Guinness, Kathryn Pogson, Grant Warnock, Laurie Ventry, Kathy Kiera Clarke, Susannah Wise, Lila Kaye, Pippa Hinchley, Cheryl Fergison, Gilian Barge and Tom Bowles. This was written by Jack Rosenthal (Maureen Lipman's husband) and was originally broadcast on April 5th 1996. It proved popular enough with viewers that it inspired a sequel, Cold Enough For Snow a year later (which I sadly do not have) This is notable not only for being Alec Guinness' final screen role, but also for featuring Laura Howard just a year before she would find fame as Cully Barnaby in Midsomer Murders. This is from my own recording on a video tape, so apologies in advance for any glitches there may be. I noticed that there does not seem to be any videos of this online, so I thought I'd upload my own copy for anyone seeking this out. I found it surprisingly enjoyable, and I hope you do too.
