The state government's housing reforms are being billed as the biggest overhaul of planning in the state's history, and now the government is going even further. Earmarking an extra six suburbs for higher density housing in Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle and that's on top of dozens of sites already slated for more density across Sydney.

00:00 Sydney has a case of growing pains and the Premier's prescription building even more
00:07 housing and taking his planning reforms even further.
00:11 If we're not building homes for the next generation of young Australians they will
00:15 up and leave New South Wales en masse.
00:18 Six extra suburbs, Belmore, Leckember, Punchbowl and Cardiff, Cockle Creek and Woiwoi have
00:24 been identified for higher density housing. That's on top of 31 suburbs already earmarked
00:30 for new housing within 400 metres of transport hubs.
00:34 The plan is to create 170,000 extra new homes over the next 15 years.
00:40 Too many young people are up and moving, are leaving Sydney. Too many people are standing
00:45 in rental queues every weekend. Too many people are finding it unaffordable.
00:50 But the opposition says it's a one size fits all approach with no extra money for transport,
00:56 schools or open space.
00:58 When it comes to what the Premier's announced today, he's held a gun at councils heads and
01:03 said that they need to accept it.
01:05 Locals are more open to the plan.
01:07 People are desperate to have a roof over them now, what's the difference where they live?
01:11 It is a bit hard on infrastructure but if you go out further out it takes an hour and
01:16 a half to get back into the traffic.
01:18 The State Government says 12 of the 13 councils impacted by these changes are working with
01:24 it to develop plans for their areas that would meet or exceed the State Government's housing
01:29 targets.
01:30 The exception is Kuringai Council on Sydney's North Shore, which says it wants more time
01:35 for detailed planning.
01:37 I believe that all NSW councils will want to plan ahead of these changes but that option
01:43 is not being given to us. We're being told it's coming in April, take it or leave it.
01:48 We believe that everyone should be coming on this journey and you can't just say 'nup,
01:52 nup' it's not up to us to be part of it.
01:54 The planning reforms take effect from this month, with some councils getting extensions
01:59 to meet more ambitious targets.
