00:00 Considering Carver's got more than one mask, you might find yourself going back
00:04 for seconds. Here's your look at the NECA Toys Thanksgiving Ultimate John Carver
00:08 action figure.
00:11 [Music]
00:39 This year there will be no leftovers. A masked killer terrorizes Plymouth,
00:43 Massachusetts in this Eli Roth directed horror flick that originated from the
00:47 trailer in the film Grindhouse. This Thanksgiving Ultimate John Carver action
00:50 figure is highly articulated and comes with all the trimmings - musket, sledgehammer,
00:54 axe, dart gun, meat tenderizer, knives, removable hat, extra hands and three
00:59 interchangeable masks. I hope you made some room on your shelf because this
01:03 figure's got plenty of sides. Just before of course we get a closer look at the
01:06 NECA Toys Thanksgiving Ultimate John Carver, the tape measure is gonna tell us
01:10 - now keeping in mind again he's got his pilgrim hat on that's gonna make the
01:13 figure a little bit taller - but with the hat already on him he's gonna stand
01:16 almost eight inches in height where the figure is gonna be about 20 centimeters
01:19 tall. I've had quite the adventure, let me tell you, about trying to get my hands
01:24 on the Ultimate John Carver figure here. Now probably one of the primary reasons
01:27 why you guys haven't yet seen the review here on this channel was that I ordered
01:30 this guy, pre-ordered this guy well into last year when NECA first announced that
01:33 they were doing John Carver figures and that they were gonna be making pre-orders
01:36 available on their site. It was probably the same time that I jumped right away to
01:40 their site and I put the pre-orders in for both the retro version of John
01:43 Carver, the retro cloth version, and the Ultimate release. This is the first time
01:48 by the way, full disclosure, I've ever ordered anything directly from NECA. I've
01:51 always been the type that just goes to other online sites and do my ordering of
01:54 NECA there but I thought this is a pre-order, I've never done this before, I'm
01:57 gonna jump over to their site, get the pre-order in and hopefully get the
02:01 Carvers right away. Well one thing I didn't know that I know now with NECA
02:05 and a lot of companies do this also as well so it's not solely just NECA, is
02:07 that companies a lot of times to save the shipping they'll wait until
02:11 everything in your order becomes in stock before they ship your entire order.
02:14 So even though Ultimate John Carver has been available for a bit and again one
02:18 of the reasons why I'm a little late on this review, even though that's been
02:21 available the retro cloth hasn't. They listed it as a release date in May so
02:25 that meant unfortunately even though they had the Ultimate they weren't gonna
02:28 ship everything until the retro cloth was gonna be available in May. While
02:31 impatiently I couldn't wait any longer not only just for the sake of the review
02:35 but also to have finally Carver in my collection I ordered from another online
02:38 site where I normally would normally go to get all my NECA figures. Ironically
02:43 enough as this guy showed up to my doorstep or up to my post service where
02:46 I pick up my mail, ironically days later I got an email from NECA saying that
02:52 they were gonna be shipping the retro cloth and the Ultimate John Carvers and
02:54 they're now on their way. I know that means now I'm gonna have myself a second
02:58 John Carver which isn't a bad thing at all it just will mean with the figure
03:01 already having as many accessories as he does and three different face plates
03:05 that will then also mean I can display the figure in two different ways. That
03:08 just made a short story very long. We're gonna shorten this up also a little bit
03:12 as well for comparison's sake let's bring in some other holiday horror
03:15 slashers. Here's what John Carver looks like with the Ultimate Michael Myers that
03:18 got packed along with Sam Loomis. Yeah looking at the two by the way as well
03:21 you probably can see there's a lot of molding that gets shared between the two
03:24 figures. The arms are exactly the same, the top of the torso except for the fact
03:28 that Michael Myers has a popped collar and bullet holes riddled across
03:32 his torso. It seems to be that they're also using the same molding because of
03:35 course you'll see as well he has that very kind of familiar crescent moon
03:39 indentation the little wrinkle that he has on the one one pocket is also shared
03:44 with Michael Myers. The only other thing that they actually don't
03:47 share funny enough is the part of the legs below the knees. I'll show you guys
03:51 that when we get a little bit more closer inspection of John Carver. They're
03:54 actually using different lower legs between Michael Myers and Carver. Another
03:58 figure as well celebrating the holidays. A holiday of love. Here's what the figure
04:01 looks like with my bloody Valentines the minor. Boy that was long-winded. Okay let's
04:05 look at the accessories now that come in clear with the figure. John Carver gets
04:08 himself a pair of knives. Two different knives for two different purposes. One
04:12 purpose is just to stab people while the other one being a carving knife is good
04:16 for slicing up meat. I hear the juiciest meat is in the thigh. Both of these look
04:20 like they've been painted in both the blades done in silver and then the
04:23 actual handles you can see as well been painted in black. Don't worry he does
04:27 come with necessary hands for holding all of these accessories. Some of the
04:30 hands like these ones here have the fingers permanently attached to their
04:33 thumbs but they're suitable for holding like for example the knife. Hands that
04:36 have for example and just grab a couple of examples here. This one is another one
04:40 that has you can see like the fingers attached onto the thumb. So again hold
04:43 good for holding like the tenderizer and all those other things. Then he also has
04:46 hands that have the fingers separate from the thumbs and those were good for
04:50 holding like the musket, the axe, the sledgehammer, all those other accessories.
04:53 So he gets like quite a lot of hands. We'll also move those to the side. The
04:57 figure comes in clue with the dart gun. The dart gun is something that we see in
05:00 the movie. I mean for a very short period of time granted but it's molded here in
05:03 black plastic. There's a little bit of indication of silver added in there as
05:06 well and the chamber at the top I guess that would be the part that holds the
05:09 darts has been painted in a slightly different black from the majority of the
05:13 gun. Again you you get a hand actually for that. There's one that is a
05:16 little bit wider of a grip and that's perfect for also holding the dart gun.
05:20 Also too like the hands that he already has in his forearms already have
05:24 extended fingers. So if you wanted to have those hands be the hands that hold
05:27 the dart gun you can also use those also as well. The figure also comes in clue
05:31 with a tenderizer. I don't know many people that tenderize turkeys but
05:34 certainly if you want to tenderize other meats or just tenderize people that you
05:37 have held hostage the figure also comes in clue that as well. We see also this in
05:42 the movie. It's been nicely painted here and it kind of more rusted brown and
05:45 again like you can take any one of those well these smaller gripped hands you can
05:49 take the tenderize and fit them easily in there and they're not gonna be going
05:52 anywhere. The figure also comes in clue with a musket. I love the look of this
05:56 musket. It's molded again here in plastic. I love the the way they've added the
05:59 grain first of all so it kind of gives it a wood look. They've painted the flint
06:03 stock there is a flint stock on the top there and painted the additional barrel
06:06 there in gold so it's a little bit of a different color than the silver or kind
06:09 of more the bronze finish that they have on to the side. You probably could
06:13 just have the figure using the hands that he has right now for holding.
06:16 By the way as well flip this around so you can see it's a little bit different of
06:19 detail there on the back of the of the musket. Just a nice looking gun
06:22 accessory. Put that off to the side. The figure also comes in clue with a
06:25 sledgehammer. Sledgehammer and actually the axe are probably gonna be one of my
06:29 go-to's when it comes to displaying this figure. I think more so I'm probably
06:32 gonna be settling on the idea of displaying the figure with the axe but I
06:35 really like the idea that he also comes in clue with the crowbar or not the
06:38 crowbar with the sledgehammer and not to really say that it has to be dedicated
06:41 to this figure. Just because you know again like these accessories come stock
06:44 with Carver doesn't not mean that you could just not have the displayed with
06:47 another figure. So like Michael Myers wants to use a sledgehammer hey why not
06:51 why not just give it to him instead. The handles are a little bit different you
06:54 can see like for example the axe is a slightly lighter more bleached wood that
06:57 they've used where it's a little bit more darker for the sledge. The sledge
07:00 hammer on the top there is a little bit darker of a color nicely painted there
07:03 but my go-to my favorite of all the things that come in clue with John
07:06 Carver is by far the axe. Really like the way that that looks and it's something
07:10 again so iconic about the way we see that in the trailer where he's just
07:13 swinging the axe back and forth. Definitely gonna be displaying the
07:15 figure with that. The figure also comes in clue with a couple of swapped out face
07:19 plates too. They sort of took a page from the ghost face the New York Comic Con
07:23 ghost face that we also had a look at where instead of just worrying about
07:26 having to pop a head off every single time it's actually instead just a face
07:30 plate that you remove instead and you change it out with the ones that we have
07:33 right here. Just before doing that though I did want to pick the figure up and
07:36 show you guys what he looks like up close and personal. If you haven't yet
07:38 seen Eli Roth's Thanksgiving you definitely have to check it out. It's
07:42 maybe not as I would say gruesome as what's first initially depicted in the
07:46 trailer that we see for the grindhouse but it's definitely a classic already. I
07:50 mean it's one that I could certainly see myself watching every single year. I'm
07:53 super excited for the fact that Eli Roth has already announced that he's gonna be
07:55 doing a Thanksgiving too. I have just an entire franchise of these. Also kudos to
08:00 as a side note to NECA for jumping on this license right away and releasing
08:04 not only an ultimate figure that we're looking at in this review a retro cloth
08:07 figure where we will eventually be looking at because we already know the
08:09 story behind that. There's also a Toonie Terrence release and I think as also as
08:13 well there's the stuffed turkey. Looking forward to getting that one as well but
08:16 overall like it's a nice-looking John Carver. Again it's utilizing mostly just
08:20 the same body as Michael Myers. It's also using somewhat somewhat the same
08:24 body as well that was used for the miner. So like you can see like the arms are
08:27 gonna be the same. It's got that little wrinkle that sticks out on the bicep
08:30 that's also carried over there as well. The lower sleeve is also the shared the
08:34 same. Like the moment I saw this guy online or the moment I saw in the
08:37 trailer I thought okay if NECA is gonna do a figure of this they're probably
08:40 just gonna use the coveralls from Michael Myers or you know again from the
08:43 miner and that's certainly what they did. Michael granted does have the
08:46 popped collar so Carver doesn't have that. His collar is folded down but the
08:50 thing that you can always kind of point out right away of them using the same
08:53 mold is that little crescent shape that he has. See a little crease that he has
08:56 in the pocket is also something that John has there as well. So they would
09:00 have not put in like the little bullet holes. They obviously would have folded
09:03 down the collar but I mean like looking at the bodies they are exactly the same.
09:05 They're also using the same similar body to as well the miner. The only thing
09:09 that's different the only thing that you can see is different is that the lower
09:12 legs if you're looking at them Michael has sort of like this cross shape at the
09:17 bottom where actually if you look at John's, John's actually got a little bit
09:21 of a tucked in wrinkle there on the side so it looks like they're using a
09:24 different lower leg and obviously they would too as well because they're using
09:26 different feet. I mean Carver kind of where it walks around kind of more in
09:30 like hiking shoes where Michael Myers would have had like the military boots.
09:33 So again a little bit different there. One thing that's also really interesting
09:37 about John Carver involves the mask. Now obviously we see this mask for the
09:40 majority of the movie. This is one of those things that everybody in the town
09:43 can get access to a John Carver mask. So it's one of those things you never
09:47 really quite know who the person actually is. I really like the way that
09:50 this guy's been done in the figure. The only thing I would say is I do feel like
09:53 the Pilgrim's Hat is maybe a little too tall. I think in the movie it's only
09:57 about like that high. I don't think it's as tall as it's depicted here. It's got
10:01 the little buckle there on the front. That's one of the things of course he
10:04 has in the movie but just an just an awesome looking mask. I just love the
10:07 look of this mask. I'd love eventually to get my hands on the John Carver mask. I
10:10 think Trick-or-Treat Studios has one available right now over on their site.
10:13 The whole back of the mask actually is all black like it would be in the movie.
10:16 The thing that's interesting about this is that Carver comes included with some
10:20 also alternate head sculpts, also alternate face sculpts as you're not
10:24 replacing the entire head. You're only really replacing the face. This one face
10:28 does have the blood splatter across the front of it. Other than that though it's
10:31 exactly the same. The thing that is different though if you've seen the
10:34 movie is that he leaves a mask sitting on the oven. Now thinking that this is a
10:38 plastic mask, I think it probably should have melted a lot more than what we
10:41 actually get. And you know I was a little bit disappointed too seeing the movie
10:44 that he didn't just wear this mask for the majority of the movie once he picks
10:47 that mask off. So again it's got a little bit more of a melted look to the front
10:51 of the face. I think it's just a it's a creepier looking mask but I guess they
10:54 just want to go with more of a generic mask here. Really neat looking design
10:58 though. What's interesting though about this guy is that you have to remove in
11:02 order to change all the faces by the way you have to remove the top first of all
11:05 of his hat. This is just a case of just removing it. It's fairly soft plastic.
11:09 You just put that off to the side and then he has this piece which you know
11:13 for again like if you're gonna have the figure displayed without the hat it's a
11:16 fully realized head. It doesn't look like it's unfinished in any way but the
11:20 thing that's really interesting about this guy I'm just gonna put him down
11:23 here for a second and I'm gonna reach off to the side and I'm gonna grab
11:25 myself you know Harry Warden or the miner if you prefer to call him miner
11:28 from My Bloody Valentine. Remember when we looked at this figure he had a
11:31 removable gas mask. I'm gonna remove it right now and there's a reason why I'm
11:35 doing this. Just carefully carefully taking this off. You have to kind of get
11:39 it around this back section of his mask here. There we go. Removing it you can see
11:44 remember underneath there would have been the shocked look. I'm not gonna give
11:46 it away. I'm not gonna give it away for anyone that hasn't seen the original 80s
11:48 My Bloody Valentine. Remember he had the shocked look underneath his face. Okay put
11:52 that guy right there. By the way again like using the same bodies. Picking up
11:56 John Carver though. I'm gonna go remove his face. We're gonna take off the hockey
12:00 mask and funny enough wouldn't you know it it looks to be the case that they're
12:03 using the exact same head underneath. Doesn't bother me. Doesn't bother me at
12:07 all. I mean at least if anything it's a finished face. It's not the case that
12:10 you're just taking off Carver's face and it's just completely blank and void of
12:14 detail but it's funny though that they would have gone back not only used the
12:17 same body as the miner but also used this well the surprise look underneath
12:20 of course he's just wearing like the ski mask underneath that. The only thing
12:23 that's different though is that this one does have a little slot there in between
12:26 his eyes and that's the thing that accommodates then the other masks. See
12:29 with the other masks they also have that little lip of plastic right there so you
12:33 can just take that and you line everything up and you just put it back
12:36 down on his face. It's weird just to kind of be able to take a face like we
12:39 already have that one and be taking a mask and just fitting it over top of his
12:43 face with a slot in the middle of his forehead but again there's this one
12:47 again we're just gonna remove this one and put it put on the bloodied mask. See
12:52 what I mean like even though I really now I'm gonna have two John Carver's in
12:54 my collection I don't mind at all because I'm probably gonna have one with
12:57 the cleaner mask this is the bloodied mask by the way and then the other one
13:01 I'm just gonna have with the melted face which I was it I was again thought that
13:04 that was a cool mask I really wish he could have used that for them for the
13:06 rest of the movie let's just move the miner out of the way and then from there
13:09 of course you're just gonna take yourself the pilgrims hat we'll just put
13:12 that back over top it's just such a cooler looking face sculpt with now the
13:15 melted face adds a little bit of additional coloring there also as well
13:19 as for the rest of the body obviously other than just the gloves being a little
13:23 bit different and the boots being one thing that's really different between
13:26 them yeah using a lot of the same body except for really again like the lower
13:29 half I'm gonna also bring back the minor because I also want to show you the
13:33 minor isn't also using the same lower legs obviously the boots are gonna be
13:36 different but if you're looking also the calf section Carver's using a completely
13:39 different sculpting from like the knee down let's just move them back over there
13:44 now for the figures articulation if you already have both Michael Myers and the
13:47 minor you already know by now what kind of articulation we're dealing with so
13:50 the heads gonna be on a bouldering the only thing about it though is it's kind
13:53 of really hard to know where you're gonna be holding on to I mean you can
13:55 hold it from the side you can hold it from the front of the face but the face
13:58 either way though moves back and forth you can move it up and move it down
14:01 there's not really a lot of movement going on here and a lot of times that I
14:04 have done this when I move when I lift it up sometimes I end up popping the
14:08 face plate off in the process as for the arms the arms come out I wouldn't say it
14:12 90 degrees a little less than 90 about 45 degrees but they at least rotate all
14:15 the way around that's the same on this side as well figure does have a double
14:19 hinge on the elbow the hands also as well rotate all the way around and this
14:22 is by the way soft plastic but you can kind of feel that underneath all this
14:26 there's something working behind the scenes there seems to be a ball joint at
14:29 the top of his torso legs once again split there on ratcheted joints you can
14:32 take the legs move them forward move them back there's a swivel at the top of
14:35 the thigh single hinge in the knee and then again you've got that articulation
14:39 back and forth on the ankle and there's a nice ankle rocker - did we already
14:42 mention the fact he is using different footwear than both the minor and Michael
14:45 Myers there it is right there a little bit shinier of a plastic as well same
14:49 similar kind of sheen that they've also given him well when it comes to his
14:52 gloves and again like let's grab let's grab one of his weapons here just kind
14:57 of wrap things up here grab my favorite of the things that he comes in clear
14:59 with is the axe now this axe granted I probably should really change out the
15:03 hands what's a good handed what's a really good hand to use I guess probably
15:06 one of these hands just to remove the hand we're just gonna pop it off from
15:09 the provided form just a case of wiggling it back and forth there we go
15:12 pop that off and replace it with one that's a little bit better suited for
15:16 carrying around the axe if you're having any difficult time as we're kind of
15:19 wrapping up things right now but to close shop for the night also you can
15:22 always go the route of heating the plastic with hot water and that's always
15:25 a good way to kind of prevent obviously pegs from breaking I want to have pegs
15:29 ever breaking on your figure let's slide the axe in place yeah that was so cool
15:33 finally happy finally happy not only the fact that Thanksgiving was an amazing
15:37 movie I can't wait for the sequel to come out but the fact that we finally
15:40 get ourselves a John Carver figure admittingly it sort of falls the terrain
15:44 of what we expected was gonna happen NECA ultimately just took a figure let's
15:48 just go ahead put the miners helmet back on here carefully carefully don't want
15:51 to be breaking the miners helmet there we go I mean essentially knowing that
15:55 John Carver was gonna be wearing coveralls in the movie the logical idea
15:59 would be that if NECA was to release an ultimate figure of him that they would
16:02 just take sort of the cues from characters on either side of him and
16:05 just release in fact the same old and they have other than again like the
16:08 lower knees being a little bit different from the other two figures on either
16:11 side of him John Carver is a welcomed holiday slasher not only for Thanksgiving
16:16 is one I'm now gonna watch every single year but now also an included figure
16:19 that can have on display with both Michael Myers and the minor two other
16:23 slashers that live live about the holiday theme I mean obviously as much
16:27 as you'd be worried about Valentine's Day now being with the minor but you
16:31 know Harry Ward and people stalking that the mines and killing people in the
16:35 process you also have to know I'll worry about Halloween and Michael Myers
16:37 stalking the streets of Haddonfield now you got to be worrying about
16:41 Thanksgiving I mean I obviously NECA toys has done a really great job on this
16:45 release I'm you know again a little disappointed the fact that I ordered
16:48 this guy online and and even at the time of doing this video the guy is still
16:51 being shipped to me I mean again I just know that if next time I probably will
16:55 maybe place the orders separately maybe putting the the figures in individually
16:59 so that if any of those do end up getting in stock and again not faulting
17:02 NECA toys at all I don't mind the fact that they did want to save the shipping
17:05 costs a lot of companies do that a lot of companies do but it just meant that
17:08 at least from a reviewing standpoint I just couldn't get the review up right
17:11 away couldn't wait it couldn't wait any longer so I end up ordering him online
17:14 and just ultimately through all of that all my long-winded story as long as it
17:18 may have been I'm so sorry for that it just ultimately will mean I'll have
17:21 another Carver in my collection and then again based on what we're seeing right
17:24 here that's not a bad thing at all you think it'd be hard to be a figure
17:28 company like NECA banking on unestablished IPs that's intellectual
17:32 properties because while unfortunately the merchandise may look really good if
17:35 it's based on an IP that bombs the likelihood of collectors then wanting
17:39 to source out these figures will be quite low I mean look at for example Rob
17:42 zombies monsters don't actually look at it I wouldn't really even recommend
17:46 watching the movie unless you're a diehard monsters fan I was a big
17:49 monsters fan and yet I hated the Rob zombie movie and yet NECA did produce
17:53 some pretty decent ultimate figures of Lily grandpa and Herman I already picked
17:57 up grandpa I haven't yet to actually pick up Lily or Herman but even though
18:00 we don't have original classic monster characters these will be good stand-ins
18:04 for at least right now NECA did their job of doing pretty good looking figures
18:08 unfortunately though the IP just sort of went belly-up luckily though at least
18:13 they banked on someone like Eli Roth Eli Roth I mean it's safe to assume that if
18:17 you love gore and horror films Eli Roth is kind of the guy you want to go to and
18:20 him now producing Thanksgiving based on originally a teaser trailer that we saw
18:24 at the beginning of a grindhouse film now we're getting a fully filmed
18:28 treatment and boy was Thanksgiving a fun treat if you haven't had a chance yet to
18:32 watch Thanksgiving I mean it's a it's a pretty gorier version of scream but you
18:37 definitely will have a great time watching and I love the fact that we now
18:39 finally are gonna be getting we were it's been announced already we're
18:42 getting a Thanksgiving - and just to think that neck was at the ground level
18:45 producing these figures John Carver is getting already we've already seen in
18:49 this review the ultimate treatment he's getting a retro cloth release that's
18:52 being shipped as we speak also doing a to knee tears and they're doing a couple
18:56 I think they're also doing a stuffed turkey like to get my hands on all of
18:59 those from a figure standpoint obviously it's also a safer bet to produce a John
19:04 Carver because a lot of the molds for example they already have them they had
19:07 them with Michael Myers they had them with the minor it's a very simple thing
19:11 for them to tool a lot less things like really all they really needed to do was
19:14 the mask the hat and then whatever accessories and of course the shoes and
19:17 the gloves that's an easier bet for them to bank on rather than having to tool
