The documentary traces the band from humble family beginnings and features never-before-seen footage and all-new interviews with The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, plus other luminaries in the music business, including Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and Don Was.

00:15 They were participating in the creation of a California dream.
00:19 Man, they made me want to go to where they had cars and girls in bikinis.
00:28 And son, their music takes you someplace.
00:33 There's definitely been ups and downs.
00:36 We've probably been counted out half a dozen times.
00:39 We used to sing three-part harmony in the backseat of the car.
00:43 And that's the birth of the brothers singing together.
00:45 Three brothers, Brian, Dennis, and Carl.
00:50 A cousin, Mike Love, and our good friend, Al Jardine.
00:53 That's family to me.
00:55 We've known each other for a really long time, and there really is a great deal of fellowship in the group.
00:59 And we've been through an awful lot.

01:18 That's when we started realizing there's some genius here.
01:21 But his dad began to be an obstacle.

01:26 My Uncle Murray sold to the publishing.
01:29 And Brian went, "You sold my songs?"
01:32 Brian put together textures that no one had ever put into popular songs before.
