00:00 Yes folks, it's that time of year again, the Manila International Auto Show.
00:05 And for the first time ever, it's being held at two venues, here at the World Trade Center
00:10 and at the SMX Convention Center.
00:12 Of course, like any other MIAs, we're going to be covering some of the all-new car launches
00:17 along with some highlights along the way.
00:20 So without further ado, join us Top Gear Philippines as we cover this year's Manila International
00:26 Auto Show.

01:17 BAYEK is staging a Philippine comeback and staging their comeback includes the introduction
01:23 of five new models consisting of crossovers and SUVs.
01:27 Now we're going to start with the entry-level model, this, the X55 VIRB.
01:32 And it competes with the likes of the Honda HR-V and Hyundai Creta, Toyota Yaris Cross
01:37 and the like.
01:38 So this one competes in the highly competitive subcompact crossover market.
01:43 Now we're going to move on to the car one size bigger than this, the X70 VIRB.
01:49 Now up next we have this, the X7 Grandeza.
01:53 Now the Grandeza competes in the compact crossover class, one size class higher than the X55.
01:59 So the primary competitors of this at least in terms of size is the Honda CR-V, Toyota
02:03 RAV4, Subaru Forester, you know the usual suspects in that segment.
02:07 But this one uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine just like most Chinese crossovers these days
02:13 and it's shared also with the X55.
02:16 But for those looking for something that can go off-road, we're going to move on to the
02:19 next BAYEK product.
02:21 Now this SUV beside me is the V60 Beaumont.
02:24 Now yes it looks massive and it's not just because I'm vertically challenged.
02:29 Now this one competes in the class of sort of the Fortuners, the Everest, the Montero
02:33 Sports but looking at it in person, it's actually quite larger than those SUVs.
02:39 And BAYEK really took to heart the market that it's competing in because unlike most
02:43 Chinese SUVs, this has a diesel engine.
02:47 Something very important in this segment.
02:49 Now the top of the BAYEK range is this, the B80 Wagon and we already know what you're
02:54 thinking, save it for the comments.
02:56 This being the flagship model, it retails for over Php 4,000,000 and it's got a twin-turbo
03:00 V6 under the hood with about 270 horsepower.
03:04 When you step inside, there's acres of leather which is what you'd expect from a luxury vehicle.
03:09 So if you're looking for a budget VIP SUV of sorts, well this might just fit the bill
03:14 for you.
03:15 Anyway, that's the BAYEK range in a nutshell.
03:17 It's time to move on to the next boost.
03:19 Now if you're on the market for a slightly higher up MPV, that's sort of the subcompact
03:25 category, well you have this from Suzuki, the XL7 Hybrid.
03:29 Now it may not be a full hybrid system but the 48V system in this might help you save
03:34 a few liters at the pumps.
03:35 Now mechanically, it's mostly unchanged, save for the belt start generator that's attached
03:40 to the engine.
03:41 But that being said, it also features all of the hallmarks of the standard of the model.
03:46 So it's still practical, still spacious, and it can save you a little bit more gas in the
03:50 long run.
03:52 In this year's MIA, Subaru went all out when it comes to special editions.
03:57 Now for the Forester, they're introducing a variant called the Wild Edition.
04:01 So basically it gets a two-tone look, it's got a matte black hood, and you know it's
04:05 got different wheels, all-terrain tires, and strangely enough, a body kit.
04:09 I'm not sure how that'll fare off-road but here we are.
04:13 Now up next is this one, the WRX GT Edition.
04:16 Now essentially it's a unique version of the WRX, at least for Southeast Asia, and it
04:22 gets a different set of body kits to go along with it.
04:26 Now for the BRZ, yes they also made a special edition for it, or rather it is a concept
04:33 for now at least.
04:34 Now it is the STi Sport.
04:38 So this of course is available in Japan as well, so it gets a different front lip, STi
04:44 wheels which you would assume are lighter, some more STi tidbits down here, and of course
04:50 you're not gonna miss the huge wing over at the back.
04:53 But if the BRZ is a little too compromised for you, there is the Crosstrek GT Edition.
05:00 Now again it's a bit like the WRX GT Edition, you know different body kit, although the
05:05 Crosstrek comes with a unique set of alloy wheels exclusive for this market only.
05:12 By this market I mean Southeast Asia.
05:14 But the highlight of the Subaru booth is a return of a certain badge, the XT.
05:20 And this time around they've attached it to the Outback.
05:22 So yes, the Outback XT brings back the turbocharged crossover to the Subaru lineup.
05:29 So it's got a 2.4-liter engine, over 250 horsepower, and about 350 Newton-meters of torque.
05:36 And we say it would make a perfect dad car.
05:40 Now the Japanese and the Americans might have a stronghold in the midsize pickup market,
05:44 but the Chinese also want to muscle in in that territory.
05:48 And JMC has this, the Grand Avenue.
05:51 Now it's available in either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive guises, manual or automatic
05:56 transmission.
05:57 But something that caught our attention, aside from the design, are the rear brakes.
06:01 See, most pickups come with drums at the back, but not this one.
06:05 Even the two-wheel drive version comes with rear disc brakes.
06:09 And the interior, well it looks rather promising.
06:11 And this is something we're rather curious with, and we're actually looking forward to
06:14 trying this out in the real world to see just how it fares with the establishment.
06:20 Now we're also going to cover yet another new Chinese brand here at MIA's.
06:24 By now you're probably spotting a theme by now, but this time around it is a Swedish-Chinese
06:29 collaboration from Geely and Volvo.
06:32 That brand is none other than Link and Co, and they brought a whole barrage of cars to
06:36 this year's MIA's.
06:38 Now right behind me is none available in the Philippines, maybe just yet.
06:43 Now this is the 03 Plus, and it's their performance sedan.
06:46 And Link and Co is aiming very high with this sedan because it's sort of comparable to something
06:52 like a BMW 3 Series, or an Audi A4, or a Mercedes C-Class, or even the Lexus IS.
06:57 So it remains to be seen if this will be sold in the Philippines, but let's go elsewhere
07:01 and take a look at the cars that are actually available here by now.
07:06 Now the one with a huge crowd over there is the Link and Co 01, and it is their flagship
07:13 crossover.
07:14 Right now you can't really see much of it because there's a lot of people in front of
07:18 it.
07:19 But anyway, it is a plug-in hybrid crossover, a C-segment crossover to be exact, and the
07:24 numbers are pretty promising.
07:25 So you're looking at over 250 horsepower and more than 350 Nm of torque.
07:30 It's also got all-wheel drive, and the best part is it is a plug-in hybrid.
07:34 So that should help you save a little bit at the pumps.
07:38 Now another model of interest is the Link and Co 05.
07:43 Now what is the 05, you're probably wondering.
07:45 It is a bit of a coupe crossover, so I mean you get the same front end as the 01, but
07:52 once you go to the B-pillar and back, it looks pretty sleek and rakish.
07:57 So for those looking for a coupe crossover, maybe that's something you could consider.
08:02 But let's say you want something a little bit in the entry-level market, a subcompact
08:06 crossover.
08:07 Well Link and Co has that covered as well with the 06 model.
08:12 Now the 06 is actually a very close relative of yet another GV product you're probably
08:17 familiar with by now, the GV Coolray.
08:20 They share the same architecture and the same mechanical bits, particularly the engine.
08:25 It even has the same 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine, and exactly the same power and
08:30 torque gratings to go along with it.
08:32 The difference is, well, this one has more tech and a little bit of flair when it comes
08:37 to styling.
08:38 It's definitely unique and a bit of a love-hate thing.
08:40 But one thing you can't say about Link and Co is, well, they're bland-looking.
08:45 Because just look at their cars, they're pretty offbeat and out there when it comes to styling.
08:50 Hyundai, the purveyors of very practical and comfortable crossovers and vans, as well as
08:56 race cars.
08:57 Now, this here isn't just some tarted-up Elantra.
09:00 In fact, this is the actual TCR race car that competed in the World Touring Car Championship,
09:06 and it was driven by...
09:08 I have no idea who that guy is.
09:10 But I do know who the champion was, and that was Norbert Michalis.
09:13 So why did Hyundai display this Elantra?
09:16 And, well, that's because they also rolled out the road-going version here at the World
09:22 Trade Center.
09:24 And yes, this is the real deal, and yes, you can buy it now.
09:28 How much, you ask?
09:29 Well, for less than P3M, you have about 300 horsepower, or almost 300 horsepower.
09:35 So when it comes to performance bargains, well, that's a pretty solid deal.
09:39 And also, it's a sedan, so it might actually pass as a family car at some point.
09:44 But if you want to go even faster, we're going to have to look over there, because that is
09:50 the Hyundai IONIQ 5N.
09:52 Now, by the time you're watching this, well, we're kind of in the middle of doing something
09:57 about the IONIQ 5N.
09:58 But I can tell you that I have driven it already, and it is the least intimidating way to have
10:06 600 horsepower.
10:07 The chassis was brilliant, the acceleration was amazing and whatnot, and because it's
10:12 a crossover, it's also immensely practical.
10:14 So there's a lot of good stuff about the IONIQ 5N going on, and you can have that one for
10:19 about P4.2M.
10:22 That perhaps is the most affordable way to get 600 horsepower.
10:26 Now, JWM seems to have a very diverse product portfolio.
10:30 Now, on one hand, you have products like this, the Tank, an off-roader of sorts, and then
10:36 you have crossovers such as the H6 and the Jolion.
10:39 Now, at the same time, they also offer a subcompact electric vehicle simply called the Aura.
10:46 So it's interesting to see what JWM has done here.
10:49 So instead of just focusing on one sort of vehicle, there's sort of more options to go
10:53 about.
10:54 So let's say you step inside one of their showrooms and see what you like, well, you
10:58 can also explore other options.
11:00 So that's a very interesting strategy that Great Wall did.
11:03 And all these models are on display here at the Manila International Auto Show.
11:08 And here we have yet another newcomer in the form of JAC.
11:12 And it's all part of the Astara conglomerate that also handles GAC and JMC.
11:19 So yeah, that's a lot of J's and C's and A's along the way.
11:22 But anyway, JAC specializes more on crossovers and pickup trucks.
11:27 So what we have here is their flagship model, the T9.
11:30 Now, of course, they have other models as well, such as the JS8, the JS6, and the JS4.
11:37 Now, of course, the number corresponds to their size, but we reckon it's this one that
11:42 might attract a lot of sales because let's face it, Filipinos just love their pickup
11:46 trucks.
11:47 Now, this futuristic looking crossover beside me is the Cherry EQ7.
11:52 Yes, folks, this is a Cherry product.
11:56 And as you can see, I'm standing beside a charger, which means this is a pure electric
12:01 vehicle.
12:02 But that's not the only crossover that Cherry brought here at MIAS 2024.
12:07 On that side is a rather familiar looking face.
12:10 Now, it may look like a Tigo 7, but you're probably going to notice something different
12:16 around the front bumper.
12:17 Now, there's a reason for that because this Tigo 7 is actually a plug-in hybrid model.
12:23 Now, it's coming soon to the Philippines with indicative pricing ranging from 1.7 million
12:29 to a little under 2 million pesos.
12:31 So this might be a game changer in its segment if that pushes through.
12:36 Now, of course, it's no surprise that Mitsubishi is celebrating their Triton model here at
12:41 MIAS.
12:42 So there are a variety of variants here on display, so from the Athlete to this, the
12:47 GLS.
12:48 And if you've noticed, it's actually on AT wheels or all-terrain tires.
12:52 Now, the Triton isn't the only one on display here because Mitsubishi also collaborated
12:57 with Overland Kings to outfit their Montero Sport.
13:01 And that's not just a 4x4, okay?
13:04 That's actually a legit GT 4x4.
13:06 So basically, it just shows you the possibilities that you can do with the Montero Sport.
13:12 And the same goes for the Expander.
13:14 But of course, somewhere over there is the Rally Truck.
13:19 Okay, it's not the actual model just yet.
13:21 It's a replica that also shows the new livery of the Triton.
13:25 Now, that's because Mitsubishi is joining the Asia Cross Country Rally again next year,
13:31 and they are aiming to beat Toyota at their own game after they were dethroned last year.
13:36 So it'll be interesting to see how the Hilux and the Triton will fight next year given
13:41 that the Triton already has a few miles under its belt.
13:45 By the time you've seen this, you've seen the Chang'e CS-15 right on display at the
13:49 Manila International Auto Show.
13:51 But before it made its public launch, we were able to get this right beforehand.
13:58 And there are a couple of things that are very interesting about this car.
14:01 Now, the subcompact crossover market has been becoming very crowded lately, especially in
14:06 the sub-1 million peso price range.
14:09 So how is this thing going to stand out?
14:11 Well, the CS-15 aims to do that with a very lucrative price.
14:16 And yes, we're going to discuss price first.
14:19 It starts at Php 799,000.
14:23 And if you buy one now, it's Php 50,000 off.
14:25 So it's Php 749,000.
14:29 Now you're probably wondering, okay, at that price, I'm probably expecting just a couple
14:33 of seats and the steering wheel and nothing much inside.
14:36 But that's where Chang'e wants to differentiate itself among its competitors when you step
14:41 inside.
14:42 So to paraphrase that Cornetto commercial, where did you get your Php 799,000?
14:48 Well inside, it's actually a pretty good looking cabin if I'm going to be honest about it.
14:53 I mean, yes, it's hard plastics everywhere, but come on guys, it's less than a million
14:57 pesos.
14:58 It's less than Php 800,000.
15:00 And with that, you can get a touchscreen.
15:03 It's got mobile phone connectivity.
15:05 You get cruise control, you get steering wheel audio controls as well to go along with it.
15:10 You've got power adjustable things here and even a headlight leveler.
15:14 But for those considering one as a family car, you'd have that extra peace of mind
15:18 thanks to standard stability control among other things.
15:23 And also this is just one variant, but it already comes with leather seats and a leather
15:28 steering wheel.
15:29 Okay, a leatherette, but come on guys, who can find genuine leather in this price range?
15:33 For the steering wheel adjustment, well it tilts.
15:36 It doesn't telescope, but that's totally fine.
15:38 That's totally a given in this price range.
15:41 So all in all, looking at it, well not bad for Php 799,000 and you even get a sunroof.
15:48 So how do you say luxury in Mandarin?
15:50 Well, apparently it's Hongqi.
15:52 Well, okay, that's not the literal meaning, but rather Hongqi is the longest-running Chinese
15:57 brand ever there.
15:59 And they're also the main provider of the presidential cars as well.
16:02 So over here, they just launched this, the HS3.
16:06 It is a subcompact crossover with a 1.5-liter turbo engine.
16:09 And of course, there are other highlights here at the Hongqi booth.
16:13 They have an electric sedan along with an executive saloon of dying breed these days,
16:18 and of course, a luxury van.
16:20 Of course, there's no shortage of electric vehicles here at Hongqi, and a popular model
16:26 has been the EHS9, their flagship model.
16:29 The middle of the Hongqi lineup is the HS5, and so far all of them have been actually
16:35 doing pretty well, especially the flagship model, surprisingly.
16:39 How big do you want your pickup?
16:41 Well, if you're looking at Photon's range, you have this, the Tunland V9.
16:46 And this is not an exaggeration.
16:49 This is how big it actually is.
16:51 So something interesting about this, it's actually a diesel hybrid.
16:54 Now you're probably wondering why no one's thought of that before.
16:57 Well, it's actually been produced before, but no one's really made it super mainstream.
17:02 But in the case of the Tunland V9, well, that's what Photon is trying to do in this case.
17:08 So it's going to be an interesting combination.
17:10 So you have the efficiency of a diesel and the aid of electrification.
17:13 So okay, so it's a huge pickup, obviously, and we're curious to see its fuel economy
17:19 because it's a heavy vehicle at the end of the day.
17:23 But if it can do, let's say, 15-16 kilometers per liter in the city, then that's a very
17:28 strong result for this.
17:30 Now the V9 isn't the only truck that Photon launched today.
17:34 There's also the smaller V7, still a massive truck, but slightly smaller than this behemoth.
17:42 Now MG had quite the surprise here at the Manila International Auto Show by launching
17:47 a whole load of new cars here today.
17:50 So we're going to go by them one by one.
17:52 We're going to start off with what's possibly going to be the mainstream model, the MG3.
17:57 The MG3 is a subcompact hatchback, something a bit of a dying breed these days.
18:01 It's a little different this time because it comes standard with a hybrid engine.
18:06 So we're looking forward to trying that out along with this one, the MG7, another bit
18:12 of a dying breed segment, the mid-size executive sedan.
18:16 But of course, we love crossovers here in this country and SUVs, so they also offer
18:23 the RX9.
18:25 That's an other all-new model right from MG.
18:29 If you're looking for something even more practical and you're not really into SUVs,
18:34 they also have a van.
18:35 Finally, MG has a van called the G50.
18:40 So they're all here in this side of the Manila International Auto Show in SMX.
18:45 So other highlights here, of course, you have the Cyberster Roadster, the MG4 X-Power, and
18:53 a new electric crossover that's just somewhere over there.
19:01 There's a lot of newcomers here, obviously, and one of them is Ceres.
19:04 Now Ceres offers three crossovers in their lineup, and it starts off with the 5.
19:11 Now this particular 5 is a series hybrid, so it's got a range extender, and okay, just
19:18 to simplify it, think of it sort of like a Nissan Kicks e-power system.
19:23 So this one on the other hand, it's still a 5 model, but this is a plug-in hybrid.
19:30 Now moving over there, you have the internal combustion engine models, the regular Ceres
19:36 5, and the larger Ceres 7.
19:40 So the Ceres 5 competes in the compact market, while the 7 competes in the larger midsize
19:45 segment.
19:46 You're probably wondering by this time, how many more new brands do we have to cover?
19:51 Well, we have this other one, Haikon.
19:55 Now Haikon locally will offer three models in the country, the AO6+ midsize sedan, the
20:01 Z03 compact, and the V09 luxury van.
20:06 Now you seem to notice that the Chinese market loves their luxury vans, and there's no shortage
20:11 of them in Miya's at all.
20:13 If anything, almost every Chinese automaker booth we visited had some sort of variation
20:18 of a luxury people mover.
20:21 Interesting.
20:22 Now some of you may have heard of Omoda and J.Coo already, but it took sort of a while
20:27 before it actually landed in the Philippines.
20:29 But now they're here making their first public appearance at MIAS 2024.
20:34 And they're bringing in both brands, and their both brands are under Cherry.
20:38 So Omoda is sort of a youth-oriented brand, while J.Coo focuses more on a slightly more
20:44 rugged market with their boxier SUVs and whatnot.
20:49 So that's J.Coo and Omoda, two brands here in one booth.
20:54 And that wraps up our coverage of the 2024 Manila International Auto Show.
20:58 It's been a long day, lots of new brands, lots of new cars, and a whole host of activities.
21:04 So we hope you enjoyed this episode of Top Gear Philippines, and we hope to see you next
21:08 here at the Motor Show.
21:10 Let's go.
21:10 Bye.
21:11 Bye.
21:11 Bye.
21:12 Bye.
21:12 Bye.
21:13 Bye.
21:13 Bye.
