00:00 Out of the eight fatalities that we've seen, these are lives lost from our community.
00:04 Three of those occurred in the metropolitan area and five of those occurred in regional New South Wales.
00:09 When you look at the demographics, we had three motorcycle riders lose their lives,
00:15 two riders and passengers in all-terrain vehicles,
00:20 we had a pedestrian lose his life and we had two incidents involving motor vehicles.
00:26 In each one of these incidents, the offending driver is responsible.
00:31 It's tragic for the families and my heart generally goes out to these families that are coming to terms with this loss.
00:37 There were over 232,000 breath tests for alcohol and we identified 295 drivers that are over the limit.
00:44 We did over 17,000 drug tests, but 863 positive indicators for illicit drugs in their system.
00:52 These are, and I emphasise this, these are the contributing factors to the loss of lives on our road.
00:57 The police that worked tirelessly over the weekend were engaged in a whole series of sliding doors moments
01:03 where they were actually able to stop, engage with and take offending drivers off the road
01:08 before they caused harm to somebody else.
01:11 I'm very thankful that what I've seen reported to me over the weekend,
01:16 I'm very thankful that the road toll wasn't far higher.
