00:00 You know exactly what I expect, a clean championship fight, obey my commands and protect yourself at all times.
00:08 Touch gloves, good luck to both of you.
00:10 Liam Wilson made no bones about it. I know I'm in Oscar Valdez's hometown.
00:17 I know that he is the favorite. I have to knock him out to win.
00:23 And sometimes you have to change the chip coming into the most important fight of your life, Ken.
00:29 It's important for him to set the tone and set the tone early on Oscar Valdez.
00:34 And it's all gonna be about controlling distance and range, which he does very, very well for Liam Wilson.
00:41 Three Australians fighting for world titles this weekend.
00:45 Liam Wilson is the first to go.
00:49 And you hear the crowd chanting Oscar Valdez's name.
00:55 We talked about the emotions, Tim, and Yocasta Valle and Zanissa having to rein that in.
01:01 When you're fighting at home, there's also a desire to show out, especially after the way the last fight ended for Valdez.
01:08 Yeah, I mean, that's been Valdez's Achilles heel.
01:11 A lot of times he doesn't use his brain, he uses his heart to fight.
01:16 And he ends up in situations to where, you know, he's taking more risks than he needs to take.
01:23 So he's gonna have to be cautious tonight.
01:26 Wilson can punch, and right out the gate you can see how cautious, and you can see the defense of Oscar Valdez.
01:32 That's not a good thing early on for Valdez.
01:35 Valdez is gonna have to get off to a quick start, and show him who's the boss.
01:39 I have the experience.
01:41 Land some significant punches early to try to detour the young bull.
01:44 Look who's sitting ringside.
01:46 Eric "El Terrible" Morales.
01:49 Just off camera, above the judge who was the referee last time that Liam Wilson was in the ring.
01:57 Had that long count for Emmanuel Laverrette.
02:00 That's Chris Flores there.
02:02 You're starting to see the swelling already on Valdez.
02:06 You see the redness around the right eye.
02:08 Ooh, left hook right there from Wilson.
02:10 Turn it over.
02:11 Wilson is easy.
02:12 He'll pawl with that lead hand, and he'll get you to commit.
02:16 He'll just stay right outside of mid-range to outside, and he will step back and he'll catch you as you're coming in.
02:25 You'll remember that the hand that actually dropped Laverrette was too overhand right,
02:30 so you're so preoccupied with Wilson's long, tip-left hook that he lands there to the body of Valdez,
02:37 and sometimes you overlook his power right.
02:40 What I'm not overlooking is the uppercuts that Liam Wilson has added to his craft.
02:45 The plan is to catch Valdez when he's in that crouched position.
02:49 He's got to be careful, and he possesses a nice straight right hand, too.
02:52 He'll change it up.
02:55 Nice body shot there from Valdez.
02:57 That's where Valdez needs to live.
02:59 He needs to live on the inside.
03:00 Williams is not very comfortable on the inside.
03:02 Yes, he will fire back, but that's not his strong suit.
03:05 His strong suit is from outside to mid-range.
03:10 Stop. Don't punch. Be careful.
03:12 That's a nice advantage for Liam Wilson, so that's why the importance of Valdez to get inside
03:18 as Wilson continues to control the ring.
03:25 You see the distance control by Wilson as Valdez tries to step in and close distance.
03:29 You see him take a step back and make some falls short.
03:33 Hands free, guys. Obey the bell here.
03:35 Time.
03:37 Let's listen in to Eddie Reynoso as Oscar Valdez comes over for instructions.
03:43 Take a deep breath.
03:53 How do you feel? Good.
03:55 All right, relax. Take a deep breath.
03:59 You need to be alert.
04:01 You're short. You're falling short with your left, and he's trying to counter you with your right.
04:06 Make sure you block it.
04:09 Don't throw so much right now.
04:11 Just block and then land quick uppercuts or left hooks.
04:16 He's longer than you.
04:19 Your jab's not going to get there yet, but he's going to come back with a one-two.
04:24 When you step back with your hands up.
04:30 There is a Mexican legend, a hall of famer, class of 2018, Eric "El Terrible" Morales.
04:38 The first man on American soil to beat Manny Pacquiao.
04:43 I have another one sitting next to me, but also a man who was an eighth division champion in Manny Pacquiao.
04:50 He had to go through Eric Morales, a Mexican legend who loved to box, but he really enjoyed fighting.
05:00 You know when Wilson is in control, you want to know how he's in control?
05:04 He has the pressure fighter moving backwards.
05:07 And that's Oscar Valdez.
05:10 The instructions from Wilson were keep touching him.
05:13 It's a 12-round fight.
05:16 And here you see him touching to the body of Valdez.
05:20 Wilson's doing a lot in there. I mean, those uppercuts, small short shots on the inside.
05:23 You see him reach around now to the body, changing things up.
05:27 He has a plan, he's executing it right now.
05:29 Valdez is not doing anything. He's having a hard time closing the distance.
05:32 That's always been Valdez's Achilles heel. Closing distance.
05:37 And the age starts to show, the wars start to show on your face as we're seeing with Oscar Valdez.
05:45 You're not going to be able to catch and shoot Valdez. You got to get closer.
05:50 Liam Wilson is doing well again, mid-range to outside.
05:55 And he's just using his arms, he's using his reach advantage.
05:59 That was a wild left hook. Now you see the blood streaming from the left nostril of Liam Wilson.
06:07 And Wilson, he will switch southpaw as well.
06:10 And I think he'll do that when things are not going well for him.
06:13 If you see Valdez starting to mount an attack and be consistent with his work,
06:18 he will turn to southpaw to change things up.
06:21 Valdez now trying to land that overhand right to counter the left of Liam Wilson.
06:27 I mean, you feel the tension, Tim, as Valdez lands a nice left, now a streaking body shot.
06:34 Range, range, range for both these men is extremely important.
06:38 Right there, that range right there is great for Wilson.
06:41 Valdez, get a little bit closer, that's a perfect range for him.
06:45 But he has to dig down to that body, it's a large frame that Wilson has.
06:50 When you start digging down to that body, you start sucking the life out of him, little by little.
06:56 And this is where Valdez wants to be.
06:59 Yes.
07:00 That was a nice right uppercut from Wilson as Valdez lands a left hook.
07:04 Valdez wants to be there, but he has to be very selective because Wilson, he will react.
07:09 And he will try to counter on the inside with the left hook particularly.
07:13 [crowd noise]
07:22 See, I hate, I can't stand that high guard usage, it's terrible.
07:25 You know, Canelo gets away with it.
07:27 Stop, I got you, step back.
07:28 You know, he's mastered that, that's worked for him, but for Valdez, you become a sitting duck.
07:32 And you give your opponent the initiative.
07:35 Momentum, momentum as well, yes.
07:37 Stop, don't punch, be careful, I got it.
07:40 Oh, here's the bell, guys.
07:41 [bell rings]
07:42 Let's listen in to Liam Wilson who goes back, sporting a bloody nose.
07:46 [crowd noise]
08:09 It's easy from long.
08:10 You don't have to have a tear out, exchange up, or exchange.
08:13 Step off after you touch him.
08:15 Look for this short right hand counter.
08:17 That right uppercut probably not it, it's more of a five on the left side.
08:19 Yeah.
08:20 Okay?
08:21 You're trying to bring it up, bring it up, bring it up, bring the five.
08:24 [crowd noise]
08:36 Liam Wilson returning with his former trainer Ben Harrington back home in Australia after challenging for the world title with Barry Hunter in his corner.
08:46 Said, got nothing but great things to say about Barry, Boogie, and the folks over at Headbangers, but I wanted to go back to my original team.
08:54 See that short left hook there from Valdez to open up round three.
08:58 Yeah, Valdez will start, he'll set that up, that punch up by again, using that jab, coming down the middle.
09:03 And then he'll use the same mechanics as the jab, steps in fully, but he'll change it into a hook to try to surprise his opponents.
09:12 [crowd noise]
09:14 Oh, left hook right there from Liam.
09:16 See at range, what Liam is doing, he's just keeping Valdez occupied defensively when he's just touching, touching, touching.
09:23 Not really throwing a whole lot of power, but he's extending his hands, and he's touching, physically touching Valdez, and keeping him honest.
09:32 [crowd noise]
09:35 Good shots right there from Valdez.
09:37 [crowd noise]
09:39 Valdez is starting to land some heavy shots to the body.
09:42 [crowd noise]
09:45 And he's starting to slowly find his range.
09:47 [crowd noise]
10:00 That is a dangerous place to be for Oscar Valdez, missing wildly with that left hook.
10:04 Yeah, I mean, I don't understand, look.
10:06 I do understand, I mean, Canelo Alvarez throws a ton of hooks, you know, and it's the way he's trained.
10:13 You know, power shot, power shot, power shot.
10:16 However, it'd be nice if he could throw a straight right hand for once in his life, Oscar Valdez.
10:21 [crowd noise]
10:23 'Cause Liam sees those shots coming, and he loads up with everything, every time he throws.
10:28 [crowd noise]
10:30 And he knows he's not going through a good spell right now.
10:32 Nice right uppercut from Wilson.
10:34 And he's gonna land that shot, and he's gonna be there all night, because Oscar Valdez, again,
10:38 he will crouch down right in front, and he'll keep his head right there, as he does there.
10:42 And the uppercut is available for Wilson.
10:45 And he's trying to set up that left hook against Valdez, as he makes himself vulnerable to the right uppercut of Liam Wilson.
10:52 [crowd noise]
10:54 Nice straight right from Wilson, parried partially by Valdez.
10:58 That's a straight jab.
11:00 Good shot right there, Valdez, stepping in.
11:02 [crowd noise]
11:04 Stepping in behind his jab, and really ripping down to the body with his right hand.
11:10 [crowd noise]
11:11 Now the blood emanating from the nose of Wilson more profusely.
11:16 They start to exchange punches.
11:18 [crowd noise]
11:20 And a counter right.
11:21 And a counter.
11:22 [laughs]
11:23 Valdez taking a little bit off of that, a little steam off that punch by rolling his head.
11:27 [crowd noise]
11:28 A good left hook from Wilson.
11:29 A good wave, with that punch. Yes, it was.
11:31 See, Wilson is staying consistent with his work. Valdez, not so much.
11:36 But when Valdez chooses to strike, he doesn't miss often.
11:40 [crowd noise]
11:42 Close third round here.
11:44 [crowd noise]
11:46 From Glenville, Arizona, tonight's main event, Oscar Valdez against Liam Wilson
11:51 for the interim WBO junior lightweight title.
11:55 We have a lot of action coming up in the next few weeks.
11:59 April 13th, we're in Corpus Christi, Texas, for the return of undefeated heavyweight
12:03 Jared Anderson against Briard Murray.
12:07 Then, we go to the Tokyo Dome on May 6th for Naoya Inoue
12:11 defending his undisputed junior featherweight title against Luis "Panterita" Neri.
12:16 Right down the channel, we'll go to Perth, Australia, for George Kambosis
12:20 and Vasily Lomachenko fighting for the vacant IBF lightweight world title.
12:26 And then, we're back home in San Diego, California, for Emmanuel Navarrete
12:30 against Denis Barenchik for the vacant WBO lightweight belt.
12:36 And that will determine what happens with the winner of tonight.
12:40 Will they become the full champion if Navarrete wins that belt and stays at lightweight?
12:45 [crowd noise]
12:48 Your takeaways from the first three rounds so far, Tim?
12:52 Valdez is being patient. I don't know if I like the patience.
12:57 He needs to get after it.
12:59 There he goes.
13:00 And that's where he needs to live. He needs to live right there inside that pocket
13:05 and dig down to that body of Wilson.
13:09 He's got to find a way to slow down the younger Wilson.
13:12 Yes.
13:13 Because Wilson's got a nice right hand as well.
13:18 Wilson just got one hand free and he's just coming up with shots,
13:21 just trying to bruise the face of Valdez.
13:24 That was his plan. That's what he told Mark Krippel he would be doing.
13:27 And you see, look at that right eye, starting to swell up.
13:32 And that quick double hook from Oscar Valdez.
13:35 That's what Valdez, he needs to get a little more consistent with his punches.
13:39 Get your hands free, guys. Get out of there. Get your hands free.
13:42 You saw how grossly inflamed that right eye got against Emmanuel Navarrete.
13:48 So Oscar Valdez trying to avoid that against Liam Wilson,
13:52 who starts to dig to the body here with the left hooks.
13:55 With the uppercut inside.
13:57 See, Liam Wilson is willing to sit right now and he's trying to fight fire with fire.
14:02 That can be a bad thing right now.
14:05 Valdez is kind of forcing him into a fight right now.
14:08 And that's called heart from Liam Wilson.
14:11 He's not using his head.
14:12 His trainer's probably going to say, "Hey, man, get back on the outside,"
14:15 once he goes back to that corner.
14:16 What are you doing?
14:18 I mean, he's bringing Wilson into his fight.
14:21 He's abandoned the distance control. That's a low blow.
14:25 It's all right. It was on the belt, baby. Ready to go?
14:28 And Mark Nelson says, "That was on the belt line."
14:31 Love the way Nelson was able to settle that.
14:33 He was like, "It was on the belt line. Keep it up."
14:36 Yeah. Oscar Valdez says, "Let's dig deep and go for broke."
14:44 See, some fighters, they'll get hit low on the belt line and they'll say, "Oh, it was low."
14:48 Just because it was on the top of the cup doesn't mean it was low.
14:51 And they'll look to buy themselves some time.
14:53 But Nelson, he said, "Nuh-uh. It was on the belt line."
14:57 And now the fight's continuing.
14:59 That's called a sell from the referee.
15:01 Nice double jab from Valdez. Sets up the right.
15:05 See the activity of Valdez?
15:07 That's what he needs. He needs numbers, punches and bunches.
15:10 However, with his age and all the wars he's been in, he's slowed down a bit.
15:16 That number has diminished.
15:18 And it's also the work with Eddie Reynoso.
15:21 They want to make him a defensive fighter who counters and sets up shots like this
15:25 instead of just going out there and going to war.
15:28 Wilson now is fighting Valdez's fight.
15:32 He's giving up his height and he's trying to bang in the inside.
15:35 And he's trying to go punch for punch with Valdez.
15:37 Ooh, that was a nice shot.
15:39 Right in the solar plexus from Valdez.
15:42 Some variation right there from Wilson.
15:46 Fighting inside the inside.
15:48 Wilson with the left hook to the liver.
15:50 Good uppercuts.
15:55 Don't hook with a hooker, but if you have to go downstairs.
15:58 Let's see what his trainer says.
16:01 Take a deep breath. Did he hit you low?
16:06 Hey, if he goes low, you go low.
16:10 Take a deep breath.
16:22 When he's right on top of you, just don't carry him.
16:25 Step laterally. Take a deep breath and recover.
16:29 I'm going to start pressure.
16:31 You're doing well.
16:33 If he starts going crazy, just make him miss and move.
16:38 In the short range, his arms are so long that you can control him.
16:43 But you've got to land those nice uppercuts.
16:46 Up and down. Just hit him on the shoulders.
16:48 Two shots at a time.
16:52 Close your guard.
16:54 I got a tie, but the momentum is with Oscar Valdez.
17:07 The way it started, and by the way,
17:09 Liam Wilson is about 12 pounds bigger, typically bigger.
17:14 But Liam Wilson acted like the bigger, longer fighter for the first two rounds.
17:19 And then Oscar penetrated his defense and landed tougher shots inside.
17:23 So what they're trying to do now is they're trying to wear down Oscar.
17:28 They're trying to make him fight at a pace that he's not comfortable fighting.
17:32 He's the older fighter. They're trying to make him use his legs.
17:35 They're trying to force him back. They're trying to gas him.
17:38 That's the reason why Liam is coming forward.
17:40 He feels that he's younger, he's stronger, he's comfortable inside the pocket.
17:44 And he doesn't feel threatened by the power that's coming from Oscar Valdez.
17:48 Liam said, "Look, Valdez said that Navarrete hits hard. I didn't think Navarrete hit that hard."
17:58 Then why'd he get knocked out?
18:00 He got worn down.
18:02 Yeah, he got stopped, but he didn't get knocked out.
18:04 Punch out of there. Get your hands free.
18:06 The live odds now have started to switch in favor of Valdez.
18:11 Started at -375 on ESPN Bet.
18:14 Now he's at -700 for a +400 move by Wilson.
18:21 There's that jab from Valdez.
18:23 We talked about the experience.
18:26 Valdez now using some athleticism, some good defense right now.
18:31 Making Liam fall short. There's the southpaw.
18:34 So he turns southpaw because he had a hard time finding success.
18:38 But then he turns back orthodox when he didn't see.
18:40 He didn't like that front that Valdez was showing.
18:45 He thought he was setting him up with something because he was long on the ropes and he wouldn't move.
18:50 He was like, "I'm going to switch back."
18:52 I've seen Wilson fall short with a couple of uppercuts and then Valdez land downstairs.
18:56 Leaping shot from Liam Wilson.
19:02 I don't think he needs to do that. He's the longer fighter.
19:05 It's a game plan he's trying to follow.
19:07 When he was staying from the outsides, the mid-range outside, outside the mid-range, he was doing extremely well.
19:13 But right now, again, the game plan is to try to wear down Valdez.
19:17 But however, Valdez has made an adjustment by using his legs and defense to set up his attacks.
19:24 You see the blood emanating from the mouth of Oscar Valdez.
19:27 I can't help but think about what happened when he suffered a broken jaw against Scott Quigg.
19:33 I'm not saying it's that, but...
19:37 Look, Valdez is using smarts. He's using smarts right now. He's using his experience.
19:43 He's not fighting a war right now.
19:46 Ooh, straight right hand.
19:49 Liam Wilson.
19:50 Come on.
19:55 Break! Thumb punch.
19:57 Here's the bell. Obey the bell.
20:00 Time. Good job.
20:03 Wilson gets an Oscar Valdez's face as he heads back to his corner.
20:07 Big breaths, big breaths.
20:13 Kick those elbows tight. Keep digging that body.
20:16 See when his back's on the rope? It's not the shift.
20:19 And the uppercut, Tim, has been a punch that's been there for Liam Wilson from the jump.
20:24 It's not going to be there for any opponent that faces Oscar Valdez because he leans forward.
20:29 And when you lean forward, you provide a lane for that uppercut.
20:33 But beautiful uppercut on the inside.
20:35 That's a new punch that he added to his arsenal to get ready for this fight.
20:39 That tells you right there that he studied. He watched film, him and his team.
20:45 And that shot, Oscar Valdez has a hard time getting away from that shot
20:49 because all his weight is on his front foot and it's really hard to get it on your back foot once you're in that position.
20:55 All you have to do is watch what worked for Emmanuel Navarrete against Oscar Valdez.
21:00 You don't have to throw it from the other side of the ring,
21:03 but Liam Wilson has worked on his craft leading up to this world title opportunity
21:08 and they both meet each other in the center of the ring.
21:11 Wilson wants to fight. He wants to make this a war.
21:15 That's what he wants. He's like, "Nah, let's make it a war. Sit there and exchange with me, Valdez."
21:20 Ooh, nice right hook from Liam Wilson.
21:25 And Liam, in his head, he's thinking to himself,
21:30 "I'm not going to win this fight by boxing. I'm going to win this fight by taking it to him
21:36 and trying to beat on him every single round. That's how I'm going to win this fight."
21:40 We talked about left hooks. The Mexican fighters love the body shots.
21:44 Oscar Valdez loves that, but he's also keeping that right elbow tuck
21:48 protecting from Wilson's body shots here.
21:51 He's going to have to because Wilson, again, he's a taller fighter and he has the leverage in that shot.
21:58 Ooh, that's a nice left hook from Valdez.
22:00 Ooh, big shot.
22:02 That's Oscar Valdez right there, folks.
22:07 Vintage Oscar Valdez, and you do not want him to get momentum coming down the hill
22:13 because this is where Oscar Valdez feeds off the crowd, comes to get you, and punish you.
22:21 You know, look, you'll look brilliant if the game plan is working.
22:25 However, in these moments right here, you look silly.
22:27 You're the taller fighter. You have the ability to fight outside the mid-range,
22:32 and you're not doing that, and Valdez is making you pay.
22:36 Ooh, what a nice right uppercut from Oscar Valdez.
22:40 He took a page out of Wilson's book.
22:42 There's no point to be here, but I just feel that in Wilson's heart,
22:46 he wants this war. He's always envisioned this type of fight.
22:50 He said, "This is going to be a modern-day classic."
22:54 Defense? Who needs defense?
23:00 Forget about defense.
23:04 I mean, the fans love it.
23:07 They love a guy that's vulnerable and there to be hit at times,
23:12 and a guy that likes to throw leather as well.
23:14 [crowd cheering]
23:23 Valdez being very crafty here.
23:26 Yes.
23:27 Trying to put Wilson in a bad place.
23:30 Ooh, there's a nice straight right from Wilson.
23:34 You can't get Laxadaysic to look into Wilson either, though.
23:37 Oh, a short counter left hook from Oscar Valdez.
23:40 And, you know, the right uppercut is a left-right from Wilson.
23:45 I think the short, shortened left hook from Valdez has surprised me tonight.
23:51 Valdez decided to use his brain tonight instead of using his heart.
23:57 And that comes with age.
23:59 You know, he told us in a fighter meeting that,
24:01 "Hey, I work hard, but I don't work as hard as I did when I was younger,
24:05 because now I understand I don't have to."
24:07 He works smarter.
24:09 So far, you can see the work that both Valdez and Liam Wilson have done
24:14 as we reach the halfway point.
24:16 Yes, Wilson had a great ending to that last round for Wilson.
24:19 Take a deep breath.
24:26 Give me the bucket. I need to spit.
24:31 You made a big mistake.
24:36 You should just stand there if you were dominating him.
24:38 Close your guard.
24:40 If you stand at his range, he's gonna land that long right just like he did.
24:44 Inside, you're beating him up and down the ring.
24:47 I need you to pop him and then defensively be there so he doesn't come back.
24:52 Tim, great action from Valdez until he made that mistake, though.
24:59 Yes, I mean, honestly, Valdez has to recuperate.
25:02 But check out this right here.
25:04 You see Valdez coming around that guard with a looping right hand.
25:07 Liam Wilson is at the wrong range right here.
25:09 Yes, he's taller. Yes, he has longer arms.
25:12 But he wants to fight, and he's sitting in the pocket,
25:14 leaning over that front knee.
25:16 And you see Valdez saying, "Okay, I'll take it. Easy money.
25:19 Thank you for coming to the range where I'm going to have success."
25:23 And then to start this seventh round, it's another left hook from Oscar Valdez.
25:28 Now it's Wilson who lands a left hook.
25:31 And this fight is gonna start heating up.
25:33 Wilson going downstairs.
25:35 And that's where he can really hurt Valdez, I think.
25:38 There's another body shot from Liam Wilson.
25:40 That's where he needs to pay dividends.
25:42 He needs to pay some homage or respect down to that body.
25:45 He needs to go to that kitchen of Valdez.
25:48 Slow him down. Take those legs away.
25:50 He's the older fighter. He's been through a lot of wars.
25:53 That's how you weaken him.
25:55 214 rounds, Tim, and very few of them have been easy rounds coming into this fight.
26:01 Now he's at 220 rounds as a pro.
26:05 Oh, nice long straight right from Valdez.
26:07 Valdez was trying to set a lateral trap.
26:09 He's moving laterally now, little by little, taking small steps, looking for Liam to run into something.
26:14 And you know what it is. It's gonna be the left hook.
26:17 Williams has to be smart on the entryway.
26:19 There's the left hook right there.
26:21 And he caught him in the southpaw stance.
26:23 How does that change?
26:24 You're closer to the left hook now from the southpaw stance, if you will, sir.
26:28 You are closer. Yes, you are.
26:30 And Valdez doesn't really use that lead hand to occupy him as well.
26:35 But it's gonna leave opportunity for Valdez because he doesn't battle with the lead hand to sit on his left hook
26:41 as Wilson attempts to use his jab.
26:45 See Wilson walking forward, trying to break down the guard of Oscar Valdez.
26:50 He's in that peek-a-boo stance.
26:52 See? You see him trying to shoot that jab.
26:54 And you see Oscar trying to time him with that left hook.
26:57 Now if Oscar plays with his lead hand, then it becomes a sword battle up front.
27:02 Then he's not gonna have enough power to be generated.
27:05 But if he sits back...
27:06 Right counter, another right hand from Valdez.
27:10 Put some power behind it.
27:12 And see, Wilson was expecting Valdez not to...
27:15 Ooh, there's that left hook.
27:16 Oh, oh, oh, here comes Oscar Valdez!
27:20 And Wilson is on the brink of going down!
27:23 This is vintage Oscar Valdez!
27:26 33 years old!
27:27 Grit! Glory!
27:30 And the fans are on their feet.
27:32 How much did he leave in the tank here with 30 seconds left?
27:40 Valdez, once again, landing with the right hand.
27:45 And he's going after Liam Wilson!
27:48 You do not want to make Mark Nelson make a decision here if you're Liam Wilson.
27:54 Gotta start answering back, 'cause Valdez is landing uppercuts.
27:58 Valdez has bad intentions here, and the fight is over!
28:03 Mark Nelson steps in, as Wilson did nothing,
28:07 and Valdez made him do his job, despite suffering a cut.
28:12 [crowd cheering]
28:40 You see the dejection in the face of Liam Wilson,
28:44 who calls BS to him. He's not happy with the stoppage,
28:47 but he didn't do anything to stop Mark Nelson from doing his job.
28:52 Look, I gotta go back and re-watch it and re-watch the replay and that sequence.
28:58 If Nelson was saying, "Show me something, show me something, show me something,"
29:05 and then he doesn't show him anything, and he stops it,
29:10 then the fighter feels like, "Okay, you gave me an opportunity to show you something."
29:15 He didn't give him that opportunity.
29:17 However, Valdez had him hurt badly in that sequence,
29:22 and the fact that you don't punch is the reason why Nelson stepped in to save him.
29:27 It was tears of frustration, of embarrassment,
29:31 the last time Oscar Valdez was in this building.
29:35 Tonight, it's tears of joy.
29:37 We've said this is about redemption, Tim.
29:41 He fights with his heart on his sleeve,
29:43 and these tears mean so much to Oscar Valdez,
29:47 but so do the cheers that he won tonight from the fans.
29:51 You know what the difference was?
29:53 He didn't fight with his heart, he fought with his brain tonight.
29:57 That was the difference, Bernardo.
30:01 Hometown crowd, in the beginning, you see him starting to turn it up,
30:05 starting to take chances.
30:06 However, as the fight started to materialize and move forward,
30:10 and Wilson changed his game plan, he started having success,
30:13 but he was using lateral movement, making him miss, making him pay a kick eventually,
30:18 and then that's ultimately what happened.
30:22 That changed the tide right there.
30:24 Wilson fought with his heart, Valdez fought with his brain,
30:27 he set it up, and he caught him with the right shot,
30:30 and there you have it, he stopped him.
30:33 Let's send it up to Mark Shinnos for the official time of the stoppage.
30:37 Ladies and gentlemen, here inside the Desert Diamond Arena
30:41 in Glendale, Arizona, referee Mark Nelson
30:44 calls a stop to this bout at 2 minutes, 48 seconds of round number 7.
30:51 For your winner by technical knockout, and now the WBO interim junior lightweight champion of the world,
30:59 Oscar Valdez!
31:05 Listen to the crowd, this is what Oscar Valdez fights for.
31:11 That belt means everything to him, but he would leave tonight happy if he got this ovation from his fans, regardless.
31:20 This is what boxing is all about.
31:22 This is what Oscar epitomizes.
31:25 Oscar Valdez, the human, the fighter, the warrior.
