A sole custodian watches over the remote St Benedict's Abbey in Assisi.
Transcript
00:00 The search of quiet and meditation has pushed monks and hermits to the Abbey of San Benedetto
00:08 on Mount Subasio, a few kilometers away from Assisi, since the 9th century.
00:14 Restored several times after the terrible earthquake that hit Italy in 1997.
00:19 Today it is managed by Benedictine nuns who have entrusted its custody to its sole inhabitants.
00:26 I thought about it a bit because it was not an obvious choice,
00:32 but that desire pushed me to come here.
00:37 And that's what should push anyone who wants to come here and spend a few days with me.
00:44 Many desire peace and a space to contemplate life,
00:48 feeling the need to isolate themselves and spend a few days in the rooms of the Abbey in the company of its custodian.
00:56 A place like this is not taken for granted, so it must be preserved.
01:02 The peace and silence that is breathed here must be maintained.
01:08 I have had many requests in recent days from people who want to overcome this.
01:14 Living in peace and silence. Alberto has made it a lifestyle.
01:19 For others, it is the possibility to escape for a few days from the chaos and noise of everyday life
01:25 and maybe find yourself a little bit.
01:28 Alberto has been living in the Abbey since mid-March in the company of two faithful friends,
01:34 Berber and Spot, who together introduce visitors to the spirit of the place.
01:39 I think it is essential here to welcome, above all, those who want to come and see this place,
01:47 this extraordinary architecture, but also those who want to come and enjoy a little silence.
01:54 Here is enjoyed silence and the joy brought by simple things.
01:59 Luca Palamara for Aero News, Abbazia di San Benedetto, Assisi.
