00:02 [Coughing]
00:05 If this is how your loved ones are living, especially children in the family,
00:09 the one who can't stop coughing and is running out of breath,
00:13 don't let it go to your head and consult a doctor immediately.
00:16 Because this could be the one spreading pertussis or whooping cough.
00:21 If it's not taken care of, it could result in complications of death, especially for children and infants.
00:26 The complications of pertussis is when the cough doesn't stop,
00:32 you can reduce your body's oxygen, you can have respiratory failure, you can have pneumonia.
00:38 This is very dangerous for children less than one year old, especially infants who don't have vaccines.
00:46 Unlike COVID and other cases, it's not a virus but a bacteria.
00:50 The disease of pertussis is the reason why it can be treated by antibiotics.
00:54 Just like COVID, the way to get infected is through respiratory droplets
00:58 that come out of the mouth and nose, in the throat or throat.
01:01 That's why Dr. Solantien recommends it as an additional protection,
01:05 especially in places where there are many cases of pertussis,
01:08 wearing a face mask during school.
01:10 It's not safe for the elderly,
01:12 even though they can't experience the severe symptoms,
01:15 they can still get infected by bacteria.
01:18 Adults are also one of the sources of infection.
01:20 That's why it's important for adults to go to their doctors,
01:25 especially for the elderly, to get vaccinated so that it's protected
01:30 and the symptoms won't be transmitted to the children.
01:34 According to the Department of Health,
01:35 there were 453 cases of whooping cough in the first 10 weeks of the year.
01:40 It's far from the number of cases recorded in the same period in the past five years.
01:44 In Quezon City, in the first three months of 2024,
01:48 more than 20 cases of whooping cough were recorded.
01:52 It's close to the number of 27 cases recorded in the city in the whole year of 2023.
01:58 That's why the local government said,
02:00 "We need to declare that we have a pertussis outbreak in Quezon City."
02:08 In Barangay Payatas B,
02:10 the City Health Department's epidemiology and surveillance team was there.
02:15 It's not said that this is where the infection started,
02:18 but this is where the number one case was recorded this year.
02:22 They got sick.
02:24 Their relative also had symptoms.
02:27 On March 8, the twin sister also tested positive for the pertussis.
02:33 Her relative was infected.
02:35 Unfortunately, one of them died.
02:39 The other two siblings of case number one also tested positive.
02:43 The LGU quarantined the household that was infected with pertussis.
02:48 It's easy to get the pertussis if you're infected.
02:51 But it spreads quickly if there are many who are not vaccinated in the community.
02:55 According to the QCLGU, they have a problem with the vaccine.
02:59 Quezon City needs more than 42,000 doses of the Pantavalent vaccine
03:05 to stop the spread of the disease.
03:08 The Department of Health said that the supply will arrive in July.
03:12 That's why they're looking for other suppliers.
03:15 If there's a supply of Pantavalent vaccine,
03:20 we won't declare an outbreak because that means that we can easily control the situation.
03:27 For GMA Integrated News, I'm Mark Salazar.
03:31 Ivan, there's also a person who got infected.
03:32 24 hours.
