00:05 More than 400 cases of whooping cough or pertussis were reported in the country in the first 10 weeks of 2024.
00:14 In Quezon City, a pertussis outbreak has already been declared.
00:17 Here's the news of Mark Salazar.
00:19 27 cases of whooping cough or pertussis were reported in Quezon City in 2023.
00:27 Three were diagnosed.
00:29 In the first three months of 2024, the case of whooping cough or pertussis in Quezon City continued to rise.
00:37 The local government has already declared its outbreak.
00:40 As of March 20 this year, we already recorded 23 cases of pertussis.
00:48 What is more heartbreaking is this acute infectious disease has claimed the lives of four babies.
00:57 Their age ranging from 23 days to 60 days.
01:02 That is why we need to declare that we have a pertussis outbreak in Quezon City.
01:09 Pertussis is a respiratory disease caused by bacteria.
01:13 It is more deadly to children, especially to babies.
01:17 The symptoms are that it affects babies, usually children, for more than two weeks.
01:24 It is difficult to breathe.
01:27 Babies are mostly affected.
01:30 Other children, after giving birth, sometimes the baby coughs.
01:37 That is one of the descriptions we have.
01:39 There are cases of pertussis in five districts of Quezon City.
01:43 But in Barangay Payatas B, the epidemiology and surveillance of the City Health Department is in place.
01:50 It is not said that the infection started here.
01:53 But this is where case number one was repeated this year.
01:57 They had a baby.
01:59 The baby had symptoms.
02:02 On March 8, the twin sister also tested positive for the pertussis.
02:08 The baby was infected.
02:10 Unfortunately, one of the twins died.
02:14 The other two siblings of case number one also had symptoms.
02:18 Case number one, the LGU quarantined the household that was infected with pertussis.
02:24 But the LGU clarified that the outbreak will not be brought back to the barangay or streetwide lockdown.
02:31 We only quarantined those within the household and there are longer contacts in our case.
02:37 So that is what we are quarantining.
02:40 We are issuing a quarantine order or isolation order to the families.
02:46 Pertussis can be treated if it is contagious.
02:49 But it spreads quickly if there are many unvaccinated people in the community.
02:53 According to QCLGU, they have a problem with the vaccine.
02:57 Quezon City needs more than 42,000 doses of the Pantavalent vaccine to stop the spread of the disease.
03:05 But the Department of Health said that the supply will arrive in July.
03:10 That's why they are looking for other suppliers.
03:13 But there is nothing to panic about for now.
03:16 They are reminding us to be careful just like during COVID.
03:20 We should always wash our hands, sit and lie on our arms, wear a face mask and self-quarantine if we have symptoms.
03:28 According to the Department of Health, 453 cases of whooping cough were recorded in the first 10 weeks of the year
03:36 compared to 23 cases at the same time in 2022.
