Vietnam farmers struggle for fresh water as drought brings salinization
Transcript
00:00 A raging El Nino presence in the Southeast Asia region has visited damage to life and
00:05 livelihood far and wide.
00:07 While El Nino has had its dry spell cover at least 41 provinces in the Philippines, in
00:12 Vietnam a month-long heatwave has parched the land while rising sea levels have brackish
00:17 water mixed with fresh water seeping into irrigation canals and feeding crops and trees
00:22 with highly saline most moisture.
00:25 The trees are fast drying up while crops continue to shrivel and die because of no rain or fresh
00:29 water to nourish them.
00:31 This saline intrusion has had a grave effect on durian fruit trees which are bound to eventually
00:36 wither and die if the prolonged dry spell persists indefinitely and the trees have nothing
00:41 to feed on but spiked water from the sea.
