Acting Inspector Travis Mills said it appeared the BMW crossed onto the wrong side of the road and into the path of the cyclist.
Transcript
00:00 At approximately 2.30pm yesterday afternoon upon Lady Denman Drive at the base of Black Mountain,
00:07 an 18-year-old driver of a grey-coloured BMW sedan collided with a 36-year-old female cyclist.
00:16 As a result of that collision, regrettably, the cyclist lost her life, and that takes ACT Road toll to the 2024.
00:26 Do we know any details about what the BMW was doing at this time, how they were driving, that sort of thing?
00:32 Let me just say our investigation is at its very early stages at this present point in time.
00:37 What I can say, however, it appears excessive speed was a contributing factor for this growth in total.
00:43 It was at a set of traffic lights. Do we know if they were on a red cycle or a blue or green, that sort of thing?
00:51 So the information that we have from our investigation to date and from information provided by witnesses
00:59 is the cyclist was actually travelling more fully upon the road.
01:03 So the cyclist wasn't actually on the footpath or the cycle lane adjacent to the roadway,
01:08 travelling to Nancy City West. The sedan was travelling, broadly speaking, towards Zulberry.
01:15 So does it look like this vehicle has evened to the left side of the road?
01:19 Let me just say again, our investigation is still ongoing at this present point in time, but speed was,
01:25 excessive speed was a contributing factor for this growth.
01:28 The investigators from the major collision team are speaking with the driver of the motor vehicle
01:34 and he is cooperating with the police officer.
01:36 What about cyclists and their families?
01:39 The next of kin notifications have been undertaken by police.
01:42 The cyclist had not long become a resident of the ACT Road.
01:47 Do you know where they moved from?
01:50 So the cyclist was an overseas national who recently relocated from Queensland.
01:55 And do they have family, children, or the gents?
02:00 I'm not privy to that information. I'm not sure I'm certain.
02:04 In terms of the damage to that vehicle, I mean two wheels were pretty much ripped off with their suspension intact.
02:10 There's no suspicion that there may be another vehicle involved?
02:14 There's no suggestion at this time that other than the cyclist there was no other vehicle involved.
02:19 Can you just look at where the cyclist was on the road and say they were travelling into the ACT Road?
02:25 So the information that I have is that the cyclist was travelling, I guess, city down, the pond, Lady Denman Drive,
02:31 whilst the vehicle was travelling westbound on Lady Denman Drive, in the opposite direction.
