00:00 I had to hit my rock bottom and I had to do it at my time.
00:04 Selena Gomez is opening up about her mental health struggles.
00:07 Speaking at a South by Southwest panel over the weekend in Austin, Texas, alongside her mom,
00:11 Selena revealed that she had hit her own rock bottom.
00:13 There was a lot of people that cared about me more than I cared about myself that
00:17 really wanted me to do things I wasn't ready for.
00:23 I had to hit my rock bottom and I had to do it at my time
00:27 and it took a couple of tries but I'd like to thank and hope that I'm in a much better place now.
00:34 The singer and actress shared that her mom was quote "very vocal and open"
00:38 and checking in on how the two were feeling.
00:40 I think we watched Girl Interrupted when I was like 12 and I was like,
00:44 "Oh, that's what rehab looks like."
00:48 And I was like confused by it and then we ended up having one of the most honest
00:54 conversations that we've ever had together and I really appreciated it and it allowed me to not be scared.
01:02 But I will say this, you can't force someone to do it.
01:05 Selena also reflected on her candid documentary from 2022, My Mind and Me.
01:10 I released a documentary and I was terrified to do it and I went back and forth on whether I'd do it or not.
01:18 And I think the moment I did that I felt this insane amount of release because
01:26 there wasn't any hiding anymore.
01:30 There wasn't just this image that people could see and think, "Oh, it looks nice."
01:37 And it was probably one of the hardest moments of my life.
01:40 So I would say it's helped release a lot of anxiety of keeping it in.
01:46 Just to let people know I'm having a hard day or I just need a minute.
01:52 The singer revealed that watching parts of it back was an emotional experience for her.
01:55 We shot the documentary six years and it makes me sick to hear the things that I was saying
02:05 about myself in the beginning. It bums me out because I...
02:13 But I think everybody can relate to that feeling. I think like everyone was sharing,
02:19 it's important to speak to yourself with kindness, but I don't think I really understood that.
02:25 It's funny because all the things I was b****** about then I'm grateful for now.
02:31 At the end of the panel, the Only Murders in the Building star
02:34 spoke about some of her mental health tips.
02:35 Personally, obviously, would be therapy. Sometimes meetings are more impactful.
02:43 For me, and I also am a very deep believer in DBT, which is dialectical behavior therapy.
02:52 And that's something that I hold close to me. And a lot of those skills are things I've learned,
02:59 like RAIN, which is recognize and allow your feelings, investigate them, and then nurture
03:08 yourself. And things like that will kind of re-pop into my head and it's reassuring.
