00:00 Silence.
00:07 Silence.
00:35 I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.
01:04 CM Punk was photographed at Tuesday's episode of NXT, watching the show from behind the
01:08 hard cam position.
01:09 But this is potentially far more than just a guy watching some wrestling while he's
01:13 out injured.
01:14 It's work experience.
01:16 Almost as soon as returning back home to sports entertainment in November's Survivor
01:20 Series, Punk has appeared almost equally as interested in developmental as the main roster.
01:26 Unlike Triple H, Punk has reportedly always heavily respected Shawn Michaels, who's
01:31 the current head of NXT, and he has frequently shown up at the Performance Center to do everything
01:36 from learning about production, giving feedback to young wrestlers - like, don't use real
01:42 glass - and even once appeared onscreen in the opening segment of NXT Deadline.
01:48 According to WrestlePurists, this is because Punk's long-term career goal is to succeed
01:52 HBK as heading up NXT.
01:55 You can say many things against Punk and his various inconsistencies, but you can't say
02:00 he doesn't care about nurturing new talent.
02:02 From his first WWE run occasionally showing up in NXT and originally pitching the Shield,
02:08 from choosing to work with guys like Darby Allin and MJF in AEW, and now back in WWE
02:14 where he's putting in time down in developmental while he's out injured, CM Punk to NXT confirmed.
02:20 But it wasn't just us who were surprised to see him at Tuesday's episode, as Fightful
02:24 Select is reporting many talent and personnel within NXT didn't know he was there either.
02:30 Apparently Punk kept a much lower profile than usual, and a lot of wrestlers only found
02:35 out he was in attendance when they saw the photos online.
02:38 But Booker T knew.
02:41 Booker T knows everything.
02:43 Booker T isn't just the colour commentator on NXT, he also produces noises from his mouth
02:48 on his own podcast called the Hall of Fame, where, in the most recent episode, Booker
02:53 revealed if he saw Punk backstage at Tuesday's taping.
02:57 [Clip] I'm talking about that out there.
03:08 But I almost had like a little, little run in with CM Punk.
03:13 The internet might want to pick that up.
03:14 Me and CM Punk almost got into it at NXT on this week.
03:19 Okay, you'll tell me more later.
03:21 We'll talk about it later.
03:22 I don't want to put it out there because they're gonna pick it up and, you know, run with it.
03:26 But yeah, I'll talk to you about that after.
03:28 It's important to note there that Booker T did not want to put this out there, which
03:32 he has managed by posting that specific clip on his own YouTube channel, Reality of Wrestling,
03:37 with the title "CM Punk and Booker T almost 'get into it' at WWE NXT tapings.
03:44 Shucky ducky quack quack."
03:47 So why would Booker and Punk have the beef?
03:50 Booker has a lot of takes on his podcasts these days, and it's difficult to know which
03:54 ones he actually believes, and which ones are just him reacting to a news story in a
03:58 controversial 'I'm just working you, Marks' old school manner.
04:02 Some include claiming LA Knight has a bad attitude backstage, trying to start a work
04:07 shoot feud with Corey Graves in 2018 who had just replaced him on Raw commentary for the
04:11 benefit of no one, and once saying CM Punk's AEW debut was no good because all he did was
04:18 speak about WWE and ice cream bars.
04:24 But he also said, just over a month before Punk returned to WWE, "CM Punk didn't
04:29 just leave WWE, he got fired from WWE."
04:34 Debatable.
04:35 "He didn't just leave AEW, he got fired with cause from AEW."
04:41 What value does a person like that bring to your company?
04:45 His better wrestling days are behind.
04:47 So perhaps that's what Booker and Punk got into this week.
04:51 But also, probably not, because they've already seemingly made up over that when Booker
04:56 changed his tune in December, saying on his podcast Punk had been "very refreshing coming
05:01 down to NXT" where they had actually already spoken to each other and Punk brought up Booker's
05:06 changing opinions.
05:07 "I ran into CM Punk in catering.
05:10 I was sitting there talking to Jeremy Borash.
05:12 I walked up to CM Punk and said, 'CM Punk, what up, man?'
05:16 He stands up and he goes, 'What's up, man?
05:20 You flip-flopper.'
05:21 It was very cool.
05:22 I can't say anything bad about him.
05:24 I know people wish I would say something bad about CM Punk.
05:27 I ain't kissing ass or anything either.
05:29 It just seemed like he was in a calm space."
05:32 Like the Graves situation from 2018, this feels similar to how Booker occasionally likes
05:37 to play up an exaggerated beef for the sheer thrill of working us fans.
05:42 That certainly seems to be the case in his YouTube clips comment section, where his Reality
05:46 of Wrestling channel has replied "Shhhhh, secret, keeping a secret face emoji" to
05:52 someone comparing it to the Worked Corey feud.
05:55 What do you think is going on with Booker and Punk?
05:57 Let me know in the comments, where I'll be replying to people FROM OUTTA ALMOST GETTING
06:01 INTO IT.
06:02 Bear all this in mind for our next story, which probably doesn't just require a pinch
06:06 of salt.
06:07 You might as well lay it out in lines and snort it.
06:10 Because also according to Booker T on his Hall of Fame podcast, Sami Zayn was upset
06:15 following this week's episode of Raw.
06:17 Zayn won the gauntlet match to be named the No. 1 contender to Gunther's Intercontinental
06:21 Championship at WrestleMania 40, where he overcame dastardly heels Bronson Reed and
06:26 Shinsuke Nakamura, but also, problematically for Zayn, an underdog potentially even more
06:32 underdoggy than him, Chad Gable.
06:37 WWE had done such an effective job of building Gable's chase for the IC title, many fans
06:42 found themselves more invested in Chad winning than the usually fan favourite Zayn.
06:48 According to Booker T, who was sat next to him on the plane afterwards, the online reaction
06:52 really affected Sami.
06:54 He was so literally upset about the online heat that he got from the fans.
06:58 He's like, "Man, I thought the fans loved me.
07:01 And then next thing you know, I see all this stuff."
07:04 He still, like I said, was feeling that he let someone down, just because the fans didn't
07:09 think the match was as good as I thought it was.
07:12 We can blame Booker T for many things, but one thing he can't be blamed for… is the
07:16 death of WCW.
07:17 How's that for a hard segue?
07:20 So who is?
07:21 Here's a clip from our brand new video going live tomorrow - Who Really Killed WCW?
07:28 For the last two decades, everyone has had their say in who really killed WCW.
07:35 Was it Hulk Hogan and his creative control?
07:38 Was it Eric Bischoff and his lack of adaptability?
07:41 Was it Vince Russo and his terrible booking choices that drove viewers away?
07:46 Or was it someone else?
07:49 In order to figure this out, we need to take it right back to the beginning and go through
07:54 until the very end.
07:56 I'm Luke Owen, and Who Really Killed WCW?
08:00 Let's find out.
08:19 Thank you so much to everyone who's been watching our new Saturday videos like that.
08:23 They take a lot of work, but we're all so proud of them.
08:26 Remember to subscribe and enable notifications to always on to know when that goes live first.
08:31 And remember, we've still got a SmackDown review, it's just over on the WrestleTalk
08:35 Podcast channel, so subscribe over there to watch that as well.
08:39 In the last several weeks, AEW has put on one of the best pay-per-views of all time
08:43 with the Sting retirement-focused revolution.
08:46 They put on probably the match of the year with Will Ospreay vs DeKesha, and they've
08:50 assembled what might be the greatest in-ring roster of all time with the addition of the
08:56 aforementioned Ospreay and debuting Kazuchika Okada as a heel.
09:00 Continuing the momentum, Wednesday's episode of Dynamite was themed around another huge
09:05 signing, WWE's former Sasha Banks, now called Mercedes Monet.
09:10 And all that excitement has paid off, with AEW ratings staying completely flat.
09:18 Like AJ Styles thinks the Earth is rounder than AEW's ratings.
09:23 Despite drawing a very decent 9,500 fans to Boston's TD Garden on Wednesday, the episode
09:28 was only watched by 801,000 people on TV, with a .27 rating in the 18-49 demographic,
09:36 which Dave Meltzer has called "obviously disappointing".
09:39 The demo is the exact same figure the show did the previous week, and is tied for the
09:43 third lowest 18-49 number this year.
09:47 Big business?
09:48 More like… the exact same level of business?
09:51 Am I right?
09:54 But who cares about traditional TV?
09:57 It's dying.
09:58 It's all about online views now.
10:00 Far more fans are going to see it there.
10:02 That's the true indicator of modern success.
10:05 But just one more thing.
10:06 Monet's AEW debut clip on their YouTube channel has done 720,000 views, which is by
10:13 far the most watched upload from that episode, but nowhere near the breakout numbers you'd
10:18 expect.
10:19 Bryan Harrison, Okada's debut clip the week before, is currently at a similar 698,000,
10:24 but Adam Copeland's AEW debut video five months ago pulled in 6.3 million views.
10:32 Sting and Hook clips have done the best views for AEW's YouTube channel in 2024 so far,
10:36 with the Samoa Joe vs Hook match currently at 1.1 million.
10:40 But to be fair, most of those are me on my lunch break.
10:42 The disappointing number could be explained by Monet not having the level of mainstream
10:46 star appeal some vocal parts of Twitter claim she does, and/or AEW's presentation of her
10:53 debut was a failure.
10:55 AEW decided to copy and paste their CM Punk first dance booking for Mercedes by all but
11:01 confirming she'd debut at the show.
11:03 With Punk, the show was booked in Chicago.
11:06 That was your clue.
11:07 For Monet, it was booked in her hometown of Boston and called a 'big business', heavily
11:12 referencing her gimmick.
11:14 But despite a strong lead-in from the preceding Big Bang Theory, only 70,000 more viewers
11:19 watched the opening quarter hour compared to the previous week, which is where Mercedes
11:23 debuted.
11:24 It implies AEW's strategy of not explicitly telling fans Monet would be debuting at the
11:30 start of this episode had failed, as more might've tuned in as the show started.
11:36 Following Monet's debut, despite a very strong card, the rest of the episode heavily
11:40 declined as it went on, ending with just 627,000 viewers for the Riho vs Willow Nightingale
11:47 main event.
11:48 Which makes sense, because while that was a really fun match, that feud has only been
11:53 presented as a midcard sidequest story.
11:55 AEW's presumed intention was that viewers would stick around, because Monet had teased
12:00 she'd involve herself in the main event, but that obviously didn't work out either.
12:04 Monet's debut, with a different name to her WWE character and an absence that's
12:09 undermined by also having wrestled for New Japan in her two years away, was clearly nowhere
12:14 near the level of CM Punk returning to wrestling for the first time in seven years.
12:20 Fightful is reporting Monet has been signed with AEW for over two months now, and for
12:24 a multi-year deal.
12:25 So you can get used to her on AEW TV, but don't get used to The Rock on WWE, because
12:31 he's going to leave the promotion after WrestleMania.
