00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the very worst anime that
00:11 everyone hates.
00:14 20.
00:17 Ninja Collection
00:29 When they call this a collection instead of an anime, they aren't kidding.
00:34 The story, and we use that term loosely, follows a group of ninja who go around defeating evil
00:40 smoke spirits.
00:45 At least we think.
00:47 The actual plot gets lost pretty fast amid all the poorly animated fight scenes.
00:52 Every episode is only a few minutes long, meaning there's no time for characterisation,
00:57 rising action, or any kind of coherent storytelling at all.
01:02 You can technically finish Ninja Collection in under an hour, but the show is so offensively
01:08 boring, you'll still struggle to make it to the end.
01:12 19.
01:15 Tesla Note
01:16 There's two key ingredients to making a popular action comedy – it's literally
01:22 in the name.
01:23 You need action, and you need comedy.
01:26 Yet somehow Tesla Note doesn't have either.
01:33 To start, the story can be boiled down to "get the thing before the bad guy does",
01:38 "rinse, redo, and repeat" 13 times, and you have a whole season of Tesla Note.
01:45 The series tries to liven up its familiar tropes with some bantering humour, but it
01:50 ends up falling on its face more often than not.
01:56 Oh yeah, and then there's the animation.
01:59 3D anime already has a bad reputation, and to put it nicely, Tesla Note won't be convincing
02:06 anyone otherwise.
02:10 18.
02:14 Conception
02:17 To buckle up, this plot summary is something else.
02:21 In order to save a fantasy world, young man Itsuki has to get down and dirty with 12 different
02:27 star maidens to make an army of super-powered offspring.
02:32 Seriously.
02:34 Questionable ethics aside, the strangest part of "Conception" is that Itsuki doesn't
02:40 actually need to sleep with the women to make a child.
02:47 A show like this was never going to be high art, but at the very least, we could have
02:52 respected commitment to the bit.
02:54 Instead, "Conception" goes down as a disappointing fumble that's too wild to recommend, and
03:01 too tame to be a guilty pleasure.
03:03 17.
03:05 Dracula – Sovereign of the Damned
03:08 For what it's worth, this is probably the only anime in existence where you get to see
03:12 Dracula steal Satan's bride.
03:17 Unfortunately, it's not as cool as it sounds.
03:23 Despite being based on a Marvel Comics character, the film's creative merits quickly fizzle
03:28 out thanks to its flat storytelling and flatter animation.
03:33 It's a droll, boring affair from start to finish.
03:36 The story is practically nonsensical anyway.
03:39 Then again, what do you expect when you cram 70 issues of comic book lore into 90 minutes?
03:52 If this is the best Dracula could manage, he should have stayed in his tomb.
03:57 16.
03:58 "Luna Legend" – Tsukihime
04:00 Say it with us now, there is no Tsukihime anime.
04:11 Based upon the outrageously popular visual novel, "Luna Legend" should have been
04:15 a slam dunk.
04:17 But that would have required actually adapting it properly.
04:20 Instead, the characters are unrecognisable, the pacing is atrocious, and the story is
04:26 filled to the brim with head-scratching changes.
04:30 "Luna Legend" is such a misfire, many fans of the original joke that it never existed
04:35 in the first place.
04:36 We can't blame them either.
04:38 There's literally no reason to watch "Luna Legend Tsukihime" when the visual novel
04:42 is the same thing, but way, way better.
04:48 15.
04:50 "The Rising of the Shield Hero" – Season 2
04:53 Despite the name, "Rise" is actually the opposite of what Naofumi did here.
05:03 He got off to a strong start with a first season full of action, revenge, and heartfelt
05:08 adventure.
05:09 But sometime during the hiatus, "Shield Hero" forgot how to tell an interesting
05:14 story at all.
05:15 It's such a stark 180, that you can't help but wonder, "What happened?"
05:20 With glacial pacing and no clear sense of direction, this sophomore slump turned "Shield
05:26 Hero" from appointment television into a disappointing has-been.
05:31 Season 3 redeemed the show a bit, but by then, most fans already abandoned this sinking ship
05:37 for good.
05:40 14.
05:42 "Vampire Homes"
05:48 In this case, what you see is what you get.
05:52 "Vampire Homes" is quite literally about a knock-off Sherlock Holmes who investigates
05:57 vampires.
05:58 No, it doesn't get any more clever than that.
06:02 Since it's based on a mobile game, you'd expect there to be some kind of message or
06:06 fan service.
06:08 But nope, "Vampire Homes" is nothing more than a lowbrow parody that never should have
06:13 been approved, let alone seen the light of day.
06:16 As if to prove how little anyone cared about the final product, the animation – or lack
06:21 thereof – is so bad, it's almost funny.
06:24 Elementary, this is not, dear Watson.
06:30 13.
06:33 The Devil Is A Part-Timer – Season 2
06:36 At the start of this reverse isekai, Satan gets demoted from a demon lord to a fast food
06:42 worker.
06:43 Then, in season two, he gets demoted again, this time into a hollow cash grab.
06:53 The debut of "The Devil Is A Part-Timer" was engaging, inventive, and above all else,
06:59 hilarious.
07:00 Three things that this 2022 follow-up is not.
07:04 The show also changed animation studios, and the drop-off in quality is impossible to miss.
07:10 The downgrade wouldn't sting so much if we didn't already have 13 outstanding episodes
07:16 proving how great the concept can be.
07:18 The Devil Is A Part-Timer should have been one of anime's best, but after this season,
07:23 it's a cautionary tale.
07:27 12.
07:29 Brothers Conflict
07:31 As if moving in with a new stepdad isn't hard enough, the teenage Emma also has to
07:36 deal with a metric ton of romantic advances.
07:39 That's all fine and dandy until you realise her love interests are her 13 stepbrothers.
07:49 There's more brothers than episodes in the series, and naturally, it's a recipe for
07:57 total disaster.
07:59 Brothers Conflict throws a bunch of clichΓ©s into a blender, adds a thick dose of icky
08:04 family drama, and kills it a day.
08:07 Oh yeah, and there's a talking squirrel too.
08:10 We tried to explain it, but like most things in Brothers Conflict, it's easier to just
08:15 ignore it and move on.
08:20 11.
08:23 Gazi's Wing
08:25 This three-episode OVA has it all – a reluctant hero, a war-infested fantasy world, and a
08:31 whole lot of overly dramatic set-pieces.
08:38 It's nothing you haven't seen a million times before.
08:42 But in contrast to its forgettable plot, the English dub is incredibly memorable – just
08:47 not for the right reasons.
08:49 Even for the 90s, these performances are so ludicrously over-the-top, it's hard to imagine
08:56 how anyone thought this was okay to release.
08:59 The line delivery goes from bad, to so bad it's good, back around to just plain bad
09:05 again.
09:06 Some advice?
09:07 Save your ears, and skip this one while you still can.
09:15 10.
09:17 Pupa
09:18 The scariest part of this horror anime isn't the graphic violence, the titular pupa virus,
09:24 or even the tight four-minute episodes.
09:27 While those are still glaring issues, the real threat is Yume and Utsutsu themselves.
09:43 When the two siblings are exposed to the namesake illness, Yume becomes a man-eating monster,
09:49 and Utsutsu learns to regenerate at will.
09:52 You can probably guess the gory places their relationship goes.
10:00 With the right care, that idea could actually work.
10:03 Sadly, Pupa's meagre runtime doesn't leave much room for thoughtful analysis – or really,
10:10 any kind of in-depth plot at all.
10:12 Instead, fans were left with a shallow snoozefest that mistakes shock value for actual entertainment.
10:19 9.
10:21 Lady Spoh
10:22 Do you like sports anime?
10:24 How about fan service?
10:25 Juicy plots, engaging rivalries, that whole thing?
10:29 Good.
10:30 Then stay clear of Lady Spoh, because it's none of that.
10:34 Women playing sports in space sounds like a surefire premise.
10:38 But rather than exploring that, Lady Spoh devotes most of its episodes to literal potty
10:44 humour.
10:45 Oh, and when we say "episodes", we really mean slideshows.
10:52 That's not us being mean.
10:54 Lady Spoh is actually just still images with mouth flaps.
10:58 Even if you can somehow get past that, what you're left with is a sports anime that
11:03 barely focuses on sports.
11:06 The real question here is, what is the point?
11:12 8.
11:14 Superior Defender Gundam Force
11:17 You'd think a franchise like Gundam would be too big to fail.
11:21 But in 2003, Superior Defender Gundam Force proved everyone wrong with an unmitigated
11:28 train wreck of an anime.
11:33 Everything fans loved about the series was gone.
11:36 The Gundams were sentient, the animation was pure CG, and the storyline was dumbed down
11:42 to appeal to a younger demographic.
11:44 To add insult to injury, this kiddie version was supposed to mark Gundam's 25th anniversary
11:51 too.
11:52 Surprising no one, this so-called celebration went down in flames.
11:58 In fact, at the time, SD Gundam Force was the least-watched Gundam title in Japan ever.
12:05 Those kinds of numbers don't lie.
12:08 7.
12:09 Berserk Whether you're a long-time fan or have
12:12 never caught an episode, there's no enjoying this 3D misfire.
12:17 On principle alone, the janky CGI and lacklustre pacing would make for an incredibly middling
12:23 fantasy anime.
12:25 But the fact that this has the name "Berserk" attached to it makes it so much worse.
12:32 The 1995 series is still beloved to this day, to the point that fans spent almost 20 years
12:39 asking for a proper sequel.
12:41 What they got instead was an ugly hack job that failed to do its source material justice.
12:47 Suffice it to say, 2016's "Berserk" is not the follow-up fans wanted, expected,
12:53 or deserved.
12:54 6.
12:55 Giviate You want a plot rundown?
13:01 Okay, here goes.
13:06 A samurai, a ninja, and a monk walk into a bar and start killing monsters.
13:12 There you go, now you're all caught up on the mess that is Giviate.
13:17 Despite some time-travelling shenanigans and an action-filled set-up, the show is an exercise
13:23 in staying awake.
13:26 There's just no stakes in anything that happens, mainly because it's impossible to take the
13:34 hideous CG monsters seriously.
13:37 Keep in mind, this is a show about a pandemic turning people into mindless creatures, and
13:42 it aired in 2020.
13:49 Yawn-inducing at best and tone-deaf at worst, Giviate is barely worth the time it takes
13:55 to scroll past it.
13:58 5.
13:59 Hand Shakers Holding hands is a normal part of any romance
14:03 anime.
14:04 Here, though, it's the entire show.
14:09 For reasons we can't even begin to unpack, Tazuna and Koyori have to remain joined at
14:14 the palm in order to ask God for a wish.
14:18 But first, they have to defeat other pairs of hand shakers.
14:21 Don't ask us why.
14:23 The plot is incomprehensible, and yet the visuals are somehow even worse.
14:29 If you like a boring 3D background, headache-inducing camera work, and oily filters over every frame,
14:36 Hand Shakers is for you.
14:39 But if you value your time, or your eyes, it's best to avoid this one like the bloody
14:44 plague.
14:45 4.
14:46 Mars of Destruction Anyone who says there's no such thing as
14:52 bad publicity has clearly never read a review for Mars of Destruction.
14:57 This OVA is legendary in all the wrong ways, and truly, we'd be here all day if we tried
15:04 to break down why.
15:05 So we'll just hit the big points.
15:07 The animation is abysmal, the story is a walking clichΓ©, and the so-called twist ending inspires
15:14 more laughter than anything else.
15:28 You can go through every component, there's just nothing redeemable here.
15:33 Add in lazily edited death scenes and comically overblown voice acting, and Mars of Destruction
15:39 is a textbook example of anime gone wrong.
15:45 3.
15:47 The Promised Neverland – Season 2 Not every story gets the anime it deserves,
15:53 but this isn't just a bad adaptation, it's a full-on butchering.
16:01 Unlike its brilliant first season, The Promised Neverland's second go-around began needlessly
16:07 deviating from the source material.
16:09 All it did was create an overly complicated narrative that no one was happy with.
16:14 But even if you excuse the growing pains, there's no defending the finale.
16:19 Instead of getting things back on track, The Promised Neverland crammed half the manga into
16:24 a montage and then had the girl to say "the end".
16:28 It was a spit in the face to the story, and had everyone agreeing that this anime had
16:33 broken its promise.
16:37 2.
16:38 X-Arm There's hideous, there's unwatchable, and
16:42 then there's X-Arm.
16:44 It's no stretch to say that this is in serious consension for one of the ugliest anime to
16:50 ever grace television screens.
16:52 It's not just that the CGI is genuinely atrocious, these shaky camera movements will
16:58 actually hurt your eyes after a while.
17:07 We wish we could say the story and characters were any better, but they're not.
17:13 X-Arm fails on every fundamental level, both as an anime and as a piece of entertainment.
17:19 To be fair, there might be a good story buried somewhere in its sci-fi premise.
17:24 But if there is, you won't find it in this adaptation.
17:40 1.
17:49 FLCL Grunge If you're a die-hard FLCL fan, the only
17:54 thing we can say is "sorry".
18:00 In yet another attempt to cash in on the magic of the original series, Grunge became a money-grubbing
18:06 affair devoid of any passion whatsoever.
18:10 At first glance, you'd probably think the cheap CGI is bad enough.
18:14 But since each episode is essentially the same story, from a different character's
18:19 point of view, the whole thing feels redundant before it even begins.
18:23 Ironically, that's a good metaphor for how completely unnecessary Grunge is in the first
18:29 place.
18:30 Now that they've officially lost their fanbase for good, fingers crossed FLCL can finally
18:36 rest in peace.
18:42 Did we miss any anime misfires?
