Transcript
00:00 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has insisted that the Philippines will continue to implement
00:06 independent foreign policy in decisions and actions that have to do with the protection of national interests.
00:14 Meanwhile, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has recognized the strong economy of the Philippines
00:22 under the leadership of President Marcos Jr.
00:25 Alan Francisco has a report.
00:29 In a message from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at the Lowy Institute in Melbourne, Australia,
00:35 he reiterated the unchanging position of the Philippines in the South China Sea.
00:40 But he also gave a long-lasting friendship and relationship between the Filipinos and the Chinese people.
00:47 At the same time, centuries of friendship and kinship bind the Filipino and Chinese people.
00:53 We pursue with the People's Republic of China comprehensive strategic cooperation
00:59 founded on mutual respect and mutual benefit.
01:03 Our independent foreign policy compels us to cooperate with them on matters where our interests align,
01:10 to respectfully disagree on areas where our views differ,
01:16 and to push back when our sworn principles such as our sovereignty, our sovereign rights,
01:23 and our jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea are questioned or ignored.
01:28 His position in the West Philippine Sea is part of his sworn duty as the President of the country,
01:34 even though the incidents in the South China Sea are one after another.
01:39 It is unfortunate that despite the clarity provided by international law,
01:44 provocative, unilateral, and illegal actions continue to infringe upon our sovereignty,
01:51 our sovereign rights, our jurisdictions.
01:54 This pattern of aggression obstructs our path towards ASEAN's vision of the South China Sea
02:02 as a sea of peace, stability, and of prosperity.
02:07 We simply have no choice.
02:10 We must defend the territory of the Republic.
02:14 And that is a primordial duty of a leader.
02:18 In the same speaking engagement, President Marcos was praised.
02:23 Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said that the Philippine economy is lagging
02:28 in his position amid the crisis.
02:31 Emerging from the pandemic, a key focus for President Marcos has been his economy.
02:37 Being very proactive on that as we began this year, inflation was reducing.
02:43 And in terms of economic growth, there was no stronger economy than the Philippines in Southeast Asia.
02:50 This January, the Philippine Statistics Authority said that inflation or increase in purchases
02:56 has decreased since December 2023 compared to November 2023.
03:01 Australian Deputy Prime Minister also acknowledged President Marcos' criticism
03:06 of the leadership of the Agriculture Department as a political mission
03:10 to use the country's self-sufficiency.
03:12 Australian officials also praised the President for the performance of the Philippines
03:16 in the entire economy of the countries in Southeast Asia.
03:19 The President also emphasized that economic security is a national security.
03:25 From Melbourne, Australia, Alan Francisco for Pabansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
