Botafogo's 4-2 Rio de Janeiro derby win against Fluminense descended into chaos in the game's closing stages following some creative time-wasting shenanigans.

The usual tensions associated with the clash were heightened in stoppage time of Sunday's game following the apparent head injury to a Botafogo substitute.

With the away side leading 3-2 in a tie where not even victory would guarantee progression to the next stage of the Carioca Serie A, left-back Hugo dragged his team-mate onto the field of play realizingto forced the official to halt proceedings and, as a result, wind down the clock.

But his underhanded move was matched by Fluminense's goalkeeper alongside midfielder Matheus Martinelli, who swiftly dragged the stricken outfielder back off the pitch from whence he came.

The farcical scenes continued as the player, realising he was now back off the field, gingerly motioned to return as another of his,h - a substitute - assisted in placing him on the pitch once more.

By this point Botafogo players had run over to confront their opponents for handling their fallen colleague, with the referee forced to intervene to ensure tensions did not completely spill over.

Fernando Diniz's Fluminense had fallen behind at the Maracana Stadium to Marlon Freitas's third-minute opener in a meeting of sides separated by four points.

Rai doubled the visitor's advantage in the 15th minute before Lele halved the deficit before the half hour mark ahead of John Kennedy's equaliser in the 86th minute.

Freitas grabbed his second from the spot in the 90th minute before the chaos ensued on Sunday evening and Emerson Lima Freitas completed the impressive win in the 13th minute of a lengthy period of stoppage time.
