00:02 - Welcome to Style Solutions.
00:09 My name's Marina Lisht,
00:10 I'm the associate editor of nationalwattle.com,
00:13 and as ever I'm joined by Natalie Dixon,
00:15 Lifestyle Reporter.
00:16 Welcome Natalie.
00:18 - Thank you.
00:19 - So today is, I would say it's Natalie's hot topic.
00:24 She is the expert, but I will start talking about it
00:29 and it is none other than hair trends
00:33 and products that you need
00:36 or that would help you achieve that trend.
00:39 So I know we've spoken about hair trends before Natalie,
00:43 but these are different hair trends
00:45 and I'm quite excited by them.
00:47 So the one I'm most excited about is,
00:51 and sort of grabs me, is the Roncon Bob.
00:55 So just the name of it alone,
00:59 I'm thinking, wow, Roncon Bob.
01:01 What is it Natalie?
01:03 Tell us exactly what the Roncon Bob is
01:07 and which celebrities are currently sporting
01:11 the Roncon Bob.
01:13 - The Roncon Bob is originally from the sort of
01:16 the 90s, naughty, early noughties Roncons.
01:20 We all loved the films,
01:21 Reese Witherspoon in "Sweet Home Alabama"
01:24 and "10 Things I Hate About You".
01:27 I think it was Gabrielle Union.
01:29 She was rocking the Bob then.
01:32 Basically it's a short haircut.
01:34 So if you sort of feeling like you'd want to be brave
01:38 and get a chop,
01:39 then it's kind of cut more sort of to the jawline.
01:43 It's pretty much all, not quite one length
01:46 'cause you'd end up a bit boxy.
01:48 So it's just tapered in at the ends
01:52 and then it's really easy to maintain
01:54 'cause you literally wash, dry it
01:56 and you can have a little bit of texture.
01:58 So yeah, it's think of Reese Witherspoon, early noughties
02:03 and that's kind of what you're gonna get.
02:05 - Okay, so just elaborate a bit more.
02:10 You know, you said it was easy to maintain.
02:13 - Yeah.
02:13 - When you say it's easy to maintain,
02:15 so what you don't need sort of minimal styling products?
02:18 - Yeah, so it's basically 'cause as long as you get
02:22 a good haircut,
02:23 then it should be really, really easy to maintain.
02:26 Obviously, if you've got really, really naturally curly hair
02:29 it's probably not gonna be the look for you.
02:30 But if you have a natural sort of wave to your hair
02:33 that you pretty much just dry
02:36 and it'll smooth out with some straighteners,
02:38 then yeah, I would probably say styling terms,
02:42 you wanna just kind of,
02:43 'cause you will be using heated appliances
02:46 before you put the hair dryer on it,
02:49 so on damp hair to spray some heat protection
02:53 and then dry it, straighteners,
02:56 just to smooth it and bring it in
02:58 so it just tucks neatly under.
03:00 And then to finish,
03:02 'cause you want a little bit of that texture,
03:04 you just want a texturizing cream,
03:06 not really a serum, more of a cream base,
03:10 just to kind of run it through
03:12 and just sort of give the ends a little bit
03:13 of texture through there.
03:16 - Right, so let's move on from the Roncon Bob.
03:20 Right, so I think everyone's heard about the lob,
03:23 but maybe I'll need to describe what a lob is.
03:25 But what we're specifically talking about
03:28 on Style Solutions today is the stretched lob.
03:32 So first of all, Natalie,
03:34 can you, do you mind just explaining to viewers
03:36 what the lob is and then sort of elaborating
03:40 on the stretched lob?
03:41 And I think we were talking about this before,
03:43 I think Alexa Chung epitomizes the stretched lob,
03:47 if I'm right at the moment, Natalie?
03:49 - Yeah, yeah.
03:50 She's, it's Alexa Chung through and through.
03:53 She's been rocking the lob and versions of it
03:56 for years now.
03:57 Basically, the lob is a long bob.
04:01 So whereas you think of like the Roncon Bob
04:03 or Italian Bob, French Bob,
04:05 all these different names for bobs at the minute,
04:07 they're all kind of jaw length or just slightly lower.
04:11 A lob is quite sort of similar to my length haircut.
04:15 So it's just sort of sits just above the collarbone,
04:18 whereas a stretched lob is probably about an inch,
04:21 slightly longer, so that it's kind of all one length haircut
04:26 just below the collarbone.
04:28 And the way that you style it is you dry it
04:31 and you will wave it rather than curling it
04:35 with some straightening irons.
04:37 And then so that then when you run your hands
04:41 through your waves and just let it drop a bit,
04:44 it will then sit slightly longer than a lob.
04:48 So it's going to sit more,
04:50 as wavy hair obviously jumps up,
04:51 it'll sit more just on your collarbone, just below it.
04:55 - So do you have to have wavy hair for this look,
04:57 for the stretch lob?
04:58 - No, not at all.
05:00 You can have, I mean, naturally I've got sort of straight,
05:03 slightly kinky hair.
05:06 And then what I would tend to do is I would wash it,
05:10 dry it, and then with the straighteners,
05:12 instead of curling your hair, you kind of,
05:16 I should have got straighteners to show you,
05:18 but you would turn it sort of round and down.
05:21 With waves, you can kind of put them in
05:24 and then just kind of almost see-saw it through your hair.
05:27 So that if you do that on a couple of sections,
05:30 once you pull your fingers through it,
05:31 it'll all break up and look like a natural wave.
05:34 - Now the question I want to know, Natalie,
05:37 have I got a stretch lob or is it not quite a stretch lob?
05:41 - Yeah, I'd probably say so, actually.
05:42 If you were to sort of just straighten through those ends,
05:46 you're probably going to get about an inch.
05:49 So yeah, you could definitely wave it.
05:51 - So I've got the stretch lob and I didn't even know it.
05:56 - There you go, you're a bang on trend.
05:57 (Natalie laughs)
06:00 - That's good to know, 'cause yeah,
06:03 it can be a bit much, all these lobs, bobs,
06:06 and now stretch lobs, but thank you for clarifying that,
06:10 because I think it can be kind of overwhelming.
06:13 - Yeah, there are so many different words,
06:15 but they're all kind of just a slightly tweaked version
06:18 of each other.
06:19 - Right, so now we're going to go on.
06:22 So we've done the rom-com bob, we've done the stretch lob,
06:25 and now we're going to be talking about strawberry blondes.
06:29 So I've got the idea in my head.
06:31 I think I know what a strawberry blonde is,
06:32 but Natalie, maybe you can talk through
06:35 in a bit more detail about that, the exact color.
06:39 - So the exact color is a sort of a toned down blonde,
06:44 a little bit richer than a sort of golden blonde.
06:47 When I think of golden blondes nowadays,
06:49 I think of like Adele,
06:50 she's got a really nice golden-y sort of tone.
06:53 Whereas you want to start thinking
06:56 a little bit richer than that,
06:57 a little bit more oomph of the sort of red tones,
07:00 which is more sort of Nicole Kidman.
07:02 She's, I think, quite a natural sort of redhead anyway,
07:06 but rather than being a true redhead like Emma Stone,
07:10 where it's really rich, dark, and quite in your face,
07:14 the strawberry blonde is kind of more of a blonde
07:18 with a hint of red in sort of different lights.
07:21 So it's really good for anybody that has blonde hair,
07:24 like me, like really bleached,
07:26 that just wants to tone it down and stop using bleach.
07:29 However, it is a lot more maintenance
07:32 if you have blonde bleached hair,
07:34 because your bleached hair is naturally drier
07:36 and it doesn't hold as much colour.
07:38 And because it's only a slight bit of tone,
07:41 you'd probably need to sort of have it done
07:43 a couple of times for the first few,
07:45 and then it'll start sticking into your hair.
07:47 - Interesting.
07:49 So I think a few weeks ago, Natalie,
07:51 we talked about the expensive blonde look,
07:54 and now we're going to be talking about
07:56 the expensive brunette look.
07:59 And I am, of course, the brunette,
08:00 you're blonde, Natalie, aren't I?
08:03 - Absolutely.
08:04 - So I obviously love this kind of expensive brunette look,
08:10 but whenever I hear the word expensive,
08:14 obviously my ears prick up and think,
08:16 well, you know, if it's expensive brunette,
08:19 people are going to be put off
08:20 because it's going to cost a lot.
08:22 Is that right?
08:24 - No, not at all.
08:25 It's just a name.
08:26 It's just so that you literally look at somebody's
08:29 rich chocolate brown hair that looks healthy and glossy
08:34 and go, oh my gosh, that must be an expensive hairdo
08:38 because it looks so amazing.
08:40 It's more the sort of the maintenance
08:42 and looking after your hair that gives it
08:44 that sort of absolute beautiful shine.
08:47 But yeah, I think all the celebrities tend,
08:50 at the minute, seem like they're going sort of darker
08:52 and a little bit more towards their natural color.
08:55 If you are naturally dark,
08:57 or then it's a great color to sort of condition your hair
09:01 and make sure that it's true to sort of
09:03 your natural sort of skin color.
09:05 But yeah, it's definitely a good, good look,
09:10 but it doesn't actually cost that much money.
09:12 Just make sure that you're looking after it at home.
09:15 Then, you know, you probably end up not going
09:18 to the salon as often, so it will actually save you money.
09:21 - And the celebrity I'm thinking about at the moment
09:23 that's sporting that sort of expensive brunette look,
09:26 and I don't know whether you agree with me, Natalie,
09:28 is Hailey Bieber.
09:30 - Yeah.
09:32 She looks amazing.
09:34 I mean, I prefer her with the bob
09:37 than the extensions at the minute, but yeah.
09:39 - Same, I don't know.
09:41 - Her color is exactly that.
09:43 It's rich, chocolatey sort of tone
09:46 that just looks shiny and super healthy.
09:49 So that is exactly what I would say
09:51 is the expensive brunette look.
09:55 - So before we finished today on Style Solutions,
09:58 I just wouldn't mind spending just a couple of minutes,
10:01 Natalie, just talking about hair products
10:04 and ways to get your hair into great condition.
10:07 Because I have to be honest with you,
10:08 and I was discussing this with Natalie
10:10 just only moments before we started on the show today,
10:13 I came late, not necessarily, well, actually,
10:16 to hair products and to looking after one's hair.
10:20 Because I did have a bit of, I would say,
10:22 a hair disaster a couple of years ago.
10:24 I decided for some, I don't know, whatever reason,
10:28 you know, you like to make a change, and I went blonder.
10:32 And it's only when I looked in photographs of my hair,
10:34 not only did I dislike the color,
10:36 but the condition of my hair looked absolutely awful.
10:41 So not only did I decide to go back
10:44 to a more darker brunette shade,
10:48 but I decided to sort of make a change in my hair routine.
10:53 So with products and hair masks.
10:55 And I really think that they can make a huge difference
10:59 sort of spending a bit of time,
11:02 either once or twice a week with a hair mask.
11:05 And Natalie, you are the expert,
11:07 so I'm gonna hand that over to you now.
11:09 - Thank you.
11:11 It's funny because I used to be,
11:14 even when I was hairdresser,
11:15 and I used to be exactly the same,
11:16 I didn't like the feel of tackiness
11:18 or stickiness in my hair.
11:20 So I would kind of stay as minimal use of products
11:25 that I could, and I probably still stick with that now.
11:28 The things that I mainly sort of recommend and focus on
11:32 are a good shampoo and conditioner daily or every other day.
11:37 Especially with, I think a lot of people make the mistake
11:40 with colored hair, is that they will buy
11:42 a color-saving shampoo and conditioner.
11:46 And I think if you have dry hair
11:49 or you've had previously bleached or highlighted hair,
11:52 your hair's more likely to be dry and damaged.
11:54 So what you need to do is fix that problem,
11:58 and therefore your color will last longer.
12:00 So if you have colored hair, then, and it's slightly drier,
12:04 instead of going for color-saving shampoo and conditioner,
12:07 always look for something that's more moisturizing
12:09 and hydrating to fix that problem,
12:12 and then your condition will look a lot better.
12:14 When it comes to treatments,
12:17 I'm probably the same as you,
12:20 probably sort of one, two treatments a week.
12:23 I'm a massive fan of Olaplex.
12:26 I don't think, even with, I think there's different ones,
12:30 K18 that have brought their own out.
12:32 All the different brands have brought their own version,
12:36 but I think Olaplex is still the number one
12:39 compared to anybody else.
12:42 For fixing your hair on the inside, it's not,
12:45 if anybody's ever used Olaplex
12:47 and think that it's gonna give them super soft-feeling hair,
12:50 it's not that.
12:51 It works on the inside of your hair
12:53 rather than on the outside.
12:54 So you'd probably do an Olaplex treatment
12:58 and then do a conditioning mask as well.
13:00 That's where I think some people also get that wrong.
13:03 And then when it comes to styling,
13:06 again, I think that a lot of people think
13:08 that they would use a heat protection spray
13:13 before they use straighteners,
13:15 but actually that's where you end up
13:17 with feeling of stickiness and tackiness in your hair.
13:20 So what you wanna do is spray it generously
13:23 before you dry your hair.
13:25 And then once it's in your hair, that's it.
13:27 Then it will protect against the hairdryer heat
13:29 and the straightening heat.
13:31 And then just to finish,
13:32 you're gonna probably have to test around
13:37 for what you find you personally like.
13:39 I love, and I've always used it,
13:42 a system professional Wella Luxe Oil Serum.
13:47 I love the smell of it.
13:49 I love everything about it.
13:50 It's great for my hair
13:51 because my hair is naturally a finer texture.
13:55 So I struggle with some sort of serums.
13:58 I think they can end up feeling gloopy and oily,
14:01 whereas this one just completely melts into your hair
14:04 and leaves it feeling amazing.
14:06 They're my top go-to products.
14:09 - Well, thanks Natalie as ever
14:11 for joining me today on Style Solutions.
14:14 And I look forward to talking to you next week
14:16 about a different subject.
14:19 Thank you.
14:20 - Thank you.
