Foreign Secretary says Russia sanctions 'have had an effect'

Lord Cameron said the sanctions against Russia "have had an effect" on the Russian economy as they are struggling to get access "to some key technologies." Mr Cameron was speaking to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on the eve of the second anniversary of the invasion where he warned of the consequences of withdrawing support for Ukraine.

It comes as both the US and the UK have announced new sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

00:00 I think the sanctions do two things. First of all, there are those specific sanctions against the people that we hold accountable for Alexei Navalny's death.
00:07 And I think that's important that when these appalling human rights abuses take place that we act.
00:12 On the Russian economy, I think the sanctions have had an effect. They are struggling to get some of the key technologies, some of the things that they need.
00:19 But crucially, what we've got to do is follow this pattern around the world, because any country that is supplying dual-use goods to Russia,
00:27 we need to make sure we're prepared to sanction companies in those countries, as we've done when it comes to China or Turkey or Central Asian republics or elsewhere.
00:36 Absolutely important we really do the work.
00:38 I appeal very directly here in the US that this isn't just about Ukrainian security or European security.
00:44 This is fundamentally about US security too.
00:47 That if we allow this brutal dictator in Europe to redraw boundaries by force, to invade other countries and to get away with it, no country will be safe.
00:56 And we know from our history that if we allow that to happen, the cost when we eventually have to intervene and stop them is so much greater.
