Effective next month, a total of 35,000 taxi drivers and 18,000 school bus drivers in the country will benefit from Social Security Organisation (Socso) subscriptions which will be paid fully by the government.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke told reporters that on Friday (Feb 23), and said 90 per cent of their Socso subscription will be borne through an allocation from the Finance Ministry, while the Transport Ministry is paying the remaining 10 per cent for one year.
The move, Loke said, was to provide social protection to taxi and school bus drivers in the event of an accident.

00:00 Can you elaborate on the tax on buses, taxis and taxis?
00:05 Yes, yesterday I had a discussion with the head of the executive office of Pekeso
00:10 and we understood that the Ministry of Finance has given a fund to Pekeso
00:18 worth RM100 million to cover up to 90%
00:24 for taxi drivers, e-heeling, p-heeling and so on
00:30 But even though it's 90%, 10% of it needs to be covered by the driver himself
00:38 So we see that when it's not 100% covered, there are those who may not cover it
00:45 because they need to come register and pay that 10%
00:50 So for the taxi drivers, we will cover that additional 10%
00:58 Meaning that 90% of the fund will be topped up by the Ministry of Transport
01:07 So it means that taxi drivers and school bus drivers
01:13 don't need to cover even a cent for a year
01:17 They only need to register their names
01:21 and if they have registered their names, we will give them a slip of their ID
01:28 So this means that for these drivers, with a top up of 10% from the Ministry of Transport
01:36 they don't need to pay a cent
01:39 So this is an effort to provide social protection to them
01:45 because this is very important, especially to the drivers
01:49 because if there is an accident, this is a shield to them
01:55 a social protection to them and their families
02:02 So this top up is very important and critical to us
02:07 and that's why we give priority to top up the drivers
02:12 We have discussed with Pekeso
02:18 I have asked APAD to provide a list of taxi drivers databases to Pekeso
02:26 They also have their own databases so that the database can be matched
02:30 and we expect that in March, we will be able to launch this initiative
02:36 This means that we will cover and they will be protected
02:39 For now, this is a yearly initiative
02:43 12 months, it is expected that next year, if there is a financial crisis
02:51 we hope that this initiative can be continued
02:53 Taxi drivers alone are estimated to be more than 35,000
03:01 School bus is estimated to be around 18,000
03:07 School bus driver is estimated to be around 18,000
03:10 Taxi driver is estimated to be around 35,000
03:13 That's our database
