00:00 [speaking Spanish]
00:01 I want a clean fight.
00:02 [speaking Spanish]
00:03 Obey my commands at all times.
00:05 [speaking Spanish]
00:06 And protect yourself at all times.
00:08 [speaking Spanish]
00:09 Trunks are good.
00:10 [speaking Spanish]
00:11 Eurice Deños rove as he goes over to his brother, Henry,
00:17 who he sparred as late as last week.
00:21 It said, "Te amo, papi."
00:23 And that means, "I love you, dad,"
00:25 because his father, Aquino, died when he was 15 years old.
00:29 He was left without his coach, without his mentor,
00:32 but he says, "I do this in honor of my father,"
00:35 who once guided Javier Fortuna to the featherweight world title.
00:40 So he knew how to make champions.
00:41 He created two fighters.
00:43 Eurice Deños, unbeaten, 7-0-1.
00:45 His brother is 12-0 with 10 knockouts as a pro.
00:50 You know, when I saw his name on the card,
00:53 I started learning about his history.
00:55 So Deños, he's a guy that I was looking forward to seeing.
01:00 You know, first off, just looking at him,
01:03 good stature, tall, looks strong.
01:06 He's a southpaw, which makes it a little bit more difficult
01:10 for orthodox fighters,
01:12 and he has a ton of amateur experience.
01:15 400-plus fights for this southpaw,
01:18 who, along with his brother,
01:20 participated in the Lima-Pan Am Games.
01:22 I was there covering boxing,
01:24 and the Dominican Republic has really grown.
01:27 His loss was to Arlon López of Cuba.
01:29 You see a good combination, and he says,
01:31 "My trainer, once my father passed away,
01:34 was Cuban native Armando Hernández."
01:36 And what happened there, Tim, and you see that
01:38 with the current crop of young Dominican fighters coming up,
01:41 he says, "We got that great lineage of Dominican fighting
01:44 with that school of Cuban boxing,"
01:46 and that's a great combination coming up.
01:48 Yes, it is, and you can tell just by the angles he's using.
01:51 Set to set up his left hand and his right hook.
01:55 Moving side to side.
01:57 It looks like he has really good eyes.
02:00 Doesn't mind being comfortable.
02:02 You know, doesn't mind actually occupying
02:04 or taking the space mid-range.
02:06 Enjoys being close to his opponent.
02:09 You know, with the Cuban style, they're great counterpunches,
02:12 but a lot of them are not really aggressive.
02:14 They're aggressive when they need to be.
02:16 However, Cedeno likes to fight on the front foot a bit.
02:20 [crowd noise]
02:25 Nice counter left from Cedeno, and then he follows it up.
02:28 He's on him.
02:29 Three in a row.
02:30 Wow.
02:31 I mean, how many times you got to get with the left
02:32 to know that you need to move your head one
02:34 or pick your guard up.
02:36 That's what happened to Adelo Mason's opponent last week.
02:39 Well, that was actually set up beautifully by Adelo Mason.
02:43 And he had already been dropped.
02:44 Yes.
02:46 Yes.
02:47 Nice short right hook now from Cedeno,
02:49 showing that he's got more to his arsenal.
02:51 And Antonio Todd is looking at that clock.
02:54 There's 45 seconds left here in this first round.
02:57 This fight is not competitive at all.
02:59 I think the referees are going to have to step in sooner or later.
03:03 You know, but this is professional boxing.
03:05 You know, eight counts only happen when there's a knockdown.
03:08 But Todd continuously getting hit with these big shots,
03:11 not moving his head, and really not--
03:12 don't have a whole lot of offense.
03:14 You see his arm punching right there, reaching as well.
03:16 Ooh, there's that straight left once again from Eury Cedeno.
03:20 Yesterday, after the weigh-in, I saw Eury and his brother Henry
03:23 walking down 8th Avenue, Tim, in shorts and flip-flops.
03:27 They're from the Dominican Republic.
03:29 They're supposed to be freezing.
03:30 Yeah, they're supposed to be.
03:31 He lives in Reading, Pennsylvania.
03:32 Oh, that's what it is.
03:33 That explains it.
03:35 [bell dings]
03:37 [applause]
03:40 Let's listen in to Daniel Guerrero in the corner of Cedeno.
03:44 He takes a good shot, right?
03:46 Give me some water.
03:48 [music]
03:54 Give me the towel.
03:56 [music]
04:01 Everything's good.
04:03 Hey, we're going to work that body.
04:05 If you go to the body, he's going to go down.
04:09 Absolutely.
04:10 That's where you're supposed to go.
04:11 But great work right here from Cedeno.
04:13 Look how he got his head outside.
04:16 The lead foot.
04:17 Putting himself in good position to be able to land that straight left hand.
04:21 Here he is again, off the jab.
04:24 See his opponent bagging out.
04:26 Throws exactly where he thought his opponent was going to be.
04:29 He didn't throw at the target.
04:30 He threw where he was going to be.
04:31 He saw Todd moving out, trying to get away.
04:35 And he lands that straight backhand.
04:37 Getting that close-up shot of Eury Cedeno.
04:39 You see that tattoo of the Olympic rings on his neck.
04:43 He said, "I only have two other tattoos.
04:45 The one on my right leg is the year of my birth, 1999.
04:48 The one on my left leg is 2015, the year my father passed away."
04:55 The southpaw advantage is that they're used to the angles coming from the orthodox.
04:59 That's what their advantages are.
05:01 An orthodox fighter can do the same thing, if not similar to a southpaw, vice versa.
05:08 However, orthodox fighters are not used to fighting southpaws.
05:11 That's why you've got to get comfortable.
05:13 I would advise all the young fighters out there, spar southpaws on a consistent basis.
05:19 Each of them are a little bit different, but the rules stay the same.
05:23 Getting your foot placed on the outside, you don't necessarily have to force it,
05:26 because if you force it, it becomes predictable, and the southpaw will be able to read it.
05:30 However, getting that foot on the outside, having lead hand control as well,
05:34 keeping your hand on top of his lead hand, and trying to land your backhand and your left hook.
05:39 Right now, you see Cedeno just going to work.
05:42 Don't let him hit you five times in a row.
05:45 The shots are slowly breaking down, Todd.
05:49 Todd is taking them well, but if Cedeno was to go down to that body now, that's different.
05:54 He'll be able to weaken him a little bit more, get those hands dropped even more,
05:58 and he can soften them up and then possibly take them out later in the fight.
06:01 He's been durable. He went eight rounds with Troy Isley in July of 2023,
06:06 so if Cedeno's able to look sharper than Isley,
06:11 then that really tells you something about this Dominican fighter and where he's headed.
06:16 Nice right. That's a stiff jab as Todd was trying to find an angle.
06:23 See, Todd is just outgunned. He's outgunned.
06:26 Not much coming on his punches, not much heat coming on his punches.
06:29 He's trying, but the defensive prowess right now of Cedeno is a little bit too much.
06:34 Great angles as well.
06:36 I saw Todd also turn southpaw trying to switch things up, but it didn't go too well from that stance either.
06:42 That's a nice jab once again from Cedeno. Body work with the right.
06:51 Not really listening about going down to the body, going headhunting.
06:55 I mean you get used to that. I mean you have a long and stitched amateur career like Cedeno did.
07:00 You're going to throw punches at the head because you really don't get points or credit when you go down to the body in the amateurs.
07:11 That's why a lot of times, you know, once a fighter makes that transition from the amateurs to the pros,
07:17 we talk about how some fighters have that pro style as amateurs and some bring that amateur style into the pros.
07:24 Seven fights yet to come here on Top Rank Boxing on ESPN+.
07:43 The Olympian Tiger Johnson steps up against Brazilian Paulo Galdino.
07:48 And then we're going to have New Yorker Ofacio Falcón put his 10-0 record on the line against Edward Ceballos from Phoenix, Arizona.
07:58 Isa Flaherty from Elmont, New York. He's also unbeaten so far.
08:03 He's going to take on Amesbury, Massachusetts' own Julian Baptiste.
08:08 And then the heavyweight action, Guido Vianello closes out our ESPN+ card, taking on Moses "Thunderhands" Johnson.
08:16 That'll be right before we move over to ESPN at 9 Eastern.
08:20 There is Tiger Johnson working with Prentice Brewer for the fifth time as his lead trainer.
08:27 And Tim, there's a reason he's number three on your double stamp prospect list.
08:31 And he impressed me last time out. He was matched extremely tough.
08:34 I would say out of all the prospects, he's one of the ones that's been matched. He's been challenged.
08:38 And it's showing. But he knows that he has to continue to improve.
08:41 And he's showing that each and every time he steps foot in that ring.
08:45 I'm curious to see what I'm going to see this time. What new wrinkle he's going to add to his game in this fight.
08:52 He's facing a southpaw, a tricky southpaw too, at that.
08:54 Absolutely. And three of his last six opponents, as you mentioned, had a 15-1 record.
08:58 So no easy touches for Tiger Johnson.
09:02 You know what? He wouldn't have it any other way.
09:04 But that's going to make him better. Absolutely.
09:06 You know, you got to be battle tested. And then when you get to the top, you can remain at the top.
09:09 You're used to that type of resistance coming at you.
09:12 You know, it's just not the physical also work. It's the mental aspect as well.
09:16 Because you see the record and you're like, oh, OK.
09:18 But when you see a glaring record, like an undefeated record, 23-0, it doesn't bother you as much.
09:24 Yeah, and the fact that, you know, the advancement under, you know, first of all, Ronald Safo, who is a man who trained not only Tiger, but his trainer, PJ Brewer.
09:37 But also the way he's sitting down on his punches and sitting in the pocket more.
09:41 That's what he was talking about. You know, coach, I call him the prophet, honestly.
09:45 You know, was a great, was a pretty decent professional at that.
09:50 You know, had some bumps along the road. However, if he can do it differently, he would.
09:54 However, I think that his calling is coaching. I really do.
09:59 And that's what he's doing with Tiger.
10:02 But to your point, there, he's going to be, he's about to get a lot out of that.
10:06 Right hook, he's going for it.
10:07 But to your point about sitting down on his punches, he said that Tiger needs to take a little bit off the speed.
10:14 Tiger likes to get out of range as well, a lot of the times.
10:17 If he takes a little bit off the speed and just focus on the technique, he can be able to deliver more knockouts.
10:25 So, Daniel is just really relaxed, honestly. It's like a sparring session right now for him.
10:39 Target practice in spots.
10:42 You know, Todd will be here as long as Daniel allows him to be here.
10:47 You know, so Daniel just really taking his time.
10:52 No sense of urgency whatsoever.
10:55 It's still the third round right now.
10:58 But if he wants to have a chance of stopping or hurting Todd, he's going to have to dig down to that body.
11:04 Because Todd can take a punch upstairs.
11:08 I think that's the frustration in the corner with Daniel Garrido telling El Di Sileno, "You got to focus downstairs."
11:13 There's guys that are going to be able to take your best shots to the head, but not many can handle the work downstairs.
11:20 And that's what they want El Di Sileno to focus on here at the end of round number three.
11:27 Tonight's main event on ESPN will feature the second title defense of Oshaki Foster.
11:33 They'll be taking on Abraham "Supernova" Mascott et al.
11:38 [music]
12:05 Nova from upstate New York, Foster from Texas.
12:09 Both world warriors in the past, Tim. Everything at stake for each one.
12:13 You know what? When I saw this card and I saw the headline, I was like, "Whoa, this is a dangerous fight."
12:20 This is a really dangerous fight for both fighters.
12:24 You know, like you said, they bounce back from defeats. Both guys are proving themselves.
12:28 But this is the end of the round.
12:30 You see Cedeno, just target practice again. A lot of bad habits coming from Todd.
12:35 Doesn't really have a full arsenal whatsoever.
12:39 Not really good defensively after he lets his hands go as well.
12:42 And Cedeno, he should get this guy up out of here, man.
12:45 I mean, he has enough time to work a few more rounds to be able to get him up out of there.
12:50 But I'll be impressed if he can get him up out of there, man. I really would.
12:53 He has to make Benji Estovas, the referee, do his job.
12:57 It looked like it was close to coming to an end at the end of the third round.
13:00 Now he's got Antonio Todd on skates. Can he put him on the canvas?
13:05 Nice body work here. Beautiful left uppercut from Eldi Cedeno.
13:10 Just an offensive clinic.
13:12 Look, this is not competitive. The referee needs to step in and do something.
13:16 I mean, I could see if Todd was doing some work here and there,
13:19 but he's not really landed anything significant in this fight so far.
13:23 And it's all going downhill for Todd right now.
13:26 Yeah, Eldi Cedeno just looking for that one shot that will end this fight.
13:31 And you see the blood coming out of the mouth of Antonio Todd,
13:35 unable to do much in there tonight against the Southpaw Dominican,
13:39 who represented his country in the Tokyo Olympics
13:43 and continues to do so with pride inside the ring.
13:47 One thing you can't deny Todd, durability is unbelievable.
13:54 And his ability to take a shot.
13:56 Lost to Anthony Sims, Joseph Hicks, Troy Isley.
14:03 You know, his last four losses, Tim, his opponents had a combined record of 52-0 and 1.
14:09 So you talk about durability, you talk about heart, Todd has it in spades.
14:13 Yeah.
14:15 But sometimes it's the job of the corner and the referee to protect a fighter from himself.
14:20 He's taking some straight, hard shots.
14:22 What is he here for? Is he here to win, or is he here for pride, or is he here for the bag?
14:26 He's here for the bag. I mean, he's outgunned.
14:29 He's cutting Eldi with a right eye.
14:31 Bleeding out of the mouth.
14:33 Again, hasn't landed anything significant whatsoever.
14:36 I mean, it's going to go downhill from here on.
14:39 There's that straight left once again from Eldi Cedeno.
14:46 And these are clean punches. And it's also telling the story as well.
14:50 It's a Daniel punch. Is he a real puncher? No, he's not.
14:53 He's more of a break you down type of guy.
14:55 And Tim, he started his career 5-0, 5 knockouts.
14:59 And he's tote 2-0 and 1, had that draw in between with one knockout.
15:04 So as the level of opposition has increased, his punching power has seen a decrease.
15:10 You know, I'm curious to hear about that draw.
15:12 You know, we didn't get a chance to talk to him in the fighter meetings,
15:14 but I'm curious to hear what was the excuse of that draw.
15:17 When you have as much skill and as much knowledge as Cedeno,
15:22 you shouldn't have a draw on your resume this early, man. You shouldn't.
15:27 Ooh, nice overhand right once again from Eldi Cedeno.
15:33 We're going to hear the bell and listen to the corners.
15:36 See what they're telling Antonio Todd here through four rounds.
15:41 Benji Estevez asks, "You want me to stop this fight?"
15:44 Man, stop the fight.
15:45 We good, coach. We good. I'll tell you, but I think we good.
15:48 No, we good. No, no. We good to go. No, we good.
15:52 Why are you asking?
15:53 No, we good to go. We good to go.
15:55 How you feel? It ain't bothering you?
15:58 No.
15:59 No, you're snowsleeved. That's it. We good.
16:01 Look, but you can't stand in front door, kid.
16:04 Yeah. We good. We good.
16:10 You're under control. Let me get you some water.
16:15 Bro, he's loaded up, but you see him on the way.
16:17 It's some good work right here from Cedeno.
16:20 Just putting the combination together.
16:22 I had this man right here bewildered.
16:24 Just coming forward. It's simple. It's target practice.
16:28 I mean, Todd don't have really any firepower coming back at him, Bernardo.
16:32 I mean, there's nothing he has to worry about on the receiving end.
16:36 So, I mean, he can let his hands go and try to finish this fight.
16:39 And I think that Benji Estevez, the third man in the ring, is going to have them on a short leash here.
16:45 But Estevez, I mean, why do you have to ask the corner?
16:50 It's your job.
16:51 It's your job. That's the ref's job. The ref's job is the safety of the fighter.
16:55 That is ultimately the ref's job.
16:57 There's that straight left once again from Elry Cedeno.
17:01 He set that up with a nice little level change right there to come around with the left hand or the right hook.
17:07 Then the left hand down the middle.
17:09 Some clever stuff from Cedeno, but I mean, I see a lot of holes in his game as well.
17:13 And, again, he's not feeling any type of resistance coming back at him.
17:17 So, you know, fighters, we'll make mistakes if we don't feel fear.
17:21 We'll do whatever we want. We will get in terrible positions.
17:24 But you've got to stay disciplined with your craft.
17:27 That's the important part because moving forward, it becomes a habit in there.
17:31 You know, if you continue to do this over and over and fight in this level of competition.
17:34 So, it's important moving forward.
17:37 Cedeno, we know he got this win unless something crazy happens.
17:40 But he needs to get more disciplined with his craft.
17:44 We talk about these young fighters who go through and blow by so many fighters early on in their careers.
17:50 And then when they face the minimal resistance, all of a sudden they're bewildered.
17:54 They're not used to it.
17:55 And that's the opposite case in our next fight with Tiger who has had tough fights, tough opposition.
18:02 Who have asked questions of him early and that prepares him later on for his career as you mentioned earlier.
18:07 You're absolutely right.
18:10 And there is Tiger Johnson.
18:13 That young man went to the Olympics, has a great group of coaches behind him.
18:19 Two voices that have the same mind, Tim, from the ground up.
18:24 Look, Stafo is who built PJ. Think about that.
18:27 Now, he has this young pugilist who is PJ.
18:30 Now, Tiger who is listening to his direction.
18:33 But both of you know it's a team effort, no doubt about it.
18:36 But man, it's great to see.
18:38 And then the lack of ego from Renard Stafo to say, "Hey, you know what?
18:41 If you have such a great relationship with Tiger, PJ, why don't you train him?"
18:46 And I'm just going to chime in here and there and try to give you my thoughts and my experience.
18:52 And I think it's building a great team.
18:54 And when you've got a race car like Tiger that can go, it just makes for a wonderful situation.
19:00 Agreed.
19:02 Even Tiger agrees.
19:05 Yeah, I do.
19:06 You know, Tiger, what I love about Tiger is that he's optimistic and he likes to learn.
19:13 The fight's over.
19:14 Good.
19:15 Good.
19:16 That's it.
19:17 Good.
19:18 Elrinkse Daniel gets his seventh stoppage and he wins.
19:22 Antonio Todd, he's willing to continue fighting.
19:25 He's willing to take punishment.
19:26 Of course.
19:27 He took Troy Isley the distance in July of 2023.
19:30 But this is the job of the referee.
19:32 If the corner won't save a fighter from himself, he has to do it.
19:36 And that's what Benji Estevez finally stepped in with 2 minutes and 39 seconds left.
19:40 This isn't about being the tough guy.
19:41 I mean, of course you've got to be tough inside the ring, but you're just taking unnecessary damage like that.
19:46 I mean, shot after shot.
19:48 And you're not doing anything in return.
19:50 I mean, if a guy hit me, I'm going to hit him back.
19:52 And I'm going to try.
19:53 And body language right there, I mean, he's comfortable.
19:56 Todd is used to this type of beating.
19:57 You can tell.
19:58 He's used to it.
19:59 His corner said, "I know how much he can take."
20:01 But at the same time, it's unnecessary damage, man.
20:04 What are you really here for?
20:05 Are you here to win?
20:06 Because you're not showing.
20:07 You know, it's not like this guy is supremely skilled, too skilled that you can't hit him.
20:12 Yes, you can hit him.
20:13 You've got to try.
20:14 You've got to want it.
20:15 However, what?
20:16 What happens?
20:18 I mean, body language tells a story, man.
20:20 He's just here to get the paycheck.
20:22 Go ahead and get it, my man.
20:23 And the most important thing for Antonio Todd, even though he's upset, is he'll get to go home to his son.
20:29 Yes.
20:30 And that's the most important thing at the end of the night.
20:32 Thank you very much.
20:33 Absolutely.
20:34 He came in, and he does--and he did what he always does.
20:38 He puts up resistance.
20:39 And you know what else?
20:40 He don't--now he don't have to say, "Oh, I got knocked out."
20:45 No, the referee stopped him.
20:46 I got stopped.
20:47 The referee stopped him.
20:48 I didn't want to stop.
20:49 So he can freely say that.
20:52 I mean, it's the ego of a fighter.
20:54 You know that, Tim.
20:55 It's like it's one thing to go out on your back and say, "I want to go out on my shield,"
20:59 but that's not always necessary when it's this clear of a fight.
21:02 Yeah, it's not always necessary.
21:04 And I'm glad referee, you know, stepped in and did the right thing to stop this action.
21:09 There is the mentioned referee, Benji Estevez.
21:14 Benji.
21:15 Let's send it up to Marc Chinook for the time of the stoppage.
21:18 Ladies and gentlemen, here inside the theater at Madison Square Garden,
21:21 referee Benji Estevez calls a halt to this bout at 2 minutes, 39 seconds of round number 5.
21:29 Declaring your winner by technical knockout,
21:32 Yuri "La Bazooka" Sedeño.
21:38 Yuri Sedeño continues his winning streak,
21:42 now reaching three after.
