00:00 I'm gonna call it good. Anything right here. I'm gonna call it good.
00:03 Stay off the back of the heads, obey the commands at all times, protect yourselves all the time.
00:06 Protect yourself at all times. Touch gloves and let's go.
00:10 Arnold Gonzalez out of Harlem, New York. Said it's tough being away from loved ones, training in LA with Julian Chua.
00:19 But there's also adversity of being in Harlem, New York. So now he has the best of both worlds.
00:24 Got to train on the West Coast. Gets to fight in front of his hometown fans.
00:29 Bernardo Osuna alongside Mark Crego here inside the theater at MSG.
00:34 Gonzalez trained by Julian Chua, one of the rising trainers in the sport today.
00:39 Last time we saw Julian Chua, he was here with Jose Zepeda. One punch knockout.
00:46 So there's already been more than one punch so far. So Gonzalez has his work cut out for him.
00:58 I spoke to Julian, he just got off the plane. I said, "What do you want to see from Arnold?"
01:04 He said, "Arnold has a great jab. I know he can establish a jab. I know he can win with the jab.
01:10 I want to see what comes after that. If he wants to move on, he's got to show me the right hand. He's got to show me the left hook."
01:16 And we started off with that left hook to the head of Stanford. Followed it up precisely with that right hand.
01:21 So he did it in the opposite that Julian wanted to see it, but he did it nonetheless.
01:27 Don't hold, don't hold.
01:29 Stanford is a former MMA fighter with an 8 and 11 record.
01:36 Got into boxing because he had anger management issues and wanted to be a good example to his children.
01:44 He said, "I had issues with alcohol and connecting with people and the gym allowed me to find a brotherhood that I never felt before."
01:53 Nice left hook there from Stanford, but a counter right from Gonzalez.
01:57 Looked like he wanted to give Gonzalez something he never felt before.
02:17 There's that jab that Julian mentioned. Gonzalez knows how to throw well, but there's a little bit of a forearm shiver behind that.
02:27 If Stanford's the opponent here, he didn't get the memo.
02:29 Nice fighter using his height so far. 3 1/2 inch reach advantage for Charles Stanford.
02:40 3 inch height advantage, so he's trying to keep Gonzalez on the outside, which seems to be a smart proposition for the fighter out of Cincinnati, Ohio.
02:49 Not sure what Arnold's waiting for.
03:05 [Fighting sounds]
03:08 Stanford says, "You want to wait? I'm going to throw this overhand right."
03:14 It's funny, I would have told him to jab more this round.
03:21 [Laughter]
03:22 You got to watch what you ask for. Sometimes these fighters listen too well. Sometimes they don't listen at all.
03:30 Let's listen to Julian Cuin hear what his instructions would be for Arnold Gonzalez leading into the second round.
03:36 [Music]
04:02 Mark, you know Julian Chua very well. One of the up-and-coming trainers in the sport today. Very popular.
04:07 If Julian could teach me the last three rounds, he could teach a lot of other guys to be champions, I'll tell you that.
04:14 But, I know Arnold from the gym as well.
04:19 Here you see him. There goes that left hook.
04:23 Kind of right hook there, but I still think he should have jabbed more.
04:30 Julian showed up years ago because he wanted to be Manny Pacquiao at the Wild Card gym.
04:34 In 2018, Arnold came in from Harlem, showed up at the Wild Card a couple days before Christmas.
04:40 And Manny Pacquiao was training for Adrian Broner.
04:45 Freddie Roach said, "Hey, why don't you hang out here for a couple days? Maybe we can get you some work with Pacquiao."
04:51 He goes, "Really?" So he stayed, he survived, and here we are.
04:56 Yeah, ended up helping him out on the camps for the Keith Thurman fight, and then the Yordanis Ugas fight, which ended up being Manny's last fight for the time being.
05:08 So that first day when he went in with Pacquiao, he was pretty scared, he goes, "I'm going in with my idol."
05:14 But he lasted, and Freddie invited him back. That's why he's here.
05:18 13-0. Not a bad record, but it's time to step up.
05:25 His opportunity doing it in his hometown here in New York.
05:29 He's from Ecuador, had six fights in Ecuador. This is his seventh fight in the United States, also fought one time in Mexico.
05:36 You see the strength of Stanford there with the overhand right.
05:39 One thing that Gonzalez did, and he corrected it earlier, was he's not walking in with that left hand too far down,
05:50 because there was an opportunity that first round for Stanford to come over the top.
05:54 Good, good.
05:55 I understand what Julian said, but I'd still like to see him establish a jab, work off that jab. There we go.
06:08 That was some nice body work from Arnold Gonzalez getting inside on Stanford.
06:19 Stanford sees that opening over the top with the right, but so far Gonzalez is using his reflexes and legs to move out of the way.
06:26 Good feint there from Gonzalez.
06:28 I still feel like Gonzalez hasn't established a sense of distance.
06:34 Got right under that right hand that Stanford had really bad intentions with.
06:45 There's that body work once again from Gonzalez, stands it and Meyers it works a little bit too long and pays the price as Stanford lands a right.
06:53 Couple feints wouldn't hurt either from Gonzalez.
07:00 Nice body work.
07:03 And then a left hook from Stanford once again.
07:06 He's putting in the word being efficient to the body, but that means he's close and he's not getting out quite quickly enough.
07:13 Nice.
07:14 Nice.
07:31 Tonight's main event will feature Oshaki Foster right here in New York City.
07:41 He was an alternate in 2011 and then he was undefeated in his first eight pro fights.
07:48 Things went sideways in his life. He was jailed for four months.
07:52 He lived in temporary FEMA housing after the hurricane and then he hasn't lost since.
07:59 He went to Houston, worked with Bobby Benton as his trainer.
08:04 He won the WBC junior lightweight title against Ray Vargas in San Antonio, Texas.
08:11 And then he defended it against a man named Eduardo Hernandez who he had to defeat in the 12th round.
08:19 It was an amazing fight. 11th round was round of the year.
08:22 So you see the turnaround in the life of Oshaki Foster.
08:25 It hasn't been easy, but he's here to defend his title for the second time and he's doing it in the mecca of boxing here in Madison Square Garden in the theater.
08:34 So what a story Oshaki Foster is.
08:36 We sat down the other day. It was really one of the more extraordinary stories I've ever heard.
08:43 One of the most improbable comebacks.
08:45 I mean, you mentioned that he needed a 12th round knockout to beat Eduardo Hernandez.
08:50 You know, a Mexican fighter in Mexico, that's a pretty tall order.
08:55 I mean, he did it. It's almost like a microcosm of his career.
08:58 Because his entire career at this point has been a comeback.
09:02 Absolutely. And you know what, Mark? We always talk about fighters and knowing where you're fighting.
09:07 And to me, one of the most remarkable things about that comeback victory, apart from the fact that it was open scoring,
09:12 so he knew he was down after the 8th round, was the fact that he says, his corner told him,
09:18 they're going to take this fight from you if you don't go out and knock him out.
09:21 And he went out and did it, became the 14th man to go into the last round, down on a world championship fight,
09:26 and come away with the win.
09:28 You talk about knowing where you're fighting.
09:31 Arnold Gonzalez knows where he's fighting now and I think he's feeling a lot of pressure.
09:36 It's natural, but he's going to have to deal with it.
09:38 You know, this is a homecoming fight for him. It's an audition fight for him.
09:41 It's a lot at stake and I think he's a little bit tight, to tell you the truth.
09:45 As far as Lushaki is concerned, it's just an extraordinary comeback.
09:51 Bobby Benton and Aaron Navarro have been working with him since he was 8 years old.
09:56 And they said, listen man, the most we've seen from this kid is 75% of his talent.
10:01 And if that is in fact the case, he's in for a great ride from 30 years on plus.
10:07 I mean, Tim Bradley talks about him working his way into a pound for pound list
10:12 because he's got the skills to do it now, he's got the mindset to follow up.
10:18 And I think that's one of the things that was missing with Lushaki.
10:20 Fostering to his admission, he says, I was a knucklehead out there on the streets doing bad things.
10:25 So I put myself in that position.
10:27 But once I got myself straightened out in Houston, it's just been a whole different ride.
10:32 Wasn't a straight line to get there.
10:37 By the way, one thing I do want to mention, the flashiest sequence in this whole fight
10:43 was at the end of the second round, was Gonzalez dipping under those punches.
10:49 I thought that was pretty slick.
10:51 Good body work.
10:53 That's been his calling card in this scheduled 6th round.
11:00 A nice right uppercut from Gonzalez.
11:03 He's excelling with those punches that you have to be intimate with.
11:08 That uppercut, that body work.
11:10 You have to be in a danger zone in order to land them.
11:12 He's also willing to lead with a left hook.
11:15 Nice body work from Stanford himself.
11:17 Nice right hand from Charles Stanford.
11:28 Things heat up here at the end of the third round, just like they did when round 2 was coming to a conclusion.
11:35 He shoots everything so wide and predictable.
11:42 I need you to set up some more counter punches.
11:44 Do you understand what I'm saying?
11:46 He has that hard right hand, but he throws it from a mile away.
11:49 You can see it coming.
11:51 Let him left hook though.
11:52 Catch and shoot.
11:53 Let that go right away.
11:54 Do you understand what I'm saying?
11:56 Or hit a little half step back, let him fall in and catch him.
11:59 The left hook to the body mark has been extremely effective for Arnold Gonzalez.
12:03 Here it goes right there, right to the belly.
12:06 Another one.
12:08 Right, left, to the body.
12:20 Right, left, to the body.
12:22 I heard Julian there saying, and you saw it in Stanford through the whole fight,
12:28 he's loading up on those big right hands.
12:31 And he's telling Gonzalez, don't be a target for it, counter it.
12:36 Wait for it, play with it, make it your asset.
12:39 Cruegel, we got a lot of New York fighters here.
12:42 A lot of fighters with New York roots on this fight card, including Shushu Carrington,
12:46 who's graduating from our ESPN Plus cards onto the main championship card tonight.
12:52 You talked about Arnold Gonzalez coming out a little tight,
12:55 fighting in front of his Harlem hometown fans.
12:57 That is the exact opposite of what you tend to see with Shushu Carrington.
13:01 I mean, look, Shushu's in a much different position.
13:03 He's fought here multiple times already.
13:06 He's accustomed to the ritual.
13:09 For a guy like Arnold, he's been waiting a long time.
13:15 He's the first fighter of the night.
13:18 He's all juiced up.
13:19 And I think, frankly, it's just a little bit of difficulty in feeling the distance.
13:25 But as far as Shushu's concerned, I think he can't miss.
13:29 And I do believe, look, Tess said something at the open of the show
13:34 about this being the mecca of boxing.
13:37 And I think that was historically the case.
13:39 I don't think it's been that way for a decade at least.
13:43 I mean, when was the last New Yorker that really paralyzed the boxing world?
13:48 Paralyzed?
13:49 Well, no, I mean, that would be Tyson, but the last great New Yorker.
13:53 Danny Jacobs was the last real champion, but did Danny Jacobs light up the world?
13:59 I'm not--you know, nothing against Danny Jacobs at all,
14:03 but it is a better, healthier game when there's a New York guy in the mix
14:09 who's talking stuff and people are talking stuff about him.
14:12 They're historically brash fighters.
14:15 It's a better game with a Breeland, with a Bo, with a Tyson.
14:22 Even a Zab Judah coming out.
14:23 Zab, absolutely, man.
14:25 Backed it up inside the ring.
14:28 I mean, I think in some respects Tiafumo fixed that build, but he never really lived--
14:35 I think he left Brooklyn when he was five.
14:39 Certainly a New Yorker in terms of temperament.
14:41 Absolutely.
14:42 He carries that with him everywhere he goes,
14:44 but he's more of a South Florida guy now living out in Las Vegas,
14:49 but nonetheless New York knew that big stuff.
14:51 I mean, she was living in Vegas too.
14:53 Nice right hand by Arnold Gonzalez.
15:01 That's a quick combination right up the pipe from Arnold Gonzalez.
15:05 Actually, it was a three-piece old score.
15:08 That's a Pollo Campero today.
15:10 I got myself a three-piece.
15:12 Nice body work with a right from Arnold Gonzalez.
15:15 He's getting into a rhythm now, making Stanford miss and then making him pay.
15:19 I mean, this is the Arnold Gonzalez I see in the gym.
15:22 It took him three rounds to warm up, but here he is.
15:25 Brownsville, New York, the hometown of Bruce "Shushu" Carrington,
15:28 has produced some of the greatest champions in the sport,
15:31 and Shushu is hoping to become the eighth.
15:36 Boxing holds a special place in Brownsville.
15:43 Brownsville is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, a neighborhood.
15:47 For us to produce seven world champions,
15:50 Albumi Davis is our first world champion,
15:52 Daniel Jacobs, Shannon Briggs, Zab Judah,
15:55 Edwin Mustafa Mohammed, Riddick Bowe, Mike Tyson.
15:59 Like, it's something in the water at this point.
16:05 That's when Mike Tyson was going crazy in the crowd when he knocked you out.
16:08 I was there. I was right there.
16:11 I've always was like a boxer, puncher, aggressive boxer, puncher, trying to get you out of it.
16:15 That's just me coming up from Brownsville, to be honest.
16:17 Yeah, me coming up from Brownsville, I always had that type of aggression.
16:22 I just want to be able to be, you know, number eight on the list of Brownsville champions.
16:30 The biggest difference I see--well, maybe Shannon Briggs had that charisma, that smile,
16:34 but Mike Tyson and Zab Judah were all business in that ring.
16:38 I think the difference is Shushu carries all that aggressiveness,
16:43 but he does it with a million-dollar smile.
16:45 Shushu has a baby face and a great sense of purpose.
16:48 By the way, you know, one guy should have been in that mix is Riddick Bowe.
16:53 I mean, I remember going to Brownsville, where he's from,
16:58 the Noble Jew houses, when he brought the belt back, and it was magic.
17:03 It was really something after he'd beaten Holyfield the first time.
17:09 I mean, that was a great era for the heavyweights.
17:12 And who else is from Brownsville?
17:15 World B. Free. My dating my son?
17:17 Okay, okay.
17:18 Willie Randolph.
17:19 Oh, number two.
17:20 They were both played for the Brownsville Jets.
17:22 Look at you.
17:24 I'm a Brownsville encyclopedia.
17:26 I would expect nothing else.
17:30 It was written in black and white, too, huh?
17:32 I think that was called it.
17:33 It's like basic cable, baby.
17:38 Nice short left hook from Arnold Gonzalez.
17:42 Now, you see his feet move there?
17:44 Now he's got his distance.
17:52 And it's interesting that you mention that, Mark,
17:54 because the body work has been effective for him,
17:56 but now he's beating Charles Stanford from the outside as well,
17:59 so he's got Stanford perplexed.
18:09 Quick combination from Arnold Gonzalez.
18:13 There's no sense in sure-coding it here.
18:16 I see a lot of nice defensive work, a lot of slick stuff from him.
18:18 I like the body work.
18:21 We're told he has a great jab.
18:25 But he can improve his position immeasurably by going for the knockout here and scoring one.
18:30 He's got three knockouts in his last six fights, three knockouts over his first seven fights.
18:35 What Julian said is the lack of knockouts there has to do with he can win a fight easily with his jab,
18:43 and he's got to evolve beyond that.
18:45 That's what he's looking to see tonight.
18:47 I've been impressed by the right hand, though, of Arnold Gonzalez tonight,
18:50 because he's thrown it over the top, around the side as a hook,
18:53 and then the way he's worked it to the body as well.
18:56 So it's been more than the jab tonight, so Julian's got to be happy about that.
19:00 And the uppercut.
19:01 Yes.
19:03 Might have been the best shot of the fight.
19:04 That was a nice right uppercut, and Stanford tried to land a nice right uppercut there.
19:20 There it is. Now you see Stanford landing some shots here to close out.
19:24 I could imagine Stanford in his previous life, he's not the guy you want to see at the end of the bar, upset.
19:31 [bell rings]
19:33 Good thing that his three children came along and changed his life.
19:37 His son's Caden, Dom, and his daughter Carter.
19:39 Let's listen in to his corner.
19:41 [indiscernible]
20:08 The combination Gonzalez has been so efficient with.
20:14 That right hand you like.
20:17 There you go.
20:22 I'll tell you what, though.
20:23 I was taken between the rounds by what trainer Scott Wegman told Stanford.
20:29 This is what you really have to tell a guy in this position.
20:31 You're nobody's stepping stone.
20:33 That's why they brought you here, but that's not what you're going to do.
20:36 You're not here to be an opponent.
20:38 The other thing that I thought was excellent was him saying, "You're punching like he's your height. He's not."
20:43 Throw at your chest level, and you're going to hit him.
20:46 You know what that reminds me of?
20:48 What happened with the Ryan Garcia and Tank Davis fight.
20:51 I remember him doing all the flashing footwork and pad work so high up.
20:57 I even told his team, I asked his team, "Is he really doing that for flash, or is that how he's going to punch during the fight?"
21:03 It turned out all his punches were going over the head of Gervonta Davis, leaving his body open.
21:08 Now we see Stanford a lot more active here in the final round.
21:12 I thought Ryan Garcia's problem in that fight was that they might have been a little bit high,
21:18 but when you throw the same sequence three, then four times in a row,
21:23 a fighter as smart and as nimble as Gervonta Davis is going to figure it out, duck under, and do what he did.
21:30 Ask Leo Santa Cruz how that worked out for him, throwing that straight right hand three times in a row.
21:35 You see Stanford here giving it his all in the final round, and a quick combination from Gonzalez once again.
21:42 He got the memo. Now he's trying to MMA.
21:46 Well, that's what he is. He was an MMA fighter before he was a boxer, 8 and 11.
21:50 He's still an MMA trainer. Look, he's been matched up against Evan Holyfield, who was undefeated.
21:55 Richardson Hitchens, another top prospect when he was 3 and 0. Montana Love, when he was 3 and 0.
22:00 It's not been an easy path against all those unbeaten fighters.
22:05 And tonight he's in against another one in Arnold Gonzalez.
22:09 He's trying to get that elbow in.
22:12 Nice body shot by Gonzalez.
22:16 Overhand right.
22:19 You see that angle work from Gonzalez.
22:23 Despite the height and reach advantage from Stanford, which he really neutralized after that first round.
22:29 I'm impressed with how slick Arnold is defensively.
22:34 I can't help but wonder if he's fighting a little bit higher.
22:39 If he shouldn't be around 140 instead of 47.
22:43 Yeah, maybe. Peace out.
22:46 At that size he's going to continue to give away a lot of weight, a lot of reach.
22:53 I'm sorry, a lot of height, a lot of reach.
22:56 Yeah, I mean that's not a bad idea, but making that weight is a bit...
23:01 He's got a thick body, so maybe if you incentivize him with a big fight he'll make 140.
23:08 Look, he was 152 as an amateur. The gloves fighting right here and he won, you know.
23:14 I still can't help but wonder.
23:17 152 versus 150, he's going to be fighting some really big guys.
23:21 They're going to be bigger than Stanford.
23:23 Absolutely, going to be facing some six-footers there.
23:26 And who hit harder and take a better shot.
23:31 I'll tell you what, Stanford takes a pretty good shot.
23:34 He's got hit clean several times tonight.
23:37 Arnold's engineered a lot of nice counters on Stanford's way in.
23:43 Fight!
23:45 Final bell here, six rounds in the books.
23:49 Arnold Gonzalez looks like he's on his way to staying unbeaten.
23:53 14 victories and Charles Stanford, another undefeated opponent inside the ring.
23:59 Let's take a look at how effective Gonzalez was on the inside to start the fight.
24:05 There he goes with the body work, trying to tie him up.
24:10 Left, right, left.
24:15 The body work is a difference early.
24:18 Fewer straight punches than we were led to believe, at least I was.
24:25 But then, right there, he started getting his combinations off.
24:30 We saw a nice three-piece, I believe it was in the third or fourth round.
24:34 That was pretty much, the fight didn't change from there on.
24:39 The fact that Arnold Gonzalez is out there at Brickhouse means he was sparring with Regis Purgray for that Devin Haney fight.
24:46 He also got work in with George Camboses for that Teofimo Lopez fight that he pulled off the upset.
24:53 You're obviously going to get excellent work in Southern California when it comes to sparring.
24:58 The irony is that we're here in New York, we're celebrating New York boxing,
25:03 but California has really become what New York once was.
25:07 That's where all the fighters go now.
25:09 It's much more difficult to get the same kind of work here as you can get in Southern California, certainly Las Vegas.
25:16 >> You see Arnold Gonzalez...
25:19 >> That's why a kid like that shows up at the wild card.
25:21 >> Absolutely, yeah. He goes up there trying to get good work, and that's exactly what he got.
25:25 He got to meet his idol in Matty Pacquiao, and then grow from there to elite sparring sessions down the line for Arnold Gonzalez.
25:35 He makes his hometown fans happy here.
25:38 All of Harlem came out to see Arnold Gonzalez to open up our fight card here on Top Rank Boxing on ESPN+.
25:47 And Mark Shanuk is stepping into the ring, and he has the decision.
25:51 [bell rings]
25:52 >> Ladies and gentlemen, after six rounds inside the theater here at Madison Square Garden,
25:57 we go to the judges' scorecards for the official decision.
26:02 >> Steve Weisfeld has the bout, 58-56.
26:05 Max DeLuca and Frank Lombardi both have it, 59-55.
26:10 For your winner by unanimous decision...
26:13 Arnold A.G. Gonzalez!
26:18 [bell rings]
26:19 >> Arnold Gonzalez indeed improves to 14-0, winning by unanimous decision inside the theater.
